  • We are rapidly approaching the point where it is an open question as to whether the Supreme Court can make its rulings stick in jurisdictions that don’t fall along the current majority’s ideological bent

Recently the most significant refusals to follow court rulings are in jurisdictions that do agree with the court majority's ideological bent. Alabama's voting maps fight and Texas's current border fight being the two biggest ones. At least for now democrats still generally believe in the American system and respect the rule of law.

  • The 5 day work week is largely dead for the working class. Employers either keep nearly all of their employees part time to avoid having to give them health insurance or have weekly mandatory overtime to keep the headcount down because it's cheaper to pay the overtime for 60-80 hr weeks than to give another employee benefits. We're going backwards in most places that we had made gains.

  • From the US, there was some experimental stuff going on when I was in school and I was out in the boonies so k-8 schools with self contained classrooms was the norm and they were called elementary schools. I did kindergarten and first grade normally then there was a change and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades were combined into the same classroom and called primary school. I was in primary school for what would have been 2nd and 3rd grade. 4th through 8th were the normal self contained classrooms in elementary school.

I was in the last class for my elementary school then they combined it with another school that was k-6 and opened a jr highschool that was 7th and 8th. So I didn't go to a jr high or a secondary school but if I were a year younger I would have gone to a jr high. I did go to a primary, an elementary, and a high school.

  • For the 72hour hold they either have to make a threat or be acting irrationality while interacting with the officer. For a court ordered hold initiated by a family member or social worker becoming reclusive and paranoid can be enough if it rises to the level of the person neglecting their own basic needs.

  • It's unlikely that there is a single cause. Human behavior is complex and has many influencing factors. I think we need to be careful about armchair diagnostics but I also did that evaluation (early 20s + extreme behavior shift + paranoia and violence = schizophrenia). The mental illness messes with how you think and react, the parasocial identity focuses and reinforces the thinking and paranoia.

Yes, we absolutely need better mental health education and resources.

  • If there is evidence that a person is a danger to themselves or others the a police officer can forcibly take that person to a hospital for evaluation and the hospital can hold the person involuntarily for 72 hours. To hold the person for longer than 72 hours the hold must be reviewed and approved by a judge. As you might expect the system is subject to significant abuse.
