  • A hypothetical should be absolutely as barebones minimal as it can possibly be. The point of a hypothetical is to isolate the actual point you're trying to ask about. In the one you wrote, i think what you're trying to ask is "How should we value people's ambition, success, and ethics?" So the setup should be something like this:

"You're tasked with giving a million dollars to one of the following random people. All you know about them is these descriptions you were handed."

And then after the descriptions of the people just say "Who would you choose to give the money to?

  • This hypothetical makes no sense to me. Why couldn't they all be given something of value? If the dying person only has one valuable item then sell it and share the money equally. If the dying person doesn't want the item to be sold then set up a sharing agreement where they each get to have it for equal amounts of time. Etc. But even in your version of it you say the dying person has several things of value to give away. I don't understand the premise or point of this hypothetical.

  • It definitely isn't theft. It's the cost of living in the society that you want to live in. No one is forcing you to live in an area that has a tax price attached. You're free to move to a place with no taxes, but you don't want to live in those places. Being forced to pay with no other options is theft, choosing to live in an area with taxes providing services you want is not.

  • But but but conservatives said that if you raise taxes on the wealthy then they'll just move away and we'll wind up with even less! Could the conservatives have been wrong?!? Does it actually turn out that wealthy people can afford to live wherever they like even if that area is more expensive to live in?!!? Impossible!!!

  • I would guess (hope?) that the data sets they sell are somewhat anonymized, like listing people by an i.d. number instead of the person's name, and not including contact information like home address and telephone number. If so then the datasets sold to companies don't contain the personal information that hackers got in this security breach.

  • Quarterbacks aren't known for getting head injuries. Quarterbacks rarely get hit at all, and when it does happen they get hit with the lightest possible force. Aaron Rodgers is probably just his natural unlikable self.

  • You're fixating on the word "wealthy" (indeed a bad word choice) and missing the point. - The only people who can afford to spend months in an unpaid internship are people who come from a family that's well-off enough that the person doesn't need a paycheck to feed and house themself. Poor people literally can't afford to not have a paycheck coming in.

  • No any type of driving mode is the worst! The phone should always operate the same! The most distracting thing when driving is trying to figure out a whole new unfamiliar interface and having to fight with it to get it to do what you want it to do. Your phone should always work the same way

  • To quote King Missile, "there are no points"

There is no point to life
There is no point to death
There is no point in continuing our meetings
There is no point in not continuing our meetings

There is no point in going out
There is no point in staying in
    No point in gaining weight
And no point in staying trim

There is no point in answering the phone or opening the mail
There is no point in getting drunk or doing drugs
And there is no point in staying sober

There is no point in needing someone
And no point in being alone
There is no point in doing nothing
And no point in not doing nothing

These are all good points, yet none of them lead anywhere
None of them are points at all
    There are no points
    There is no point
