  • She has to live with that every day of her life and is now doing what she can to save others that trauma, despite knowing that there will be dickheads who just want to pile on anyway. Have some humanity.

"Samuel didn't need to die and that's the guilt I carry every day with me," she said.

  • You know precisely nothing about their reasoning. Public opinion has no bearing. It was formed on the basis of police and media reports that may have led to the conviction of an innocent man. He's already had the death sentence lifted because the jury was rigged.

In the court filings this week, the Los Angeles Innocence Project said it was seeking evidence from the 2004 trial that it was unable to find among trial files from Peterson’s former counsel.

“In the course of LAIP’s review and after some preliminary investigation, it became apparent to me that numerous items referred to throughout the police reports in Mr Peterson’s case were not included in the discovery that was provided to the defense at the time of trial,” Paula Mitchell, director of the Los Angeles Innocence Project, said in the court filing.

It appears that there were failures of disclosure, and quite possibly an incompetent defence team. You don't need to have an opinion about this until they present their case.

  • If I get to ask them to bring something, I guess all the major world news and science media of the previous 50 years on a hard drive would come in handy. I'd use it to bankrupt all the billionionaires and bring peace and prosperity to the world.

  • How are you going to do collective anything when you've decided that almost everyone else is "stupid, passive and submissive"? Seriously. Do you think you're going to sneer your way to revolution? There are no structural barriers to emancipation, it's just too many individuals being a bit crap?

    Come the fuck on.

  • That's child abuse. But it's also an example of how strong beliefs in homeopathy can arise. With fluctuating conditions, people often seek a solution when symptoms (or the child's cries) are at their worst. When they get better soon after, it creates an illusion of effectiveness.

A similar illusion is at work with the MMR vaccine. Autism becomes diagnosable at around the same age as the first shot is given, creating a powerful impression that the two events are connected.

It's why we have randomised controlled trials. With no control arm for comparison, your friend has concluded that abusing their child is somehow useful.

  • This isn't exactly the same as the Martingale system (where you double the bet after a loss so that you end up winning the starting bet when your colour does finally come up) but it's the same principle, just messier because you're tripling so it's harder to analyse (but you'll go broke quicker).

In principle, you will usually end up making a small profit while risking very big losses. And that's why it doesn't work. Either you run out of money for the next bet or you reach the house limit (which will almost always exist).

If you go to a casino with an amount of money you are prepared to lose, it's not the worst strategy (given that there are no good strategies with roulette). You will usually get a small win but you will sometimes get a big loss. You'll end up down in the long run.
