  • For real. I explicitly append "give me the actual objective truth, regardless of how you think it will make me feel" to my prompts and it still tries to somehow butter me up to be some kind of genius for asking those particular questions or whatnot. Luckily I've never suffered from good self esteem in my entire life, so those tricks don't work on me :p

  • We've been up against the 5Ghz thermal wall for over a decade. We can keep adding cores but we need significantly improved design (less nanometers) for these gains - and these are now running up against another wall, namely quantum tunneling which begins being a problem at around the nanometer scale.

I assume only a radically different architecture (light instead of electricity?) will be able to smash these barriers.

  • NGL, I've been thinking about ways to scam magats on their own social media platforms. They're clearly the most gullible group of people in existence, so they've already self-selected for inability to think critically. Despite that I can't bring myself to actually do it. Scrupules they obviously wouldn't bother with if it was the other way around...

  • My favorite fediposter is /u/pugjesus . Strong mix of memes and actual engaging content. Also, focused on modern politics plus history. The kind of people who would've created the Alaxamenos graffito two thousand years ago.

  • Same age, same disposition.

I try to take it optimistically though: there's no way this body lasts another 40 years, so realistically we won't have to suffer for that much longer.

  • Just ordered a new video card to replace my 6-year old one simply because I fear prices are going to go up with 20-35% across the board for all PC parts worldwide. Without this threat looming I would definitely have held off for another year or so.

  • Interesting point. In the past, "fair" ways to divide a heritage often led to split kingdoms and fast power loss. That is why societies with "unfair" division rules, like the Vikings where EVERYTHING went to the first-born son, so no divisions, absolutely rocked hard in their primes since they weren't prone to being weakened every time their ruler died.

  • Because it's primarily a way for (old) societies to foster a war-ready populace. If most women are taken by just a select few men who can afford to, that leaves tons of young males without a mate and prospect of a family.

Those are absolutely prime candidates for the military. So if you know your ideology has a stranglehold on the culture, this is how you generate "unlimited" soldiers for your cause.
