  • TIL. Thanks! Knew about wet wipes obviously. But first time I heard of this grease thing.

Apparently it's mostly an issue in the US due to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_trap so might be more common knowledge there. Apparently here as long as you're not pouring large amounts but just as whatever naturally occurs on pans, especially if you mix it with washing up liquid as you wash dishes, it is ok.

  • clean up after the parents

Huh? I live on my own and cook for myself and have for 10 years. My parents live in a different country and I've not even seen or spoke to them in like 6 years so I don't get what you mean to imply there.

I just haven't heard of this phenomenon before. I've never had any drainage issues either. Maybe in the shower due to hair, but never in the kitchen. I've just literally never heard of this, ever, my parents definitely never did this back in my home country, nor have I ever seen anyone do this in any of the countries I've been to or the one I currently live in.

I've lived with roommates, at boarding school, and with a partner, and not once have I seen them not pour grease down the drain either, least of all in a jar.

Doing some surface level research it seems like primarily an American thing. As long as you're not pouring litres of pure grease down the drain it should be ok to just wash down what naturally comes off pans etc. as you wash them, especially mixed with washing up liquid. Maybe I'm just not very greasy idk.

    What is "lucky 10g"?

  • There's not really "public" per se.

It'll be handled by a private contractor owned by private equity that specializes in leeching taxpayer dollars same as everything. The tender will be won by those who can promise the local govt officials the best jobs at said private contractor or sister/parent company after their term.

Even if by some miracle the city/municipality has its own teams for this work, they'll be nickel and dimed by checkbox ticking legislation that exists as breeding ground for middlemen consultants who will suck away taxpayer dollars.

That is until some "budget hawk" type consultancy is brought in by some bigger fish whether it's the city or the state or the fed or the fucking IMF if you're Greece and force privatisation in the name of efficiency.

This will lead to a collapse of the service quality, collapse of living standards and a declining trust in institutions, leading to a far-right takeover because in the end - most people are monsters.

Or something like that I imagine. I used to work for the NHS in the UK. The owner of the trust "convinced" the procurement to allow the company to make a "surplus". He drove a Porsche and looked like a 90s movie villain.

So yes, pour that shit. And don't feel bad - the ghouls wouldn't, and we're all just human after all.

  • This is my first time hearing of this ngl. Actually I'm not entirely sure what "grease" means, is it what is left from oil and butter after cooking meats? Meat juices? I've always poured it down the drain. Never even heard of anyone doing otherwise, least of all putting it in a jar.

  • My nearest grocery store is 0.4km away point to point on gmaps, it's an 8 min walk in one direction, entirely via pedestrian only areas with no road crossings on flat road. I consider this to actually be a bit far, as in the previous city I lived in I had a convenience store 3 min walk away.

I think your friend is messing with you.

  • I earn almost double and I can't say I have any hobbies that require spending money anymore, unless upskilling for work counts as a hobby.

Almost all of my hobbies are centered around spending less money, e.g. building an offline music collection to move off Spotify, homelab stuff to host navidrome & jellyfin to move off having any subscription services.

I did buy an acoustic guitar I've been absolutely in love with lately. Was pretty cheap for a guitar (£200) but that's something I suppose.

I was saving for a house but by the time I could afford even the shittiest mortgage I might have to flee the country and as such lose all the gains in my LISA. Might as well live a little I guess.

  • 3 months at the absolute most, likely significantly less, even after cutting out all "luxuries" like paying for internet/phone/electricity/water.

70% of that would go on rent for my 1-bed flat. And no - I don't live in a big city. I earn more than most. I spend less than most. I don't use any subscription services and I pirate everything. I don't drink, and I never go out to pubs, cinema, (insert paid activity here) because all of that is way too expensive.

    The UK is fucked.

Literally the only thing that decides how long I can live is whether or not you rent - whatever you do or don't do as personal responsibility practically does not matter unless you own a house.

The small variations in rent price are also irrelevant, I used to pay more for less, in the grand scheme of things the variance only amounts to £100-200 per year and usually depends on how much you can tolerate free penicillin on the walls.

The blame is only on boomers who hoard property, jack up rents and collect benefits from the gov't off worker taxes. Virtually no one else is to blame apart from capitalism more generally.

The same boomers will also soon elect the alt-right and things will get a lot worse and everywhere else seems to be on the same general trajectory.

I used to dream of a utopia like Star Trek. Now 28 days later looks like a utopia.

  • Nah as far as I'm aware the CEO is not resigning and there are no leadership changes. They're mostly laying off artists from game studios, software QA, testers, devs they think they can replace with AI vibe coding etc.

  • Careful with that one buster, benzos and booze are a fast track to a forever snooze.

Edit: ok my bad, zopiclone is a nonbenzo after I double checked but don't mess too hard with GABA receptor stuff, those cheeky cunts have a way of messing back with ye.

  • This has been my experience. I find nutritional science incredibly boring, I've tried many times to get excited about it, but I just can't seem to find an 'in' with it to make it my 2-week special interest and learn the basics properly.

At this point the bar is "if you can't explain in one sentence, written, what meal I can make for cheap in less than 1-2 min of active effort and no more than 10 min total prep/cooking time with no skills, effort or culinary knowledge that will be tasty to give me dopamine for the day and feed me for the entire day, I'm not interested".

I just eat bacon, pork sausages, eggs, and throw in some kale, spinach & watercress. I've cut out all bread, sweets, snacks and alcohol. It's probably not healthy but fuck it we all gotta go sometime. Right now though, feels great, I lost a ton of weight. Hard not to overdo it on the salt added to eggs but I keep a close eye on it.

The only negative I've noticed it as I often get hit with random low blood sugar fainting like symptoms after my 2nd-3rd coffee, later I realized I basically was consuming no sugar at all, so now I gulp down 4 red bulls a day with my elvanse for breakfast and the problem went away. MH got way better too.

For dinner I have some frozen pizza or something like that that I can make without any effort or time, but lately it's way way way too much effort to cook/eat.

Wish there was some "nutri-slop 3000" type magic pill that just gave me all nutrients I need for the day so I wouldn't have to worry about this shit.

This is all meant with no offense to nutritionists/scientists, way I see it, y'all doing god's work. Literally. If that lazy mfer bothered existing or got off his ass we wouldn't be cursed with this shit fr.

Edit: Wow what's with the downvotes? Le Reddit hivemind is upset?

  • It was because Proton was still very new relatively speaking, the understanding being that it's potentially fussy and buggy enough that only people with an understanding they're running via a compatibility layer should use it to e.g. reduce game refunds.

I actually really liked the choice. Hopefully we can still at least turn SteamPlay off if we want to, and SteamPlay games are clearly labeled as such vs. native Linux versions.

  • Damn

  • I mean, yeah? That's all job interviews are.

Even not considering the visuals - you're just marketing yourself as more valuable to the corpo than others vying for the same place, regardless of whether you're a man or woman.

But for women there's an extra barrier. Many men, especially on the older side literally do not believe a woman can actually be on-par with a man in your usual blue collar job, nevermind exceed one, they cannot be convinced as such no matter what.

These are the types of men to give you a lecture about how you're not given a voice, but then literally never let you get a word in. This behaviour is so deeply ingrained and internalised it's just not really changeable.

What you can do though is distract from whatever they think your value is by being "nice to look at". Their overall impression will be positive then when it comes to deciding these things at least.

This same strategy has a less commonly needed equivalent of men having a good shot at giving female interviewers a good impression by being charming and sociable.

Lookism is alive and well, always has been, probably always will be.
