  • Yes, but it's not documented, so it's not actionable, and the people not in management who end up getting the bonuses or raises in any given year often actively work to undermine any efforts to speak out or organize against these practices.

They pick enough people to actually get the pat on the head to keep the workers collectively destabilized and worried about what each other are saying.

I once had a manager -- who was new to being in charge of reports -- just outright admit in my annual review that he had to find negatives to ding me with when I asked him why no one had ever mentioned any of the issues he was bringing up to me at any time before the review. But when my closest co-workers (who were in other departments) were the ones who got the 5-star ratings and the raises, it would have just come across as sour grapes if I had said something.

It's not that hard to socially engineer an environment where it looks like individual efforts are encouraged and rewarded while simultaneously discouraging those efforts and refusing to reward them when they pay dividends.

  • Not explicitly, maybe, but implicitly, absolutely, and in multiple ways:

    • Supporting the system that creates one over the other
    • Having 'bootstrap' attitudes about the poor
    • Worrying about property value over utilization
    • Complaining about the homeless rather than the lack of action on housing
    • Voting against people who run on public housing

In so, so many ways, people say they prefer the latter over the former. Usually just with the caveat that the homeless people also be invisible.

  • Was your GM paying attention to the events shown in the previous few strips in this series? Like, I know the people around you can sometimes know before you do, but Razira sure was flirting heavy for someone who didn't know she was doing it.

  • Yeah, it wasn't politics that had the cops hugging the Border Blockaders, or carrying food and water for the Ottawa Occupiers.

Politics kept Trudeau from calling a state of emergency earlier. It was soemthing else entirely that had cops singing kumbaya with people calling for the Prime Minister's death.

  • Or just be less paranoid. You have to register to vote in Canada, but you can do it automatically when filing your taxes, or at the polls with your government ID, OR at the polls with a piece of mail and an already registered voter to vouch for you. They just write your name and address down to forward to the federal or provincial elections agency, nave your voucher sign a form, and then give you a ballot.

  • Look, if Elon was trying to ruin Twitter, it would be flourishing right now.

His backers maybe wanted to destroy the brand and the service, and they chose the right guy for the job if so, but the only thing Elon does is seek praise and attention.
