  • And ceos are somehow significantly worse and consistently (and in many industries), almost exclusively make decisions directly opposing the common good including intentionally leading the world forward into societal and ecological collapse and quadrupling down on that stance.. Because it makes them more quarterly profit. I guess we just have to let AI do it.

  • And this is why peertube will never actually take off outside of a Utopian future of unlimited energy and a future where everything is perfectly distributed

Who is going to pay the hosting costs? Who is going to pay the bandwidth costs? Let's say magic happens and the users donate enough for that. Who is going to pay the creators who that is their main source of income?

Now what will happen when people demand 4k content everywhere, and then 8k after that? That quadruples the cost of the bandwidth and hosting costs.

I absolutely hate hate hate subscription models and hate ads. There has to be a subscription model for any video hosting platform, and YouTube doesn't split up into exclusivity deals like shitty steaming services to screw over the consumer for profit. So at least there is that.

Decentralized systems work extremely well for text and even audio-based services. Video is a whole other beast, especially long form video at high resolutions.

  • It's funny because rich people notoriously do NOT pay the wages of police because they tax dodge so hard that it often crosses the line of illegal, even with all of the extremely pro-mega-rich laws and exemptions that america has.

  • I listened to a ton when I bike to and from work. 40 minutes gets like 2 episodes a day, plus when I am at work

  • If you are in the EU,

    https://www.loopearplugs.com/

These things are pretty awesome. They have the switch which allows you to change the DB drop depending on what you are using them for (or how loud the specifically concert is)

My girlfriend has some noise sensitivity and they help her a lot just to put them on the lowest dB drop setting or the middle in a busy environment.

  • I am going different on this one.

An awl on a utility knife.

Nowadays, 99% of camping, hiking, and "survival" equipment is light weight composites that can be better fixed with glue, tape, small needle and thread, or a patch with one of the above. There are very few alternative uses for it that aren't better with a different standard tool.

  • There were many bad translations, and many purposefully bad ones.

Is it easier to exert control over a population with eternal damnation or proportional punishment?

  • I love just straight up lying. I wish it was 1¢ per GB. Maybe the most dirt cheap Chinese off-brand that only has 1/2 of its listed capacity usable because it is a refurb labelled as new. 100€ for a 10TB is insane.

Even going higher capacity to get a lower price per GB, 10TB drives are around 300€. That is 0.03€ per GB. 20TB drives are around 525€. (These are just consumer drives too, enterprise is significantly more expensive for the MTBF ratings) Still 0.026€ per GB. Once you get into ultra high capacity, it starts going up again because of tech limitations.

  • I wish that we could get KNX ETS6 in WINE. But it has a USB component though many or most people use IP configuration instead.

  • Yup, Sharon stone and dicaprio, 1995

  • Disney's robin hood and robin hood men in tights were big during my childhood so I like them for the nostalgia.

    Kingsmen movies are fun

The quick and the dead with decaprio is very bad but I enjoy it.

  • Oh no! I really hope this doesn't start happening to all of the CEOs and board members that make a profit off of legally killing people

  • Yeah it is a many decades long issue of Israel literally pushing over Palestinians houses with bulldozers to expand their territory, beating and sometimes killing the owners of the houses, then calling it "settling". Then Palestinians being radicalized and carrying out attacks (and terror attacks) against Israel. Then Israel responding with complete ethnic cleansing genocide and teaching their entire country that the Palestinians aren't human and kidnapping torturing them in Nazi-ways.

It is pretty much exactly the US vs Native Americans of the modern day. Down to the difference in funding, available technology differences, starvation tactics, and genocide. I think the torture tactics have gotten worse though

  • Not "technically" discontinued, but almost

    Buying products and owning them.

Buying products and getting full repair manuals and electrical schematics

    Cathode ray tubes

    Overbuilt refrigerators and washing machines

Clothes that last and are repairable

Houses built with full bricks and iron with actual straight walls and unbroken woodwork

  • I don't really get the idea of decentralized internet.

The internet is already decentralized. There are millions of websites hosted on thousands of separately-owned machines.

"Decentralized" services like the fediverse use thus exact same structure and bind them together by a search/aggregation API.

The "centralized" part of the internet is DNS/IP Assignments, Service providers, and search.

You are perfectly allowed to go your whole life without using search, or by self-hosting searX.

If we go back to the age of webrings, that is essentially decentralized internet. It seems like every decentralized internet idea is just a rehash of this with some Tor ideas sprinkled in.

You are never going to be able to pull a "Silicon Valley" and make every device into a mini server. The ping and uptime would be horrific.

  • This is what I need.

If you only need to drop files on the same LAN, then you really don't need a server. P2P is perfect and cuts out the middle man.

  • Joke
