We were thinking about a move to Spain soon and in years to come possibly renting out the home we buy and live in South America to be closer to family.

I imagine in this case , as a non EU resident despite being an EU citizen the tax would apply.

A corporate owned platform is not going to expose you to viewpoints that are against its interests. Lemmy is more inline with the actual state of the world as you are talking to other humans.

Sure at times we many not like what we hear but that is ok. We all need to hear other viewpoints, it is how we grow. Its not a personal attack and if you think about it being critical of a government is good, people should want their government held accountable and working for the people.

It is also not about red vs blue or any of the other bullshit labels . None of that matters, you are more like the average Russian than your leaders. Most people just want to get on with their lives with as little bullshit as possible. As for loyalty to the nation, I like Einstein's answer here.

I am from Europe and I am highly critical of the US as they are a bully, They are not some moral do-gooders that the movies paint them as. They have military bases all over the place and have meddled with so many countries. They are an empire.

As for the platform aspect, do you think Twitter or facebook and the rest have been a net positive for humanity ?

Sure there have been positives but there have been massive negatives such as

• the undermining of Democratic elections, brexit and trumps campaigns.
• things like xkeyscore where these companies in some cases collaborated with the NSA or if not the greed facilitated the collection of data.
• the algorithms that promote hate because it drives engagement, thus further driving a wedge in the fabric of society.
• we have seen governments pressure these companies to hand over data and they then arrest, torture or kill the users.
• things promoting US Interests are pushed such as the Arab spring but things against it such as occupy wall street or criticism of Israeli genocide is silenced or shadow banned.
• suicides from bullying

For the record I am critical of my own government too where it makes sense but they do not invade other countries.

I still eat them though now and again to vary my diet. 😄 (I can tolerate the bitterness from time to time)

Fair enough, I would have thought most things would be related to either hardware or software but I could be overlooking something. I was just trying to propose a sensible approach that could be a starting point.

As an engineer, I hate having to repeat the same thing again and again so take notes and make sure you understand them.

Secondly know the product or project intimately relative to your level. For example if I work on the project and I know it from the code and infrastructure and everything else in addition to how it works for the end user then the least I expect is that the person asking the questions has used the software with a demo account on UAT or something so that my answers will not go over their heads. Knowing the product will also allow you to talk to clients better and you will know what it can and can't do.

I'm ok with someone if I see they are willing to make the effort regardless of their level, if someone is coming to me to do their work for them , then I lose my patience fast and will very soon be less helpful and prioritize my actual work over their bs.

Finally as I said we are often overworked and not looking to have more things to do. We are the ones that have to stay late to fix someone's mess or get called to patch an emergency zero day in some software used by the company on a weekend. In addition we support everyone else as without us there is no product and no jobs for the rest of you. We are at the bottom of the pyramid holding the rest up with the CEO being the prick at the top.

Finally dont just engage when you need something, get to know them and see if you can help them with something. Maybe a heads up about a project or client to avoid or some thing.

It is good that you want to bridge the gap and I wish more in your position would do so.

+1 for an actual tech focused community. I think it has to be focused on software or hardware as a rule. News about stocks, CEOs, rebranding etc should not be allowed. Maybe put them in tech_news or something.

I want to read about what new feature the openbsd folks are working on or innovations by the quebes os team or a new RISC based laptop or the raspberry pi 420 that can play half life 3.
