I think I will put in a support ticket about it just for the hell of it. They have time for petty shit like this but still haven't fixed the automatic wipers that have been broken since August. Automatic wipers are actually a necessity in this car because the only way to operate them manually is with a few clicks on the touchscreen. It's dangerous. They kept closing my support requests for it until I gave them the number for the NHTSA complaint I filed. I'm so sick of this turd and his shitty companies.
This whole thing stinks. It’s the kind of lawsuit where you wish both parties could lose. The whole walled garden concept sucks, but this doesn’t exactly benefit consumers. Nobody wants a dozen different app stores where we need to set up accounts and payment info - not consumers and not small to medium size developers.
If Epic gets what they’re asking for it sure as hell won’t be what they want. Google still controls the OS so they can just make some shitty third party app store API with requirements just as onerous as IAP that puts everyone else at a disadvantage. If I’m Google, my new motto is “Android’s not done until Fortnite won’t run”.
Ok, maybe not that one.
Sam Rockwell is cast perfectly in just about everything. Phenomenal actor. Kinda surprised we don’t see him more.
They have put out good laser printers within the past several years. They probably still do. Those things are like tanks. You will replace every other piece of equipment - probably twice - before you have to do any real maintenance with one of those old laser printers. The one I have takes cheap third party toner cartridges. It’s got over 30k prints and I haven’t done anything but replace toner a couple times.
Their inkjet printers are horrible. Those things suck up so much ink that you spend more on that than you do the printer. You end up at the store looking at a $50 cartridge and a new printer right next to it for $60. Then you walk out with a new printer, in the hopes it might be better, before realizing you got fooled again about a 80 pages later.
Streets of Rage looks awesome. I’m also excited about Golden Axe. I spent so many hours playing that on Sega Genesis. I hope the remake turns out good.
On the surface, the biggest difference between distros will be the package manager and the update cadence. Most package managers are generally comparable so I won’t get into that. The cadence has to do with release type - rolling or fixed - and the speed with which updates are released. Do you want the newest packages, LTS or somewhere in the middle? This is probably the first big decision to make when choosing a distro. The only real must-have here is you want a distro that provides timely security updates. Even a highly stable LTS should be pushing out security updates asap.
Then you have default package choices, which are often superficial like DE or default apps. This can all be changed so it’s not much of a concern. But there could also be more impactful choices like whether a distro uses systemd or glibc vs musl. The mainstream distros tend to use systemd and glibc, which is generally good, but know that you have other options if your specific use case requires it. There’s also package availability, meaning the number of packages available in the repository, although this is less important than it used to be because you have options like Flatpak or Nix for getting packages that aren’t in your distro’s repository.
There are also some distros created with a specific use case in mind, such as Alpine for containers or Kali for testing network security.
Finally, you have structure and governance. Some distros have corporate backing, others are community supported and still others aren’t much more than a hobby. The ones with corporate backing typically have options for paid support. In general, you want something with stable and competent governance where it will continue to thrive even as team members change. You can find examples of this in corporate-backed distros as well as community distros.
So your biggest choices are going to be cadence, structure/governance, and whether you may need paid support now or in the future.
As for what distro developers actually do… First, they build the tooling and infrastructure to make their distro work - package manager, packaging tools, repository, etc. Then, they are responsible for packaging everything available in the distro. They are pulling in source code for all these apps, compiling it and putting binaries in the repository. They rebuild packages as required when there are updates to the source code. Some distros like Arch will build vanilla packages, meaning they don’t make changes to upstream code. Others may apply their own patches for various reasons. Some like Red Hat will provide patches to upstream apps requested by customers as part of their paid support services. So let’s say something isn’t working the way you need it for some random FOSS app included with the distro. You can put in a request and they will change it for you.
As for your specific question about simulating Ubuntu on Fedora, that is not possible. They each use their own distinct package manager and repository. They generally have similar packages, but they are not interchangeable. However, there are tools like distrobox and distros like VanillaOS that have mechanisms for using another distro’s packages. These use containers under the hood so it’s not quite the same as just installing .deb on Fedora or .rpm on Ubuntu.
Same here. I love Cyberpunk, but I just can’t get into Witcher 3 after attempting it a few times. It’s boring, the combat is shitty and I’m just not interested enough in the lore to deal with it. Not that the combat in Cyberpunk is great either. I guess I’m just more interested in that world.
Probably a mistake to reveal this info. After recovering the SIM, it may have been possible to go back and see the network traffic from the drone. That could create an opportunity to disrupt or hijack drone c&c in the future.
Just try it out and see how you like it. It’s been around as long as it has for a reason. And if you don’t like it, there are other fast moving distros. Fedora and Arch/Endeavour have similar packages.
I don’t think it’s necessarily about beating Windows. What is significant is that Linux use is slowly growing to a point where it shouldn’t be ignored. Those of us firmly in the Linux camp benefit from that and it makes it easier for newcomers to kick the tires.
