  • It's distressing how often the track of inventors has been overtaken by the plans of hyper-capitalists.

    • Tesla cars were invented by Elon Musk Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, who were then cut out by their investor to enshittify the interface.
    • Keurig coffee pods were invented by a pair of roommates that wanted them to become recyclable so they wouldn't cause so much waste.
    • Blizzard used to make fun games, and is now bought out by people that don't.

I still need to put out my big, long-form video promoting the Accountable Capitalism Act - something that could lead a large body of software devs at a big company to be present for the big-shift plans to, say, "Remove error messages from Windows!" and tell their bosses: Hell no. The same style of issue exists in many industries.

  • The increasing size of American cars has done a lot of damage to our roads. They’re less safe for the roads, for pedestrians, and even sometimes for the occupants.

Tangentially, thanks to red light structure in the city, I often make just as much forward progress as the cars around me on my bike.

  • Especially since far-right groups have been falling for Musk's same bullshit in Europe.

There's been reports that Germany's AFD party fell out of favor after their news got to see how Trump played out. I seriously hope that ends up being true in their next election.

  • 50501 refers to "Fifty States, Fifty Protests, One Movement" (originally "One Day"). While some states have more presence than others, it has 50 chapters for the 50 states.

I don't think there's as much presence on Lemmy, but lots of media gets posted to Reddit at https://www.reddit.com/r/50501/.

Their website also links to social media accounts covering more of it: https://www.fiftyfifty.one/

  • This might be a dumb idea, but I may buy this game just to make up for all the baseless hate it’s been hit by. Maybe just to avoid shareholder claims of “See, people prefer historical accuracy. Hence black people are banned in all future games.”

I haven’t really even tracked much of Ubisoft games for a while, and I recognize usually they’re pretty mindless open world fun - personally I’m often fine with that.

  • I'll have to be honest and admit back when I was in high school or so, I was enthusiastic about electric cars and his seemed like some of the best. He was also opening up the charging standards so that there could be a mixed playing field. Back then, I was likely ready to dismiss small critiques as the retaliation of the fossil fuel industry.

    God I hate old me.

  • It is in fact common for presidents to make up new advisory positions. If Trump wanted to make up an "Advisor of Best-Tasting Coffee", there's no problems there - they can help him make decisions with executive orders, or inform Congress about best steps forward for certain initiatives, etc. So just "making up a role" isn't an issue in itself.

BUT, even the attorney general or SoD would not have powers to fire people at will all over the administration. In many court cases it's been found even Trump himself wouldn't have that power.

  • Much like certain other trends like 3D TVs, this helps us see how often "visionaries" at the top of a company are charmed by ideas that no one on the ground is interested in. Same with blockchain, cryptocurrency, and so many other buzzwords.

So maybe I'll mention it again: The Accountable Capitalism Act would require 40% of a company's board be made up of democratically voted employees, who can provide more practical input about how top-level decisions would affect the people working there.

  • I had a guy in my Discord following some insane moon logic about how ranked choice voting has some concerns because people could “tactically put their preferred option second to game the system”. He tried about five times and still could not convince us that water is dry.

  • I've even wanted to bring up Valve in some recent political discussions on corporate governance. With the blatant exception of CSGO child-focused gambling, it is otherwise the "shining ideal" of a good company: They invented a product that people like and enjoy, maintain it well to please their customers, and pay their employees well without growing excessively or finding ways to cheat customers out of their money.

  • I learned about this only recently, and was very disappointed on this.

It's made me examine my own biases that I've only "grumbled" about Biden's relatively quiet acceptance of Israeli genocide, and now understanding he deported protestors. I'd desperately want to understand what drives the tacit support there. That said: The "Genocide Joe" tagline didn't ever convince me.

EDIT: Wow, and now I'm being thrown back in a loop and wondering if the links I just came across earlier today were correct, or if I was reading info out of context. Sounds as though, yes, ICE kept deporting in often suspect circumstances under Biden, but those were unrelated to protests? I'll...leave this comment up as a public lesson in how easy it is to be misinformed while I keep reading to understand as best I can.
