  • I mean yeah... so?

Listen I get it, plucky young upstart, who wants to get into college, that's the story everyone loves to read about?

But think about the opportunity. Daughter A has everything, comes from a better school, every tutor, every computer, every summer camp, devotes her life to some subject.

Daughter B has nothing, ends up having to work at 15, misses school days because of sick family, doesn't always have someone to help her with homework and so on.

Daughter A is likely to have higher grades, attendance, performance, ability and skill. More awards, recognition, accomplishments, and potential. She even might be slightly ahead in college courses just arriving at school.

So if you were the schools admission officer in what world do you think B is a better fit than A? A is probably more set on their dream of doing X and has the funds to reach it where B might have to leave school because of a lack of funds or a family obligation. And besides which is more likely to give more money to the school? (As much as they don't want to say it, come on schools are businesses we know this)

Now I get it, we want B to have an opportunity and a chance, and she should, but rich people already have all the benefits in life, even if you remove their wealth, you literally would have to actively ignore a rich student to place a truly poor student above them. But when you take away all the other accomplishments, you likely won't harm our A student , but you'll harm versions of B who has gotten awards, recognition, accomplishments, did well on SAT, and so on

Let's change it then, we want to only take in students who fit X or Y criteria. Maybe go to an inner city school, maybe X amount of community service, maybe has a hard luck story. The thing is... with in a full cycle (3-4 years). We'll start seeing the rich students move towards those groups. Now B might not be in an inner city school but Daughter A would suddenly be there if that's what it would take. She will still get tutored so she's not as harmed by it, but she can also satisfy those requirements because her parents have enough money to make it happen.

The point I'm making is it's near impossible to offset "being rich" in any meaningful way that would last long enough to be worth it. What you'd end up hammering is the Upper middle class who has just enough money to be seen as rich, but not enough money to truly use it the way the "True rich" does.

  • I am not disagreeing with you, but you also have to think, maybe the system is designed in such a way that all trials are made to take up as much time. The prosecutors need to build a case, but it seems it's part of the legal proceeding instead of done before that. That means they can arrest someone that they think do it, and continue to work on the case.

Yes there's multiple legal challenges and appeals but all of those are now required as part of the legal process. Imagine if you're a prosecutor, and the client says he wants a speedy trial, but you know you need an extra two or three weeks, you make an accident that means they have to go to the appeals court. Now you get your two or three weeks.

It's not that straight forward, but the idea of a "Speedy trial" doesn't feel like it exists in moden America because a good lawyer knows that the appeals process may need to happen.

Personal story My daughter was caught "Stoned" at a school dance... The vice principal took her over to the police, (That fucking bitch and we'll see why). The police did a sobriety test, Concluded she was under the influence. Suspended for a week from school for it, arrested, we had to go get her.

So my wife and I didn't know, we saw all those "no one knows what their kids are doing" So we went and got her drug tested for marijuana thinking it was that. That's what she was suspended for. Conclusive proof no, she was not on it. She wasn't drunk, she wasn't high.... Went to the school with that, school upheld their suspension. It took more than a week, and multiple visits up the school chain including the super intendent and the board. Finally they shut the shit down, chastise the school for not repealing the suspension, and removed it from her record. This was two months later. But my daughter was already outed in front of everyone for this, she lost a week from school (honestly I'd say she never really recovered from that, went home school next semester, in the next 2.5 years, graduated with a Associates two weeks before her high school graduations, so proud of here).

The court case though hung over us for 6 months. We had conclusive evidence she was not on Marijuana. But here's the thing, if the state wanted to be a dick they still could have tried her and said "Some substance". We wanted a speedy resolution, 6 months this was on all our minds. Lawyer said it'd be dropped, but you know... until it's dropped we can't relax. Finally case dismissed ultimately, we had to pay 3-7k (Can't remember) to a lawyer (Friend of a friend, thank god we had no idea who to go to). And everything was finally resolved. Lucky to know that lawyer, lucky we had proof, lucky we trusted our daughter (Ok admittedly not fully at first). And that is why that vice principal is a fucking bitch, because she tried to criminalize our daughter and almost ruined her academic career. She still tenses up around police (Which admittedly may be the right thing to do)

"speedy trial"... That shit don't exist, my friend.

