  • They are less useful than a Wikipedia search and a dictionary. They can functionally replace humans in 0 fields that were not already automatable by machines. They are useless in any situation that warrants any degree of caution about safety.

85-90% is way over-estimated, it gets significantly worse dealing with specific tasks. And even if it was 85-90%, that's not good enough, even remotely, for just about anything. Humans make errors too, but inconsistently and inversely proportional to experience. This makes no difference to the LLM though, it will always make errors at that exact rate. The kinds of errors it can make are also not just missteps but often pure delusion and very far from what the input was requesting. They cannot reason. They have no rationale. They're imitation in its most empty form. They cannot even so much as provide information reliably.

They also ruin every single industry they come into contact with, and even worse they have utterly destroyed the usability of the internet. LLMs are a net negative for humanity in so many different ways. They deserve as much attention and investment as chatbots did back in 2005.

Their best use case scenario is in churning out an endless amount of lifeless soleless jpg background noise and word salad articles. Their best use case is in tricking people into giving them money or ad revenue. Scamming is the only thing they are anywhere near functionally useful for.

  • Closer to a third voted for him.

We live in an era of mass communication, unlike what was feasible during any other point in history. More now than ever the working class is the working class wherever they are. The working class of the United States have much more in common with us than they do the ruling class.

We should absolutely be promoting an understanding of their struggle. Nationalism is an illness, even if it's nationalism to a non-fascist state.

  • You called it a flawed democracy. I said that it's not flawed it is broken. It's not democratic. The people do not get what they want.

The democratic party "leaves room" for leftists like Bernie Sanders and AOC, in that they can hang around and talk sometimes. Only as long as they have no actual power and can't affect change in any way.

I wasn't aware we were arguing. You didn't respond to 95% of what I said. And that's fine, but you can just say that you can't or don't want to consider anything I've said. You don't have to say that I'm "making a lot of false equivalences"? I'm not really sure what you're referring to by that.

  • If you had read the rest of my first line, the American electoral system has always been broken. This isn't a new state of affairs. The working class of America has been in a perpetual state of manipulation into further and further right-wing politics since at least the presidency of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

He won this election with fewer votes than he lost in 2020. Ultimately, the popular vote is largely irrelevant as the number of votes overall is not what determines who won the election. He won in 2016 without the popular vote. Voter manipulation and strategic disenfranchisment won them that election and this one.

Correct, so the American public had a choice between conservatism and fascism. A state of affairs that outraged many people. The democrats and the Republicans share an interest in their corporate benefactors. They will unite to seek better outcomes for the ruling class at the expense of the working class. The democrats will and have consistently refused to adopt popular politics like those of Bernie Sanders and AOC. Those politics are in contrast to the desires of their benefactors.

The working class has been manipulated through a union of the education system and mass media to indoctrinate them into fascism and further anti worker politics. Even in traditionally democratic held states, there is a persistent refusal to educate children on anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist politics. There is a refusal to educate children on the failures of American democracy and an insistence on nationalist indoctrination. In red states, this is even worse. These problems have existed since at least the presidency of Richard Nixon and to differing extents even before then. American fascism is the system. It didn't start yesterday, and has been manipulating the American working class for a very long time.

Even more than that the entirety of the media and education systems unite to indoctrinate the working class into anti working class politics. It indoctrinates the people into believing civil unrest is wrong, that protest and demonstration is wrong, that all political violence is wrong. This is deliberate. It is a deliberate effort to protect the interests of the ruling capitalist class.

Socialism is an alternative to capitalism. You have been indoctrinated by the capitalist ruling class into believing that socialism has never functioned. It has and continues to do so today. Socialism and authoritarianism are not equivalent concepts. The failure of authoritarian socialist states were failures of authoritarianism, not of Socialism. Capitalists have taken advantage of those failures to manipulate billions of people, like yourself, into seeing Socialism as the problem. It isn't. Capitalism is and has been a global failure. A system that serves the self interests of billionaires is a failure. A system where workers do not own the fruits of their own labor is a failure. A system that tolerates landlords and private corporations is a failure.

