  • I didn’t know reddit gave out the personal details of their users, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

You make it sound like they have a choice, or do so freely and willingly.

The article is clear on that they don't freely share without assessment though:

Reddit wasn’t willing to go along with the request, at least not in full. The company objected, arguing that handing over the requested information would violate its users’ right to anonymous speech.

Recent legal activity shows that Reddit doesn’t intend to automatically comply with all user information requests.

  • Creating the list made me wonder what more I could list so I took a peek into my music collection. Maybe Neil Young, which reminds me of my deceased mother (I didn't include it here). Or other genres that would fit too, given that I do listen to a lot of or more of other genres. I found more highlights:

  • How small is small? And what happens beyond it?

    • You can choose an instance that gives you like-minded people and an intentional community (like feddit.de for a German instance, or programming.dev for all things development and programming related, or ani.social for anime communities, or beehaw.org for a more vetted signup and member approach for a more social and healthy userbase)
    • Lemmy is federated meaning despite this separation into instances users can read and participate in communities and posts of other instances
    • Instances can choose to not federate or to block other instances according to their choices (another reason to choose your instance according to your intentions and expectations or usage pattern)
    • You can link posts, add text to the post, and edit post titles after posting

Those are probably the most obvious and usage facing differences. Additionally:

    • Lemmy is a platform of free and open source software, open to customizations and collaboration
    • Lemmy instances are run by groups and individuals, it's open to people and groups joining with their own instances
    • As such, both in software source and platform, Lemmy is a community project whereas Reddit is a private company (soon a public company owned by shareholders)
    • Lemmy has an open API allowing for custom client, bot, and other integrations
    • Lemmy uses the open ActivityPub protocol, so it can interact with many other platforms like Mastodon, KBin, etc

In many other ways, it is similar to Reddit. Like having upvotes and downvotes. Lemmy is still young, so it will improve in terms of functionality and annoyances.

  • I don't think it should be a client feature. It should be federated, like the posts are.

  • I feel like cross-posts should share comment threads…

Now comment threads are split across 6 communities.

  • It's a 1080p monitor, so you won't be hitting the limits of HDMI vs DisplayPort bandwidth.

    The product spec page says

    • Display Port: 1920 x 1080 (Up to 144Hz)
    • HDMI™1.4: 1920 x 1080 (Up to 144Hz)

Freesync can be used seemingly from DisplayPort 1.0, or with HDMI 1.2+ (protocol extension) or HDMI 2.1+ if your monitor supports it.

G-Sync must be through DisplayPort 1.2 or higher.

If you render at 144 Hz you won't be needing or seeing anything noticeable from variable refresh rates. It's most useful at lower framerates. So it depends on how (fast) your games/engines will render moreso than the refresh rate and cable.

You said in a comment your monitor supports Freesync, so HDMI 1.4 is likely useable for variable refresh rates through Freesync. Either way you can skip it with a high refresh rate of 144 Hz.

  • I can't get what it describes through all the Jedi stuff and jokes.

One mentor and one apprentice? And everything else remains unspecified and open?

For FOSS, as it is described, it makes me think it's a big investment with unclear risk (will they even stay as a contributor?). Which of course can be contextualized - but then what is left here?

  • I love when teaser text is an ad. /s

  • What's a struggle session?

Inbox fright is an interesting term. I certainly know and can relate to what you are talking about.

It doesn't affect me too much I don't think, but I know the feeling you are talking about. And I wonder how related or intersecting to/with social anxiety it is.

  • Act now

I was expecting some suggestions to act or unite in opposition. The linked post has none of that though, despite its title. It's a rant/criticism, not a call to action.

  • I sometimes do things (cleanup, refacs) off-ticket / not part of the ticket. It can be a light alternative when other stuff is complicated and demotivating. Depending on your environment and team/contract setup, simply doing it could be more difficult though.

If it serves your satisfaction and productivity, and is good for the product, then it's not wasted. Not everything has to be - or even can be - preplanned.

  • Wtf is that intro. I'd have been interested in what the title teases, but that off tangents/topic (for supposed lightening humor) made me leave.

  • I assume this is about the hosted platform WordPress.com, not the software you and others can host and offer.

  • Or Modified Viable/Valuable Product
