  • Glad you got that! Its a major point in talking about social programs. If you can see this in college programs you can see the benefit when applied to social programs as well. Not sure if I can convince you of that too. But it's always nice to get a response of "that makes sense" in this context.

  • I would say this is the WORST (not really) attempt to try to connect the current American state to Nazi Germany. There are much much better comparisons when considering class conflict. I guess I'm the "idiot" and this is likely good propaganda for the "normies" in our current state. So maybe I'm out of touch in that regard. But the connections are far more important than the price of eggs.

I don't really wanna give more here because I'm tired but for anyone that cares: Just read and you'll get some perspective

I guess I like the simple levels of comparison but I think anyone that actually would be convinced by it needs more perspective.

  • Downsides can be inconsistent behavior. As with any alias it's not meant to be anything but a replacement in your shell. Scripts/SSH etc.

Also, you gotta remember to empty your trash. :)

  • alias trash-put from trash-cli in both sudo and user.

    myrm() {
      trash-put "$@"
    }
    alias rm="myrm"

This has saved my ass so many times. Especially when typing "rm * .png" instead of "rm *.png"

Can restore the files using the cli or from system recycling bin.

The alias to rm is probably not best. So getting use to using another name is probably best. But I'm never had a problem with it.

  • Nah. Fuck forced updates. Only time I'm forced to use windows is for work.

I have to play the "low battery" game when it starts notifying me during work. Unplugging and repowering the laptop right below 10% so it won't restart and disconnect my VM and SSH sessions I'm using for work.

I don't care what anyone says. Updates that can't have a forever "give me 1 more hour" indefinitely are just going to destroy work.

Suddenly restarting in the middle of someone working is just awful design. I don't care how many "warnings" there are.

I'm connected to a remote session and doing work. If you restart my computer I could lose my work. The OS is not some self contained thing you can always save the state in.

  • Not really the same. Charging for this would discourage people from using it. They have to make a choice on feeling safe vs. spending money.

This gives everyone the option and subsidizes it to the entire community.

This is exactly why socializing things like this is beneficial.

Every service has a cost. That cost is the value of the labor being provided. But we decide as a society that providing services like this benefits everyone living in society. Regardless of if they use it directly or not.

When people say "free" in this context that's what they mean. They mean the decision based on personal finance is removed.

We don't want people choosing personal finance over safety or health. Removing that dependency benefits everyone.

  • I work for Microsoft. When I had a kid they sent a "care package" with some items. But literally every item had "Microsoft" or "Met Life" (our employee life insurance I think) all over everything.

I ripped the "met life" shirt off of the snoopy plush and trashed everything else.

It's not just limited to backpacks. They try to turn everything, even a kids blanket, into a fucking ad. It's so gross.

You can't send some cheap items to your employee without branding it with an ad.

I don't work for MetLife. Why the fuck would that even be on there? I guess they want to keep reminding me to get life insurance because I'm a kid. Like, holy fuck, I hate this shit.

Fuck Microsoft. Fuck their support of genocide. I didn't even choose to work here. They bought my startup company for pennies on the dollar during Covid.

  • Again, this is by design. The point is GitHub is for developers. If a non developer reaches the page they SHOULD feel a little intimidated. They SHOULD be either forced to read some notes or come back and ask for help (like the commenter did).

This is for their own benefit. Its meant to give people pause about what they are installing or downloading. Since GitHub can host anything. It SHOULD feel different than downloading Discord or some other app.

It is not meant to be a friendly UI that says "Install here!". It is meant to make the user have some caution over what they are doing.

And, again, it's designed for developers. Not end users.

  • I think it's actually a positive sign. Liberalism has always been very good at keeping the masses passive with "toys". Previously, this would have been some story about a kids toy or going to Disney world. But they've shifted to this and I think it's a sign.

For the last 40-50 years the US has had enough power and control over their population that they could afford not to be so blunt in their propaganda. They had the luxury of allowing this illusion of freedom and free thought.

I think the increase in this type of thing is just a sign that the means of controlling the population are failing. Or at least that the capitalist class is worried it is. They are having to resort to more direct methods of indoctrination and on a greater scale.

The problem is, it's transparent, at least to adults. You can't brain wash a kid into believing a religion when their parents do not. It's extremely difficult. This is very much the same dogmatic education as religion might teach.

This will backfire and have the opposite effect. This isn't the 1900s. Kids won't only be exposed to information they learn in school. And kids are ALWAYS looking for a way to defy authority.

The fifth grader will definitely fall for this. But their education will not end there. If you do this in high school a lot of kids are gonna catch onto this dogma the harder it is pushed onto them.

  • I think it's a good design in some ways and worse in others.

For this case it's annoying because it's just a .zip that has the binaries ready to go i assume.

But you really want the focus to be on the README and good install instructions. Especially when the releases are just uncomiled source code (which is common).

So I think GitHub leaves this focus on the README and let's the dev decide what is the focus of the people visiting.

  • Nah. Probably just some vague law about it being illegal to enter that state as a "terrorist".

Which is just a word for a brown person or a white person with a brown enough sounding name like "Lopez" or "Muhammad"

  • The article is not clear. Was he held by ICE or held at the request of ICE (like it says).

So it sounds like ICE was using state resources and officers to hold him but he was freed because of a state judges rule?

This doesn't sound so much like ICE/feds giving up. But them testing which state resources and judges will play ball and who needs to be "removed".

  • This country doesn't want to pay teachers so it's using technology to fill the gap. It's not being used to enhance the education. It's being used to keep costs low. It's like using a self checkout camera. Sure, some people will still steal stuff. You're not actually trying to prevent all of that. You're just trying to lower that amount of theft so it's less than hiring a cashier. The teachers suffer and the students suffer for it.

But this country is also not interested in having well educated people capable of critical thinking. I believe I'm paraphrasing Carlin now. But it just wants obedient workers.

  • I'll give the benefit of the doubt here. But if you're at all "leftist" and attribute America to being run by "Israel" you should really understand who's framing you are repeating here.

America is not "run by Israeli interest". It is run by the interest of capital and for the interest of capital. American capitalist are absolutely the ones running, encouraging, and most of all enabling the actions of Israel. And they hide behind "creating a safe place for Jews" like we don't all understand it's just another madagascar plan.

Please don't fall for this "Israel runs America". Especially trying to attribute all Jewish Americans to supporting Israel.

Israel IS American interest. And that interest is for a white supremacists capitalist class. Using Antisemitism as a shield will only last for so long. These Nazi's are going to drop that real quick and start "sending Jews to Israel where they can be safe" before we know it.

And if it wasn't clear. The people that say America is "run by Israel" are Nazis. And the Nazi leaders running this country will quickly start singing that same song when they are done using antisemitism/Israel as reason to deport Muslims and anyone supporting Palestine.

Please don't let fascist fool you. The Israeli fascist do not care about Jews and neither do the American fascist. They both only care about creating their own fascist ethnostates.