Frankly, I don’t care whether people use Windows or not. Not my business, not my problem. Use what works. I’m just happy my own shit works, whether it’s 2% or 80% market share. Linux gaming has been a breeze lately - easier than I remember Windows being - and it’s awesome. We are in a really good place and I hope it keeps getting better.

Not sure why someone downvoted you. That’s exactly what the term means in this context. It’s those confidently written answers that contain false or fabricated information.

For starters, consider another distro if you want to make things easy on yourself. Alpine is probably a poor choice unless you have a reason to use it. I guess you could use it as a desktop if you really want to, but it’s more geared for containers and embedded devices. It uses musl instead of glibc so you will have problems running software that isn’t packaged for Alpine. The issue with Puppy is you will have a hard time getting help when you need it because it’s kind of a niche distro.
For your first time, you’re better off using something more mainstream. You are going to run into some issues and it’s a lot easier finding solutions for popular distros. Debian would be a fine choice because it’s widely used and runs great on older hardware. Beyond that, you could look at Ubuntu, Fedora, PopOS and Mint.
It gets so much worse after 40. I got tennis elbow and I have no idea how. I don’t even play tennis. It took months to heal. I couldn’t even carry a bag of groceries without intense pain. I got plantar fasciitis while jogging. I had to wear special sandals around the house until it finally healed. I tore my rotator cuff tripping and falling in the ocean. It’s just ridiculous how little things can result in injuries. Working out is a totally different experience now. Instead of pushing a little harder it’s about holding back to avoid injury. I can’t see shit anymore. I have to wear bifocals and crank the font size up on all my devices.
Maybe after 2 kids? Or around when I got married? It definitely wasn’t before my wife came along. If you ask her, she might say she’s still waiting. I don’t know. I still feel like a kid even though I have a lot of responsibilities and my body says otherwise.
Why wouldn't he have to pay? He already had to pay when he bought it. He put in cash and took on debt. The only real benefit to this thing tanking is he can take a massive capital loss and probably never pay income tax again.
The downside is he would owe a lot of money to people you don't want to owe and he looks like a bigger moron by the day. Sooner or later, Tesla investors are going to get spooked by his deranged behavior and then he's in a world of hurt. All his wealth is tied up in Tesla and he uses his position as CEO to pump the stock with all his bullshit lies. It's like a giant Ponzi scheme. As soon as the value comes back down to Earth and the stock is priced like a normal company he's in big trouble.
I don't plan to vote for her or any other Republican candidate. But there's going to be a candidate and I see her as the lesser of the evils. While I don't agree with her positions or particularly like her, I acknowledge that she is at least qualified to hold office and believe that she will leave after completing a term, which is more than I can say about the other candidates. We don't always get the candidate we want and that's part of democracy. It's ok to disagree on policy as long as we can agree on what it means to be Americans.
DeSantis is a hack and I do not believe he has demonstrated either good character or an ability to effectively govern. He relies on a Republican super-majority in the state legislature to ram his agenda through. Sooner or later you have to work with the opposing party to get things done and he has never had to do that. He can't expect a Republican super-majority if he's in the White House and I don't think he has the political chops to work with Congress. Hell, his former colleagues in Congress say he basically ghosted them once he became governor. He's also a racist asshole and hates LGBT people.
Ramaswamy is a hateful prick who is good at getting people riled up. That has nothing to do with governing. I don't believe he is qualified in any way, shape or form.
Trump is a traitor. His actions on 1/6 are an affront to every person who has ever worked to preserve or better our country or our way of life. He literally tried to deprive all Americans - even his own supporters - of a free and fair election. Ironically, many of his supporters consider themselves patriots who believe in free and fair elections. He has deprived them of their faith in our democratic systems as much as he has anyone else, and, in the process, has created an awful schism between Americans. I can't think of a worse criminal in our nation's history. It is unfathomable that he is considered a candidate for any public office. His rightful place should be on the gallows. His trials, eventual conviction, and imprisonment is a future far better than what he deserves.
Do you prefer Trump, DeSantis or Ramaswamy? There are no good candidates on the Republican side. Unfortunately, one of them is going to be the nominee and whoever it is has a decent chance of becoming president. As bad as she is, I don’t think she’s the worst Republican.
I bought drugs. It was super sketchy. It was very stupid but I was young. We were in a taxi driving who the fuck knows where. It wasn't even a road. We ended up in an alley in a ghetto where we bought the driest, shittiest Mexican dirt weed I've ever seen. We went to a strip club after that. The other person with me drank a little too much and got scammed by some girl. The night ended with the bouncers taking us to an ATM where he had to empty his account. In a separate incident, we were held up at gunpoint by some paramilitary guys in camo. I ended up getting really sick on that trip too. I went to a doctor who gave me a shot in the ass of something. It hurt like hell and didn't make me feel better. I had to come home early and get antibiotics. I would rate it a 0/10. In retrospect, I'm lucky I didn't end up kidnapped for ransom or dead. Not one of my finer moments.
