  • Except the Ukrainians in Odessa who speak Russian and feel they are Ukranian, fuck those people.

Odessa is not Donbas, it's a unique impressive area with its own history.

Edit: By I can see both sides, I mean I get the Ukranian fury at Russia etc. But I also understand that the people of Odessa have their own version of what being Ukranian is and means.

  • I take it folks saw the phrase cancel culture and downvoted?

It's actually a fascinating article. Odessa has been at the intersection of Ukraine and Russia for ages. Lots of Russian speakers who resisted Russia etc. But as the invasion goes on, people are being attacked for speaking Russian, statues of Odessa's most famous people torn down etc. And you can kind of see where both sides are coming from.

It's an issue I imagine almost none of us knew or thought about, if not for the phrase "cancel culture" why on Earth are we downvoting it?

  • Look, are there downsides? Absolutely.

But, just thinking about the few days for Christmas:

Buddy and I were out and making plans to swim. Using our phones we found out what time the pool was open, then found out whether there was bbq nearby. We then added this to our calendars. All at thr same time without having to go home, look it up, coordinate then write it down.

The next day, I got groceries. I used my grocery app which also contains a couple hundred recipes I've collected. The grocery store had a great deal on something I hadn't expected so I pivoted, used my phone to look through my recipes, found an appropriate one and adjusted.

Later, running errands on my bike and finished a bit early. On a whim, I checked to see if a movie I wanted to catch was anywhere near. It was but not in an area I bike often. Booked my tickets on the phone, navigated there and streamed music to listen to as I rode.

Heck, when I visited for Christmas, a friend sent a message warning the ferries to come home were getting cancelled. I checked while we were out at dinner, found the last ferry was still running and had space so was able to make it home instead of getting stranded.

Outside of this week, I've dated a bunch of girls whom I'd have never met were it not for "the apps." Say what you will, it expands the network of dateable folks well outside your own social networks.

In summary: streaming music everywhere, all sorts of apps making things easier (in this case, recipes etc) navigation, making plans on the fly, dating all sorts of folks, booking things without having to find a computer and way more.

  • I think the holidays are like most things, for better or worse they mostly enhance whatever mindset you're in. (With exceptions etc)

Unhappy about life? Holidays probably not awesome in general.

    Happy about it? Absolute blast.

That being said, if you want to work towards making things better, the holidays do offer a lot of opportunities!

  • Oh the fulfilling bit, hard to argue one way or the other. Might be a grass is greener sort of scenario. Like, as a dev who works from home, spending a few days doing hard, long hours of manual labour on my buddy's cabin was fun but holy damn, not sure I could dig that every day for years. Especially without physiotherapy and modern medicine (I play soccer a few times a week and without physio, I'd be a broken husk of a man.)

I imagine the protagonist might have looked at us sitting in the warm with all the free time, multimedia beyond his comprehension, literally every book written at our fingertips and he would've been fair to wonder something like "in such luxury, how could anyone not find their own meaning? With the freedom to learn almost anything imaginable,, with food and a warm bed being all but guaranteed, what person could blame the world instead of themselves for not finding purpose or passion?"

  • I think they mean in a boilerplate joke sense.

Making a meme is like making a joke where the punchline is basically worked out for you, you just need to figure out ingredients.

I'm not great with meme templates but take the Drake ugh/yay one. You just need something we dislike and a related thing we like. The punch line is Drake's expression etc.

There's more to a good meme but...

  • You might ask if they have the meds in a liquid solution. My cat's on some anti seizure meds, was very tricky about eating around even crushed up pill etc. The liquid solution cost marginally more (less than 5% difference I think) and is significantly easier to give and more importantly, be sure she ingested exactly as much as she should.

  • Those Native Americans were working within a society.

To be unencumbered by society also means to work without its aids. Even with advances in tech, you should read about how much crazy work was involved in setting up your own homestead or kind of anything. (I strongly recommend Crusoe of Lonesome Lake.)
