  • I like the clip, but IMO they basically bailed out in the end by all the nonsense quoted from the ~3:25 mark on.

Jeff basically makes it sound like the US used to be incredibly self-aware, humble, kind, and well-administrated, but I think what most Americans don't choose to understand is that since the very settling of the continent, it's been a highly fraught, contentious situation, much of it characterised by greed, cruelty, violence, intolerance and self-righteousness.

Now yes, from what I understand of history, under FDR we more or less hit a peak of being a well-run, progressive country, on the level of many modern Euro countries more or less, but most of that was specifically in response to the utter disaster of the Great Depression and the need to adjust powerfully, swiftly and accurately. Meanwhile, IIRC during his presidency, there was in fact a right-wing movement intending to remove him by underhanded means.

So I like the hopefulness of the clip, but in the end I also find it pretty typical of Americans being largely unwilling to understand the hows and whys of the nation, going back to the early 1600's.

Eh, sorry for the dang essay. :S

  • Just make a community. Build it, they will come.

This is exactly what I've done, but I must say that in the particular community's case, it hasn't been easy. We're going on 1.5yrs now, 900+ subscribers, and I've personally contributed ~360 posts (most of them curated mini-articles) out of 466 total posts, yet the sub still essentially needs me to provide the content.

So IME, niche-type subs can take a hell of a lot of work to take off, and we're not even that much of a niche.

  • Yeah, I get you...

One thing that totally kills me is how the US just screwed* with so many other nations over the years, mainly for profit, etc.

  • Now India and China are rising powers and you are going back to being a regular super-power.

NOT that I don't think you're mistaken, but at the same time, India & China are about as @(*&#-ed as it possibly comes when it comes to being considered 'super-powers.'

  • I've always thought Seasick, yet Still Docked was a lovely, low-key, underrated Morrissey song, full of malaise, yet also with a strange, infectious energy.

Also, there's a big, iconic song like this (maybe several) by Mazzy Star. Was it... Fade in to You?

  • Just out of curiosity, did you all name your cats "Momo" after Tibetan dumplings, because "Dumpling" seems like a really cute name for a pet.

    @TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works

  • Love you, Sunaurus! (altho that's kind of an American expression which perhaps... doesn't mix culture-wise very well in terms of where you're from, haha sweating*)

It’s been an honor to serve...

Myself, It's been a total* honor to be part of your excellent (incredibly carefully-run) instance. For my part, I've tried to bring positive light to lemm.ee specifically, and Lemmy as a whole, across the last 15+mos. So thank you SINCERELY* for giving me that chance, plus for expediently handling a couple of distressing issues that I barked about, here and there!

In terms of financial gratitude, it seemed like last time I tried, I wasn't able to get my PayPal to get y'all a donation (in retrospect I think I should have tried via GitHub?), but let me know if there's anything else (that or otherwise) I can do for you, please.

Also, via my occasional interactions with the new lead, I've had a quite satisfactory time interacting with @EllaSpiggins@lemm.ee, and I want to greatly thank Ella for that, too. ^

    Just... here it is:
thank you SO MUCH, you wonderful folks, you. ā¤ļø

  • Looking for comics/cartoons like The Far Side Gallery

If you mean The Far Side (I don't know what "Gallery" refers to), then there's been practically a cottage industry of such. Some that come to mind would be: Bizarro, Ballard Street, In the Bleachers, Off the Mark, Non Sequitur and there's no doubt a dozen+ more...

  • I know I can filter content. I know I can post and be the change I seek. Yet, it feels like an uphill battle.

It doesn't look like you mentioned subscriptions, which gets you out of the 'all' / 'filtering' side of things entirely. But just as with Reddit, you'll need to spend time building your personal feed over time and tweaking it.

The good news is that there's no limit to your subscriptions (unlike Reddit's cap of 50 displayed at any one time), but that you'll need to use the right tools to search the Fediverse to find those communities you want to subscribe to.

The main tool I typically use seems to have a bug right now (based on the recent software upgrade?) but I suspect will be back up in a few days. You might take a look at this, tho, plus other resources.

  • Block FlyingSquid

You mean the user that moderates some Star Trek stuff and Out of Context Comics? What's the problem.?

  • Americans are now considered morons (left and right leaning)

Why the left-leaning ones? Because we didn't do enough to prevent this catastrophe?

  • the language is bullshit
i don’t think it’s worth learning french for almost any reason

Personally I'm learning French because it's the language of bande dessinƩe, and in order to enjoy more BD, plus run my sublemmy more effectively, it's an obvious choice.

Anyway I find French much harder than Spanish, but am slowly getting the hang of it... I think. Gender is complete BS to me, and it seems like there are tonnes of little grammar rules to follow. Is that why you called it bullshit, yourself?

  • ...I have never heard another person say those things.

Haha, I can totally relate to someone making up expressions, then sticking with them. For example, a couple I made up for whatever reason, and still employ with a frequency:

    • Oh, rabbits! (expression of surprise, sometimes used as a mild curse)
    • Well, shut my mouth and spank my bottom! (surprised, Southern-style)
    • Smooch my ruby, red rump! (tauntingly, Bender of Futurama-style)

    .

EDIT: Oh, and my grandpĆØre used to loudly exclaim "Fiddlesticks!" when he was obviously angry or deeply annoyed. I've never heard that term used ever across old literature, films, etc.

EDIT2: Back when the TV series Deadwood was running, I remember someone online asking 'why are they swearing using completely modern terms?' and someone else answering 'because if the show used authentic curse words, the characters would all sound like variants of Yosemite Sam.'

I dunno, speaking as a Naked Gun / Zucker fan, I think I might have enjoyed that! :P

  • Just to sideways add-on: as we know, unhealthy stuff can sometimes be replaced and upgraded with something else. Let's take white rice. It so happens that there are other grains that are more nutritious and fibre-rich than even brown or wild rice. It also steps around the issue or rice naturally containing arsenic, which could be an issue for rice lovers. Substitutes might be things like barley and wheat berries.

Personally I've found steel-cut oats to be my very favorite rice replacement. Very nutritious, and I even prefer the flavor. They also naturally have a nice, calming quality, not unlike hops, valerian, skullcap, etc.

How to use? Well, SC oats can seamlessly replace rice 1:1 in soups & stews, no problemo. As a side dish, one will probably want to rinse them after cooking, as it can get a little slimey, a bit like sushi rice.

Yes, people seem to commonly associate "oats" with breakfast, but steel-cut oats are a different beast than rolled oats. They taste significantly different due to being whole, and less processed. Give it a try if you're daring, and I think you might be pleasantly surprised!

  • Unbelievable.
It's sort of the anti-Clinton, full of wonkish facts of the time, but like the coming admin, directed towards blame and hate.

Which too-often snags the common person in to a vague basket of 'yeah, we gotta get those guys!' sentiment.

  • Haha, it won't of course,
    but it's a nice gesture. :D

    Thanks for the honest reply!

  • Thanks for the reply, matey.
So, assuming I'm getting all that correctly, then you seem like you're prone to spinning-up some dark fun which suits you*, but not necessarily the object of the joke, necessarily.

TBH, I've struggled with that myself, many-a-time. Argh...

  • I’ve made a joke about someone killing themselves on both lemmy and Reddit.

How was that funny, if I may ask?
