  • I've played Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3 on Linux and both work fine.

  • It doesn't really matter which distro you use for gaming, just get one that is popular and well-supported such as Kubuntu or Fedora or Pop!_OS or whatever. Ones like Arch and Gentoo would be pretty complicated so I wouldn't recommend those until you feel comfortable.

  • You could try OpenTracks, I used it a few years ago and it was pretty good.

  • Since that gpu has 24 GB of vram the game might be using more than it really needs, just because it can. The best way to test the importance of vram would be to get two cards of the same tier with different vram amounts (like the A770 8GB and 16GB) and see how that impacts performance.

  • York or Almond Joy

  • I've been using NixOS and I've never had to worry about my system, because even if I did break it I can just wipe it and reinstall from my config files and it'll be almost exactly the same as before.

  • It was really cool seeing comments and upvotes change in real time, but I understand it was buggy and terrible for server performance and I'm glad it's better and more stable now.

  • Most distros are almost exactly the same, NixOS and Guix are a bit different but if you get Ubuntu or Fedora or PopOS or something they all work fine.

  • It's theoretically possible right now if you use specific drivers with an AMD GPU and use Gamescope, but that's not very easy or usable. KDE Plasma 6 is going to release in February with HDR support so that should be nice, and Cosmic is being worked on and should support HDR as well when it comes out.

  • I like using NixOS on my desktop, and it does have a rolling release channel, but it can be pretty complicated to learn. Messing around on the Macbook would be a good way to learn and try it out, and then copying your config to your pc would be easy.

  • Yeah, NixOS has both stable and rolling release channels so you can choose which you want to use, and you can even use unstable packages while on the stable channel. And you can just not update for a couple months and it'll be fine.

  • Your limit goes to infinity???

  • Also can try setting Linux as the default boot option

  • Hell yeah

  • I just use Git for my nixos config files.

  • I switched to NixOS almost two years ago, and it's really nice being able to define my whole system in a single set of config files. If my hard drive dies or I switch computers, I can just reinstall NixOS using my config files and everything will be set up the exact same way. It's extremely solid and I don't need to baby my system because if it breaks I can just reinstall everything back to normal.

And I can share parts of the config between devices, so when I change my Neovim or VSCodium configs using Home-Manager it gets synced to my other devices, as well as being saved as part of my NixOS config files.

  • How do I remove a post from my feed and from my brain?
