  • Yeah, I agree with this suspiciously named man. Whether it happens sooner or later, Reddit’s death is on the horizon, as it will keep making the wrong choices and so steadily lose those communities and content that built it in the first place.

    Did Digg die in days?

  • Since December 1982, the O-rings had been designated a “Criticality 1″ item by NASA, denoting a component without a backup, whose failure would result in the loss of the shuttle and its crew.

Richard Feynman[:] “… [the shuttle] flies [with O-ring erosion] and nothing happens. Then it is suggested, therefore, that the risk is no longer so high for the next flights. We can lower our standards a little bit because we got away with it last time. You got away with it, but it shouldn’t be done over and over again like that.”

Taken from an excellent writeup of the fatal 1986 Challenger flight.

  • Remember kids: the higher the productivity graph climbs, the more proof there is that no one wants to work!

  • If you vote third party in a presidential election then it is a wasted vote.

If third parties want to win presidential elections then they need to start by consistently and widely winning governorships, becoming state senators, reps, etc. They can’t win, and they won’t shift public debate, by running for president.

  • I find that the people who purport to an academic view of fights over human rights tend to be those whose rights are not (now) in question, and that they find more entertainment in the emotions at play than in empathizing with those who feel said emotions makes me question their willingness or ability to change their own stance.

Neutrality is a starting point. Where you choose to go from there is an expression of your character.

  • That’s gorgeous!

It’s like if the leaves turned all at once in autumn and the grass decided it wanted to join in.

  • One of mine asked what my favorite author was.

Since then, my tastes have changed.

    I haven’t gotten into that account since…

  • Do you think kittens are cute?

Do you want to fuck them?

    No?

Then there’s nothing wrong with calling cute things cute because “cute” and “sexual” are not the same word or concept.

  • Well yeah, that’s just kind of the nature of conversations. That’s why a witty retort made an hour later just doesn’t have the oomph as a less funny one made in the moment.

In order to facilitate conversation, comments need to function like conversations, and those things just aren’t set in stone.

What it really comes down to is, when you comment, are you here to talk to people, to listen to them, or to get votes?

  • If it bothers you, why not sort by New and ignore votes?

You’re not going to avoid herd mentality when socializing within a social species. That’s just how we work. So if it bothers you, curate your experience to how you want it.

  • What do you mean by long term happiness?

Is it a sense that everything is on the up and up, or just even keeled? Is it a belief that you are, at this moment, where you should be? Is it a retinue of loving friends and family who truly see you for the person you are and still love you? Is it a lack of worry about global or personal conditions, or the faith that those will be worked out?

A constant, unflagging upward trajectory of achievement, sociability, and unique and meaningful experience gathering is simply impossible, and drugs will not grant you more than shallow flashes in the pan in between long stretches of pain and drudgery.

You can’t face the enormity of the world and your life head on, your consciousness and awareness aren’t nearly big enough for that, so focus on the here and now and the hazy near future. Question what makes you feel happy, what experiences or people grant you value, and focus on those.

  • “In the end, we decided the benefits were worth it.” “The benefits?” “Oh you know: healthcare, affordable wages, plenty of vacation…”

  • Because they, like Trump, don’t use the meanings of words to communicate what they’re saying. They use the force behind the words, the feeling.

“Would be a real shame if this guy died” might be literally expressing concern, but all the underlings know what that means.

“You’re too honest” means “you’re TOO honest [for your own good]”.

  • 138k active users to 554k total users is about 25%, which I would imagine is significantly higher than most social media.

Is someone marked an active user if they ever voted or posted a comment/post, or do they drop off if they haven’t done so in 14 days?

  • I was able to get Mlem without TestFlight, and that was at least a week and a half ago.

  • It’s the “not the first time it’s happened/coochie coochie” bit that has me thinking that he’s expressing a freer association than most.

It’s still vulgar, but there’s an element of the words not really linking up to the topic while still maintaining the flow of a sentence or conversation.
