With Reddit, though, some subreddits required a minimum amount of karma to post, whereas if you have access to an instance you can post freely.
So it’s more a user rating of “this was good/how have you survived until this point” than a gatekeeping device: you, as a poster, can freely ignore your points and the points of others if you don’t care.
I imagine it like being in a building (fediverse) with many rooms (instances) that will open up doors or pathways (federating) to each other to allow for free movement between the rooms. Your account might be based in one room, like you have your own cubbyhole, but if the door is open you can go somewhere else.
…which means you’ll have to be absurdly good at descriptions and being self-aware as to what you really want, and even then you’ll probably be both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised.
How often does an experience, a food, a film, sound crazy good on paper but just ends up kinda meh, while something you stumbled upon is suddenly the best thing ever? We crave unique experiences; asking specifically for one doesn’t scratch that itch as well as just having one.
This would be great. I get the value of having instances be separated but starting over is a real pain.
Maybe something about account creation: create the account only for this instance or create it for all/select number of instances? Even something like 5-10 instances “holding onto” your account could prevent things from disappearing without warning unless something really bad went down.
Spitballing here, since my understanding of how this works is ehhhhhhhhh…
I moved to Duck Duck Go a while ago, partly for privacy reasons and partly because Google was becoming very top heavy with ads. It’s still a better search engine so I’ll use it occasionally, but only if DDG is really not getting what I need.
Do you know how good Ecosia is in terms of privacy? If it’s as good as DDG, then sure I’d use it.
Do you want things to improve or do you want to stay right?
You can’t have both.
