  • Being a public utility increasing the rates needs to go through an approval process. My power company is…special. They currently have not one but two rate increases pending approval. In the mean time I literally have bills like:

    Usage: $37

    …(other fees that are basically standard)

    Balance fee*: $19

    Total: $112

    this fee is to balance to cost because the amount to provide power has increased.

    That certainly seems like a rate increase just with extra steps…I know that once the rate increases go through this ‘balance fee’ isn’t going anywhere either.
