According to capitalism, capitalism is the only regulation capitalism needs. Capitalism regulated by something other than capitalism is anti-capitalism.

Respectfully, I don't think this is true.

Even Adam Smith warned about the dangers of monopolies and the fact that businesses would try to crate them, collide againat consumers etc. That's kind of the foundation of anti trust legislation.

Now, modern republicans have endorsed the view of capitalism that you've noted but to say that's the how Capitalism works is like saying Soviet Russia is how communism works.

Yeah, I like all these ideas. I wondered about some sort of pooled "ban/ignore" options at the individual level. So, rather than ignoring by an instance, if I trust that Janet has good tastes and filters out children and trump, maybe I can just have an ongoing list that draws from her blocks and vice versa if she feels similar.

I always thought they were more traditional socialist democracy?

But I doubt many of their voters believe a vote for them will bring about the end of capitalism...

The point is that you want somewhere with a large userbase so as to ensure there's content to enjoy.

I'd strongly disagree. I think reddit is generally on the left side of most cultural and political institutions.

To each their own though.

I dobtwrhinj it's any serious political talk (otherwise most countries are having unserious talks about their Left and Right wings) but maybe in serious political theory talks?

Like, Germany's Left parties mostly don't want to dismantle capitalism but I wouldn't dismiss all conversation about them and putting people on that Left Right spectrum to be unserious.

I guess... Well, I have trouble seeing the fediverse expand that far then. Which is fine but there have been a lot of pleas to make this a viable alternative to corpo social media.

I'd like to agree with you but I am so cynical I think that's just how dumb people can be.

But those are exactly the folks that make this place less enjoyable for me and at least a couple other folks I know.

Admittedly, I had communism on the mind but it's two letters apart... And in the context of taking on corpo social media... I dunno. Again, I was primed but that was my immediate assumption. (Though, you know what they say about assumptions.)

Lemmy is much farther left than any of our national discourse.

I get that American parties are farther Right than most but the discourse here is much farther Left than almost all political discourse. Edit: I'm happy to be corrected, show me a serious party in a position of power in a Western democracy committed to ending capitalism!

Yeah, this is exactly the childish annoyances and unpleasantness I'm talking about.

Not everyone wants to spend social media arguing with people. We have things to do. It's not a particularly pleasant environment sometimes abd believe it or not, that bothers people.

Yeah, I think .world is the biggest and so I'd love that to be the "base" but even responses here go to "if you ain't against capitalism, I don't want you here."

Actually that was my instinctual thought as well. Though, I might be primed as a result of some of the responses.

Yet the memes, jokes and everything that gets through to the non politics junkies was about Elon's salute.

Almost like it was a perfect distraction for people to get enraged by while ignoring the serious issues.

A few things.

I'm not going to correct their beliefs or point out cruelty/hypocrisy, may feel good but that's not the point of the question. Especially now, it's important to understand where folks are coming from.

Broadly speaking, people vote on emotion and how they view their circumstances. Most Americans, in real purchasing terms are less well off than they were during trump's first presidency. They expect and hope a "businessman" in the office will mean more wealth for them as Americans, financially, did pretty well under trump 1.0

The big policy one is immigration. Wrongly or rightly, they associate stagnant wages with immigration and are also concerned about crime.

An end to federal action on climate change. Among conservatives, these actions are often seen as wage/job killers or at the very least increasing the costs of products or taking away things people like (say, giant gas guzzling trucks/SUVs. Fox occasionally also conspiracy stuff about forced veganism etc.)

Removal of DEI stuff. Any white conservative parent whose kid doesn't get the job/school spot etc wonders if it was because minority applicants were given more consideration. (Even among Liberals you'll hear strains of this. As an animator buddy put it to me while applying for grants "sure, I'll apply but I'm a straight white male, what studio gives a fuck about my story?")

For the cultural conservatives (think heavily religious) they expect/hope sex education will be limited, avoid talk of gender identities etc. Similar changes, somehow stopping trans female athletes playing in university women's leagues or some such.

They also seem to expect the deficit to be reduced because "businessmen will run the government like a business, get rid of bloat and get the country not paying more on the interest on its debts than on the military."

Finally, apparently world leaders respect trump so no more wars etc.

Again, I'm not correcting or advocating for these beliefs. These are just what I understand Conservatives to want/expect.

The delightful irony is that late last year, Chinese students started doing a big bicycle ride from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng for dumplings. Too many young folks together gets Chinese officials nervous so the authorities shut it down.

So, master of your own time if the party approves of how you spend said time.
