  • Yeah, I'm saying a whole lot of people say it with a "shun" at the end. I blame the media and people originally trying to differentiate themselves from a perception of being an ignorant hillbilly. The hillbilly prejudice is much better now, but I was still personally encountering it even in the aughts. And the pronunciation has stuck because "that's the way you've always heard it said. "

Everyone who lives in those hills (with the exception of a few pockets of yankees) says it "at-chan".

  • Idk, Japanese onsen baths are really, really hot. Maybe not literally boiling, but I felt like it was. And hot baths for sore muscles wouldn't be a whole thing if it wasn’t producing some kind of tenderizing effect.

(I'm mostly saying this in jest. Mostly.)

  • The mountain range on the eastern side of the U.S. is the 'apple-at'chans'. At least nearly everyone from the southern end of them say it that way (source: I'm from there).

'Apple-ay-shuns' is just as strange as saying 'Nor-folk'. Immediate indicator of you're an outsider.

  • What kind of motivation? For performing one's job? For hobby projects? For cooking vs ordering out?

For example, if I have to do a major deep clean and I haven't reached the point where it's bothering me sufficiently to self-start, I'll watch an episode or two of Hoarders and that seems to do the trick to put me in a headspace where I'm literally itching to enthusiastically and violently attack a mess.

For work, I'll put on music like https://youtu.be/kGhHPX_TaI0

    or https://youtu.be/wELOA2U7FPQ

For cooking...I haven't found a video to kickstart me, but I usually have to plan ahead for the day, try not to get sidetracked in the late afternoon (which seems to be my hyperfocus time of day), and guard how many spoons I have left by mealtime in order to feel up to cooking. It helps to play a favorite podcast while I cook. The favorite podcast method also works great for doing dishes & laundry.

  • That was last night at the family gathering. Why was the tv volume on at all? Everyone was shouting to be heard over everyone else. The amount of questions directed at me and me not able to string two thoughts together to reply intelligently because someone turned it on some bakeoff marathon and then hid the effing remote.