  • The US electoral system is broken and has always been broken. Republicans have spent the past 2 decades gerrymandering and introducing as much legislation as possible to manipulate the outcome of elections in as many districts as possible. They've introduced legislation: to prevent people with debt from voting, to prevent people with criminal records from voting, to prevent people who cannot physically make it to polling stations from voting. The Republicans and the ruling class own all the largest media organizations in the United States, and they have weaponized social media and traditional media to indoctrinate and manipulate as many people as possible.

Trump won this election with fewer votes than he lost in 2020. He won mostly because Republicans and Democrats are material allies in neoliberal and imperialist endeavors. Democrats refused to campaign on progressive politics, instead choosing to run on a more conservative campaign than they ever have before.

The working class is not responsible for their own manipulation at the hands of the ruling class. It is not their fault that the system is broken. It is not the fault of American families who literally can not afford to resist, as without the income from their jobs, they will lose their homes and be unable to feed themselves and their children.

Capitalism is the problem. Conservatism, and by extension neoliberalism and fascism, is the problem. Donald Trump is an accelerationist fascist. He will not wait and seeks to plunge the nation headlong into fascism as soon as possible. But do not mistake that as being in opposition to the social and political system of America. Donald Trump is entirely a representative of the failure of American democracy, not a representative of the American people. He manipulated people into voting for him, as evidenced by widespread outrage at his actions even among those who ostensibly voted for him.

  • Fascism is incompatible with any kind of freedom. Free speech is co-opted by conservatives and fascists so that they can promote bigotry without consequence. There is no reason that members of the KKK should be legally allowed to recruit people. That should be against the law. It should be against the law to promote xenophobia, racism, misogyny, and queerphobia. The only people who benefit from a system where you can espouse those beliefs without legal consequence are bigots and fascists.

  • Nah. You shouldn't be able to say Nazi shit in Canada without repercussions. The owner of twitter is a Nazi. It should be banned here. The free market of ideas is a lie told by Nazis to make it legal for them to recruit others into Nazism.

  • This is extremely alarming. This man would be a living nightmare in the midst of a new viral pandemic.

  • To your last part, that would likely end hundreds of millions if not billions of lives. The world population is several times larger than it was during the second world war. A conflict at scale between the United States and China would absolutely be a global conflict.

For no reason other than to illustrate how many lives another world war would take, World War 2 resulted in the loss of life of at least 3% of the world population. That figure in 1946 was somewhere in the range of 70 to 80 million. 3% of the global population today would be 246 million people.

I don't point this out to be snide, just to say that it is absolutely a worst possible case scenario if the United States and China go to war against each other. It would affect the lives of every human being on earth. Those nations do not share land borders. It would mean widespread invasion and destruction of other nations in both hemispheres.

  • One of Canada's worst politicians says he'll do something useful for once.

Incredible watching the downfall of American hegemony in real-time.

  • I really appreciate you sharing your own experiences here, having experienced life in these fundamentalist communities. Youre right, there definitely is far more nuance to the beliefs of right-wing women than just "they feel and think X way." For what it's worth I'm sorry you went through that. I hope that you're in a safer and happier place now.

It is bleak how little we can do for women who are fully indoctrinated into that worldview. They will push back against women's rights every time. Liberation could possibly change some of their minds, but it's impossible to predict. Deradicalization is not a task based in repeatability. It isn't something we can do reliably. It depends entirely on the radicalized individual.

  • They do, but there is an assumption that the relationship between women like that and the wealthy ruling class men they attach themselves to is reciprocal. It, of course, is not.

Take the woman who has a child by Elon Musk. Her and Musk had a romantic getaway and brief liason. She clearly wasn't upset at being pregnant by him. There was an assumption that she'd be cared for. Even if not directly, indirectly. She definitely did not anticipate that she would actually be confined to an apartment 24 hours a day, entirely neglected without any contact from the father of her child. Nor that she'd be left with a child to raise on her own, and no support either financial or emotional or in terms of literal labor.

Call her ignorant and bigoted, both are valid criticisms. But she absolutely was not anticipating this outcome. There is a presumption from conservative/fascist women that they occupy a position of hierarchy over non-fascist/non-conservative women. That by virtue of supporting fascism and patriarchy that fascist men will afford them personhood. They don't believe in any of the assertions of feminism. They instead believe that women who suffer at the hands of men simply deserve it. That all women are judged in some kind of meritocracy, where belief in fascism and support of fascists itself is a determining factor of merit.