  • If you know you're not going be successful in your case, but still want to make an example out of someone that would be the way... Almost two years in jail so far.

If you read more, you really start to see how messed up it is. They're all at the same jail but have what sounds like no contact with each other kept in isolation.

If you know anything about isolation in prison it's pretty much a new form of torture that is somehow legal. Worse, when the kid was arraigned his parents weren't even allowed to be there. The whole thing is really fucked, but shows how mess up the government is with this sort of thing.

The prosecution has done a great job of poisoning the pool and putting out as much as they can how bad they are as parents, but this all just feels wrong at a fundamental thing. Especially because these two are never going to have a normal life after this.

  • Doesn't break 60 as it has 63, but I think it still counts. Ang Lee's The Hulk. Ok listen, Abomination isn't great, and the hulk stuff is a snoozer. But I think it's the first and only movie with the Hulk in it that actually GOT the hulk. It's more a cerebral picture about Bruce Banner dealing with all of this, rather than an action movie. The Hulk is Bruce's failure, not his super hero. Edward Norton did a great job with the role, and honestly it really is worth a watch, just focus on the Bruce more than the Hulk and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Edit: Lol. Both replies are right, Louis Leterrier's Hulk Movie. Which sits at... . 67. The post remains!

  • The problem is that Solar and Wind doesn't work as a viable solution everywhere, so if the choice is between do nothing or start nuclear, you go nuclear.

Instead America has done neither and waited as have many countries.

If Solar and wind can work, and they are as fast as you say, of course you go wind and solar, the problem is that's not the case in many places.

  • cheaper and vastly safer alternative techs are available?

That's the problem "cheaper and vastly safer" alternatives AREN'T always available. People continue to talk up Solar, and Wind, but they're not viable for a majority of users of coal and natural gas plants. To produce the power that Nuclear does in square mile of land, you need 50 square miles of solar at least, and over 360 square miles for Wind. And that's also saying you need viable places, because Wind turbines can't just be thrown up anywhere, nor can solar.

Coal and Natural gas is more efficient by a factor of at least 10 in land space.

If you're in the middle of nowhere, that's viable, if you live in a big city, that's going to become a problem quickly.

  • For sure, they have a serious problem with how to monetize their user base, but if someone asks "Well after the exodus"... they'll just turn around and say "At the end of July we had the most user ever interacting with our system, our future is healthy.

Honestly, reddit is going to become a more decrepit place over the next five years, especially with this IPO. It's turning point hasn't happened yet, but it's definitely starting to move towards it.

  • There was a time when nuclear was the right choice, but now it is just not cost effective nor can it be brought online fast enough to make a dent in our problems

And in ten years.. it'll be too long to add nuclear ... And in ten years it'll.

Solar and wind works in some places, it doesn't work in all places, and the goal is to start moving away from Coal and Natural gas, it's a long process no matter which way you go, but starting to add more nuclear capactiy so in 10 years we can use it, isn't a bad thing.

"It's too late" has also been a refrain about Nuclear, but hey, in 2010 if people started to go nuclear, we'd have that capacity today, instead it was too late then, and we can only go solar and Wind... and we're still lacking.

  • "Nuclear power scares me"

Welcome to the result. It's sad, because nuclear power was the way, but instead we propegandized against it and continued to use it as a boogie man.

Ignoring the fact that coal and natural gas still hurt and kill people daily, ignoring there's over 400 nuclear power reactors that are still active, 93 in America... But no.. "Chernobyl" and the discussion ends.

Also Chernobyl was a 50 year old design, and happened 40 years ago, involved multiple human errors ... nah can't consider things have changed since then.

Now we have people using another nuclear plant in Ukraine as an example, and again the fear rises. They're trying to weaponize the plant, but somehow it's "Nuclear power" and not the fact some fuckheads are planning to destroy it in a destructive fashion that's the problem.

Somehow dams that would be devistating to destroy are given a pass, but hey Nuclear power, so scary.

  • People keep talking about this, but the number of new accounts even if they are bots, probably look great for reddit's IPO.

This is all in pursuit of that all mighty dollar. This was not a random surprise at all.
