  • It makes perfect sense. Cigarettes are cancer death machines in an addictive package. They should be banned. However, we've learned from hard experience that making addictive drugs harder to get just leads to addicts trying even harder to get them. So what's a practical solution? Grandfather in the current addicts and try like hell to keep everyone else away from it.

Equality doesn't come in to this. You do not, in fact, need to protect people's right to addictive cancer sticks.

  • 80% of the US population, and about half of the world population, lives in urban areas.

By 2050, those figures will be 90% and 75%, respectively.

Planning better urban areas won't help everyone, but it will help the supermajority.

  • Do not colonize other planets. They suck. They have all the downsides of space habitats (needing sealed environment, etc), while also adding more (breaches now let in toxic dust instead of vacuum, cannot control gravity via spin, etc).

Just build O'Neil cylinders. If you can't do that, maybe work on stabilizing the ecosystem we evolved to live in. Nowhere will ever be better than here, folks.

  • You can google it, you know. source 1

Let's see...in 2021, depending on who you ask, between 103 people (FBI) and 700 people (Gun Violence Archive) died in mass shootings. This is as compared to 48,830 deaths from firearms total. So ~1.5%.

As for handguns: "In 2020, the most recent year for which the FBI has published data, handguns were involved in 59% of the 13,620 U.S. gun murders and non-negligent manslaughters for which data is available. Rifles – the category that includes guns sometimes referred to as “assault weapons” – were involved in 3% of firearm murders. Shotguns were involved in 1%."

So above poster was a bit low for purely murders. However, mix in the fact that about 54% of gun deaths are suicides (overwhelming handguns), and the total percentage of gun deaths attributable to handguns is about 80%.

  • I will point out that if you are the DM, you can simply decide a TPK doesn't happen. A Devil Deal is a good way to do this. "Well, the bad guys are overwhelming and there is no way you can win. If you surrender, they will take you prisoner instead of killing you. Or [player name] could stay behind to hold them off while the rest escape. Or [other player] can beg their patron for help, although it might cost you later..."
