They didn't take a risk. Taking a risk means preparing for situations and dealing with them as they come up, and what happens happens. This lady prepared nothing. This is more like resting in the shade of the anvil suspended by twine in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. She walked out into the woods to die and just didn't know it. It's an awful story, she obviously didn't feel she had options, but a little bit of reading or video would show a person very quickly that they needed more preparation than the deceased put in to have any hope it surviving an alpine winter.

Edit: specifically he was elected in hopes of doing things like this instead of hiding nuclear secrets in pool houses. It's a matter of priorities.

That does bring a smile to my face, but it crosses the line for cruel and unusual punishment.

So talking about it, getting it on the radar of our leaders, maybe allocating some resources, that's nothing-burger first step response?

The thing that confuses me about this wonderful concept is how did the Tamarians ever get to the point of building wooden ships if they only spoke in meme and metaphor? How could they have created a culture that speaks only in references if their references couldn't happen without culture existing to make note of the referenced events?

Any attempt at fixing things is just a whitewash job? Whatever. We might as well all march I to the sea, huh?

Weeellll tek-nik-uh-lee they might have built a town along the banks of a small river, dammed the valley blocking the river, and then filled in the old riverbed. But either way yeah those guys are dumb for staying there.

It's not voting for a lesser evil. It's a vote to keep democracy turned on. Once the democracy is turned off it's incredibly hard to turn back on again. One guy talks about invalidating elections due to imaginary fraud while selling state secrets. The other guy is just old but he likes it when people vote in elections for things. Is that the lesser of two evils? Kind of a silly phrase. Any two things, one will be more evil, and as nothing is perfect, the other will have less but still some evil. The lesser of two evils is an excuse to do nothing or in this case, scuttle any hope of doing better in the future.

You can do a lot of that in a transit. Transits are great, I love the extra cover of the back and almost bought one over my current Tacoma. Their are limits, though. For example, as a gardener, I use a lot of wood chip mulch. It's sold by the scoop from a front end loader they drop right in the bed of a truck. If I had a van, I'd either need to bring the trailer, which adds weight, fuel inefficiency, and maneuvering difficulty (parking). I could buy it bagged, but it costs twice as much, weighs more because the bags trap moisture, and now I have to schlep it around instead of shovelling it into a wagon and dumping it where I need it. It's just one use case, but I'm sure there are more. Also, I'm pretty sure a transit doesn't have the flex body of a cab-bed truck, so weight in the bed or towing is strain on the entire body, causing wear and tear. But I do wish most people had vans instead of trucks, where those vans are more efficient and safer than trucks of equivalent class.

You're right. For a while Russia might have been considered a "regular" capitalist society following the cold war, at least by popular opinion in the west, but they've driven further and further into kleptocracy and facism. Of course, facism can be wrapped in a capitalist or communist flag. One may be a better breeding ground for facism but it can root anywhere.

Now I disapprove of our car centric society as much as anyone, but there are definitely legitimate business reasons for a 150 sized pickup. I run a landscaping business and use a truck slightly smaller to haul my tools including a trailer with a riding mower (electric for whatever it's worth, and I'd rather convert the lawn to native meadow but I do what they pay for so I mows the grasses.) Carpenters and other tradespersons, except the really heavy stuff like masonry, would use a truck this size, and even ones who may prefer something bigger like stone and concrete guys may only be able to afford this, and it gets the job done. Could it be done with Kee trucks and sprinter vans? If the ranges weren't so wide. Here a tradesman might need to take themselves, their helper, and 2 people's worth of tools and supplies an hour away, daily. I wish we had trains, local supply depots, etc. But for the system that's been built already, for people who can't change it today but need to go to work today, there are good reasons for some of that size of truck. It's much smaller than most, though I do agree something smaller would be nice if viable.

I think it can be helpful as a first sentence, but it needs more. "By loving yourself, I mean treat yourself better. Get a style and work it. Work out occasionally. Eat better. Find a hobby. Find another. If you want somebody else to love you, you have to first take care of yourself or nobody will think you could take care of them. Secondly, you have to make yourself into a person that's interesting because anybody can be nice. You need more than nice. Third, having a life is how you meet people, and you gotta meet 'em before you can ask 'em out. That's why you have to love yourself first."

The double-edged anxiety for any given responsibility thing is an ADHD thing? Ah heck.