They are infuriatingly wrong. But do not be so quick to mischaracterize all conservative/fascist women as knowingly participating in the elimination of their own rights. They are systematically indoctrinated. Inexcusably, I will add. There is no justification for supporting fascists, no justification for supporting violence against women. To combat the ideology they espouse it is crucial to understand not just what they say but what they think.

  • This is correct. Current estimates place a possible impact event at an energy release of ~7.8 Megatons of TNT. Approximately 500 times the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Comparable to the Tunguska Event. This is accounting for current size estimates under 100m in diameter.

It is a very serious asteroid. The Tunguska Event could have killed millions of people. The primary reason it didn't was because it happened in the middle of Siberia. The primary witnesses to the devastation were local native groups who still lived that for out, of which there were few. It wasn't properly investigated for over a decade because of the remoteness of where it happened and the low priority as it didn't affect very many people. If that happened over a major city the consequences would be utterly devastating.

It's not K-T Extinction event level, but it is nonetheless quite serious.

  • The idea of sixth graders threatening to call ICE on their peers is so heinously evil I cannot put it into words. This is the result of fascism. This is what indoctrinating children into racism and xenophobia does. It is a scar on humanity. Every single person who propagandizes this xenophobic racist vile hate ought to be tried and hung like was done at Nuremberg. The architects of genocide are conservative commentators. They are evil in its purest form.

  • This will only lead to the workers' cause being diluted. Leftism is socialism. It is anti capitalism. It is named in opposition to the right wing deliberately. The dichotomy exists for a reason. Our enemies are capitalists. They are the ruling class. Diluting our cause achieves nothing but losing revolutionary momentum.

We need louder leftist voices. We need the messaging to get as far and wide as possible. The far right has been winning at this. They own the tech companies, the social media giants, they run the algorithms. We need to push people further and further off of those platforms and amplify leftist voices as loud as we can. We need more propaganda. We need more organization.

  • It's because they're used to male perspective being the default focal lense for all media they consume. Male gaze is more about perspective than it is about aesthetics, something that has seemingly failed to translate into current online discourse.

In essence, all media in a genre they deem belongs to them must see them as their primary audience and must reinforce the perspective they feel is theirs. It's a kind of patriarchal social egocentrism. Women can exist in those pieces of media, but they have to be defined in relation to a male perspective. This can be a male character within the same work, or it can even be the audience itself by presuming the audience is male.

It's been so pervasive throughout media over the years that they think of this as being "just how media is". When media deviates in really any way that media becomes the aberration of the norm. It can be as simple as one of the female characters having a side plot about her that doesn't involve any of the men, or a female character who isn't sexually appealing to what the current male psyche desires. The media in question becomes inherently an act of political activism. A transgression.

It's notable that media from genres deemed not "belonging to the male perspective" is not judged the same way. Men do not become outraged at chick flicks or romcoms or romance novels. They don't become outraged at drama TV shows made for women about women. Because those things are socially permitted to exist outside of men's perspectives. It's usually seen as unique when a man enjoys media that has a female perspective. It's assumed that he won't. This essentially means that female perspectives in genres they do see as belonging to them comes across as an explicit attack on them. They avoid the female perspective as much as possible, they denigrate it and demean/belittle it constantly. They do not want to be forced to see the female perspective and will actively resist it.

There's lots of examples that go beyond this. Lots of media over the past hundred years has broken the rules and been lauded instead of denigrated. But we live in a time where an organized effort exists specifically to promote patriarchal thinking among men and those efforts mean that more scrutiny is being applied to this than ever before. There are entire content engines driving constantly to produce as much patriarchal outrage content as possible, all the time. And it works.

These problems existed long, long before the modern far-right movement started. It's partly why it works so well. This male egotism in media existed before, and less resistance to it also used to exist. That change in social atmosphere means that men can be manipulated into further and further misogynistic beliefs. All it takes is dogwhistles and a loud, angry, entitled male gamer, and you can radicalize thousands of people into misogyny. And they will repeat that cycle with more or less any boy or man they know.

To make a long story short, anxiety about their perspective not being the default in their favorite genres of media presents a great opportunity to turn young men into fascists. The far right has capitalized on this, and that's why you see so much outrage about it online. It's also likely that algorithms have picked up on you being male and will probably show you more of this exact type of outrage content.
