  • As someone said, there are ways to get it working in OBS.

Does it expose the full feature set using VA-API? I have no clue. I was never able to actually hit the bitrate I wanted.

Please note that cards until the RX 6000 generation do not support B-frames.

  • Fun fact: with the proper plugins, you can capture both the video and the output of a particular window / process in OBS, giving you a stream of exactly that and nothing else (which you can then mix with other sources). Very handy for streaming if you don't want to include voice chat (for privacy reasons) or background music (DMCA takedown on VODs).

However, for capturing Vulkan games, I recommend the vkcapture plugin. It acts as a Vulkan layer and is very performant, plus I get the impression it works better with Freesync.

  • All of the following is speculation on my side and just stated as fact for easier reading / writing.

Because through the years I never had problems with plain Alsa on the same hardware

Because it did not allow for the functionality that exposed those bugs (as in PulseAudio provided features that should work according to documentation, but didn't)

I don’t have problems with pipewire either on that hardware.

Because these bugs got fixed after PulseAudio exposed them.

  • Let's be fair here. PipeWire is leaps and bounds ahead of pulse and I was super happy when I could drop pulse. But pulse predates PipeWire by a decade and introduced concepts that were previously rather complex in Linux. It's no coincidence its interface was adopted so quickly by audio tools and that it's the recommended interface for PipeWire today (until devs are comfortable with recommending their own). Lennart saw the need and provided a solution which, in retrospective, could be much improved - but until PipeWire, nobody put in the work.

I too had my fair share of issues with PA. But it also solved some fundamental ones for me. I don't miss meddling with .asoundrc or whatever it was to get dmix working. Pulse should not be measured against PipeWire, but rather ALSA, OSS and the stuff that the DEs brought with them (aRts...). It wasn't always pretty. Early Pulse, however, wasn't either.

Also, audio was originally not even in scope for PipeWire - it was touted as "PulseAudio for video". So pulse didn't exactly have a bad reputation even among PipeWire devs.

  • It's the same for Linux though, if you mount any drive, your user or rather UID/GID needs appropriate permissions to perform any action. Can even happen that you mount a disk with your old home directory somewhere and can't access it because your UID changed between installations (though it's 1000 for most people).

  • On the other hand, I don't really have a fundamental problem with it. I don't use Chrome and am not going to use this. My approach to websites using it will be the same as programs not running on my operating system: I'll simply ignore them, same as I already ignore websites today that don't serve me because of GDPR.

I also do see a problem in adblocking. It's just that it's the lesser of two evils for me and as such, I opt into it. Google, being on the other side of the situation, for good reasons comes to a different assessment.

All in all I don't think this is a good development, but OTOH, if someone doesn't want me to visit their site, that's ok.

  • Or remember when they promised members of their military alliance help in case they get attacked? And when Azerbaijan attacked Armenia and Moscow did fuck all? And then these two countries had their diplomatic talks in the US?

I understand Africa trying to emancipate from the west (though sometimes this someone's seems to be personal interest of the leaders of these countries) but if you believe anything Putin says you're in for a bad time.

In fact I'm pretty sure Russia doesn't have African colonies because the country was too unstable during the time the European countries got some.

  • Resurrected was pretty good but I really dislike the always online BS.

It's not always online, the single player can be played offline, just start the binary directly I think.

What it lacks compared to the original is a way for private realms (not that these were ever officially supported in the original game). Still got the game on offer for $20 and think it's been a great remaster, I had a blast. If you still l want to play D2 in 2023 is a different question though. It was great in its day but a lot of the concepts show their age.

  • Musk says he’s unbothered by the criticism. “Frankly, I love the negative feedback on this platform,” he tweeted on July 22. “Vastly preferable to some sniffy censorship bureau!”

Holy shit he's unhinged. Not that that's any news...

How did you like the criticism on your standup "comedy" performance, Elon? Or were that sock puppets by the deep state to hinder your free speech?

  • I'd say this is a very unusual setup. Normally, you give /home its own partition and then create user directories in there.

OTOH, nothing about this should break anything. What you can do if you're savvy enough:

    1. Create a directory with your username in your home directory
    2. Move everything in your home directory into that new one (preferably do this as root so that you're not using any files in there I guess). Careful as moving dotfiles can be tricky. find should be the correct tool here, but I can't tell you the proper command right now
    3. Move /home/void next to (not into) that new directory. You should now have void and moi as the only two entries in /home/moi
    4. In /etc/fstab, change the mount point for your home partition from /home/moi to /home.
    5. Reboot (or remount manually)

Please, before doing this, let someone else look over this and preferably expand. I just wrote this down on my phone while on a train ride without access to a Linux machine to verify anything. Also some of these steps are not exactly beginner level.

  • It's truly deranged. But perfectly understandable if you take out any moral aspect out of Christianity and then focus on the literal aspect of the old testament. It then becomes a vehicle to justify your own behavior - no matter how reprehensible - because you display your faith the most. Or rather mention it the most and take that as a display of faith.
