I think reddit always favored desktop.

I was doing a bit of a bit anyway. Kind of a long standing, very niche, very low level background rivalry between desktop and mobile users. In the same vein as iOS vs android but even more irrelevant and pointless. My favorite type of bit.

We do have those? Unless you mean something for pc. In which case my followup is who the hell is viewing lemmy (or reddit, etc.) on a desktop?

Ah ok. I’ve seen that project before. Might take another look, although I usually just use Firefox or forks of it. Kind of soured on chromium browsers after Google announced for the 800th time, and for real this time (they said), that they would be blocking ad blockers. I just said fuck it, time to blast the past like it’s 2006 again

I goggled it after reading your comment and found the same info. It’s pretty common for small projects to get started and abandoned quickly, but in this one specific case I do want to read a comment from that group of developers years later if it was fear, boredom, whatever else that made them abandon it

At the risk of using an overused phrase… this could be called “manufacturing consent.” The media (who owns the media btw? Oh… the corporations do…weird) writers have a task before them: convince people that corporate control is good and further is inevitable. At first you get some pushback. You keep publishing similar articles for months, maybe years, and then one day take that exact action and by then the overall public has been beaten down by the deluge of “it’s gonna happen!” that most of the people who used to “care” sigh, shrug, and go “well, it was always going to happen.” Besides, what were you really ever going to do about it? (Side note this is why it’s hilarious when right wingers cry THE MEDIA IS CENSORING ME 1984! They think their crying and shitty opinions matter to those who actually run things. Spoiler: they love it when you cry online, openly. It’s cathartic for you and makes you less likely to ever do anything cough that would actually cause any type of cough cough changes)

It’s an insidious tactic. I think people generally know it’s happening, and yet it still works. Even on those who are the most aware, the most engaged, I still become fatigued and fall into nihilism eventually on most stuff. This all feeds into an overarching theme of capitalism and liberalism and how it crushes the humanity from everyone eventually and makes us all complicit in our daily destruction of ourselves and society.

It’s honestly hilarious when you realize liberals simultaneously think Russia is still literally the USSR (so communist, aka the bad guys!) but also fascist or at least far right wing (those explaining why American conservatives like the Russians (in the liberal’s mind)). Remember Putin and Trump are, to US libs, and that brainpoison spills over to the world (sorry), best buds, in cahoots, modern Hitler and Mussolini. But when confronted with the history of Ukraine back to WWII until the day before Putin invaded where everyone knew and acknowledged they had HEAVY white supremacist/Nazi shit going on* well they can’t explain why two right wing countries are fighting in simplistic “good liberal nation vs the evil bad commie-fascist country!” I don’t really know where I was going with this besides being entertained by the denial of reality in Ukraine, the history of NATO, the reality that Russia is in no fucking way the USSR (they keep proposing this idea of THE USSR IS REUNITING! Treating the Soviet Union as if it were some sort empire held together by the tyrannical evil Russian orcs (which is of course exactly how the weirdo right wingers think of it)). Just absolutely zero historical knowledge, even basic levels, and/or contortions to make the US somehow good or make NATO good and justified in its existence. No one on any politically viable side in the US (R and Ds) is even considering a proper anti-war stance. They won’t even consider admitting policies of the US for the past 100 years towards the USSR and then the Russian Federation, especially the last 3 decades, led directly to Russia being how it is with Putin in charge.

I don’t know an apt comparison, but the US is like a person who lives their entire life stealing and murdering people and when anyone along the way calls out their shit they get offended with “how dare you! I’m the good guy!” Maybe something like the mafia but on the world scale. They break the windows and threaten the owners and anyone steps out of line or questions why they get to take shit all the time they get their knees busted or killed. Just a giant criminal racket held up and enforced by scumbags and then romanticized by those same scumbags and their beneficiaries.

So a Brave fork would be all the good parts of it (the ad blocking chiefly) but minus the bad parts like the crypto BS. Maybe that’s an entirely different project, I don’t know. I just use Firefox+ubo on desktop. Doesn’t matter that much to me if someone does it or not, but I was always confused why privacy-centric people seemed to love the crypto browser.

As an American I also hate my fellow hogs. I like to believe I'm different and redeemable, maybe I am, but I also kinda feel like I deserve to burn with the rest of them when the time comes. Something along the lines of "America is irredeemable, deserves no mercy and will receive none."

People probably use different accounts to filter content. Instead of flipping around settings and shit you just have one account for reading all the mindmelting horrible shit and another where you don’t subscribe to any of that. Who knows though

Change this to “you can do that now with…some very basic tools” and we have a deal. I mean, that’s the way it goes sometimes. I know it’s like “duh just be like this!” Type statement but people really shouldn’t ever attach themselves to websites, brands, etc. Always be mentally ready to walk away. That doesn’t mean walk at the first shitty experience, but, you know. Gotta know when to ol’ yeller something and reddit passed that point a long time ago. Discord is my personal ol’ yeller project right now besides reddit. Trying to get people to move off since they’re just becoming greedier and greedier + it’s centralized as fuck and they’re starting to make moves, it seems, towards more censorship there despite that kind of being the opposite of what people came to expect.
