  • I'd say you're looking for a word other than "minimalist". Maybe "modder" or "tweaker".

A minimalist doesn't necessarily have any interest in spending hours making their computer 0.01% faster.

  • This can depend on your personality type and self-discipline.

If you're a methodical introvert who likes reading, go for a vocab-focused app with spaced repetition, and continue by reading actual newspapers or books (even children's books) as soon as you can.

If you're an impulsive extrovert with a short concentration span, you're going to need a more human experience, if possible 1-to-1 tutoring.

In all cases, don't get hung up on grammar and (especially not) phonetics at the start. Vocab is the key that will unlock the rest.

FWIW I speak multiple languages fairly competently and I'm a qualified English teacher.

  • Fair enough. But whether this is a technical problem or a human problem, it is a problem. Silly for people to be denying that IMO.

If servers are going to come and go every 3 months at the whim of individuals, then - IMO - maybe there are are too many servers. Anecdotally, I picked my particular one for this very reason. Seems I anticipated well.

  • And others here are saying they never saw that. I didn't, and I subscribe to several communities on that instance. Maybe it's a technical issue but it's a problem.

PS: It's not my local instance, so I guess it's normal that I saw nothing. But this highlights a small design issue with the system: if you use Server 1 to view posts that are entirely on Server 2, you will be out of the loop about Server 2's news even tho it's effectively your home server.

  • I share your concerns. This was at the very least a failure of communication. Surely people could have been found to step up if only more of them had known in time. Hosting text-based content means some trouble and expense, yes, but the effort is anecdotal compared to video. This was an apparently thriving and successful server. It's not a good look for it to go belly-up like this, IMO.

  • Just read what I write, rather than what you think I might be trying to say.

I can't find it now but there was an analysis a few days ago by a reputable source, maybe in The Atlantic, which said basically what I just said. It's not scandalous. The guy has an impressive record as a business leader. Perhaps not as a product specialist, or even an engineer, but as force for making things happen at the company level.

Anyway, apparently there's not much willingness to engage in nuanced debate here so that's all I have to say.

  • as far as billionaires go he’s at least useful to humanity.

There's a good argument that this is still true (PS: in historical terms) despite everything. Without China the green-tech revolution would be decades behind schedule, and it took Tesla to make China move.

  • Even if it were 26% it would be somewhat irrelevant. Ordinary people do not use desktop computers any more. To repeat (because in this community there's a lot of stubborn resistance to this fact): ordinary people do not use desktop computers any more.

To be clear, I do, and you do. But we are a small and shrinking minority.
