  • All that it does is push homeless people out of the area. That is all that you are accomplishing. This will not force those who do not seek help, to seek help, it just pushes them out of sight. No matter what you say, this is the point, to push the homeless out of the area, they do not give a single fuck about getting them help. If they did, instead of making it so people couldn't lay down, or sit, in public, they would be putting far more money into mental health facilities, and other aspects of life that makes, and keeps, people homeless.

But no, just make it so they can't lay down in your area, that will make it better. It also makes life worse for people who are not homeless, especially the elderly, and disabled. This type of thinking also leads to the privatization of public spaces, reducing resources to everyone, that have a demonstrably positive affect on people. Part-and-parcel of hostile architecture initiatives are also legal punitive ones, to enforce the removal of unwanted people in areas that they can't specifically do something like put spikes on. The very morality behind "defensive" architecture is called into question, because of the line of thinking you put forward is little more than an excuse to push undesirables away from society.

There are more, if you would like, everything I have ever found on this subject has read "we can prove many negative aspects of doing, and there might be some good aspects, but it isn't as evident, and often can possibly be explained by other factors", so I don't even really see research backing up this idea you propose.

  • When I was homeless all the shelters were full, and housing was a year plus wait for anything. I often slept in a concrete tube under a bridge. Then the government came in, removed the tubes, and puts spikes all over the concrete under the bridge. Yes I felt it was an attack. I was forced to move further out from where I could attain help, and do something to sustain myself, only making it harder for me to exist. Dealing with the government to maintain my place of residence, and medical treatment, is a part time job, where I spend, literally, 4-6 hours on hold with places like Jobs and Family Services, and the local housing authority. I can absolutely understand how easy it would be for me to stay homeless if I were say, schizophrenic. Luckily I am not, and I can maintain things like schedules, keep dozens of appointments per month, etc.

This is one of the worst possible ways to encourage people to seek help. it shows a deep lack of understanding what day-to-day life is for the homeless, especially ones who are very mentally ill.

  • oh yeah, they watch for a lot of things. The reason I brought up the one I did was my one friend's son, who is now an adult, fell heavily into the red pill nonsense, and it caused serious problems. So other friends are particularly on the look for that. Most of the kids are now in the mid to late teens, and early 20s though, so they mostly leave them be now.

  • There are what we call OPOs, or organ procurement organizations. There are like 50, at least int he US. If you are in the US, and have certified skills that could help these, often you will receive scouting materials, you can also contact UNOS for information about ones local to you.

  • yeah, I have seen too many videos, made by, and probably posted by, IDF killers themselves where they commit horrible crimes, and nothing is done about it. Like a group walking down a street, nothing is happening, very few people there, and an IDF just shoots a child sitting on a porch. Saw a video, from what looked like security cameras, of a small scuffle that left people injured, when the ambulance showed up, surprise! It's the IDF, and they started shooting at everyone. This is just two things. I do not deny Hamas commit war crimes, however, this is no defense of what the IDF is doing.

  • I have read a number of things, over the years, discussing essentially this. They were always recalling historical movements to make their case, not so data driven. Thank you for the paper.

  • correct, and in those cases they saw that there was an important group within the movement they could have a diplomatic out with, and they decided to take it before it was all violence

  • The problem is that pageantry is all that it is. The other dictators that do this may say things like it is just a show of their patriotic pride, but it is, in reality, an indulgence, flexing their power, showing everyone when they jump, they better give me an amazing spectacle, not just jump. Also, behold our arms!

  • Yes, they leave out that the protests work because they are displays of very large amounts of people who, while peaceful now, they have reason to believe can become violent. Without being backed by the threat of violence, or seen as a diplomatic out to a movement that is, otherwise, violent, they don't really work.

  • That is "classic" bigotry, if you will. Systemic bigotry does not need these feelings, as you thoughts on the subject mean nothing to those who are the targets of the bigotry, as buying things that enrich their persecutors, and actively donating to those people ideologically, bears no significant difference to the persecuted, in any practical manner. Also, if it is something I can practically avoid, living in the world I was born into, then I do. Entertainment is like the poster child of things you can choose to avoid. Suggesting people live an impossibility does no good, but that is not what is happening with people telling people to drop JK Rowling's IP.

  • You know systemic bigotry needs not intent, or context, from the individual, right? You seem to be arguing that your personal lack of hatred towards a group, and lack of direct harm, means your actions can't be bigoted. And no, being forced to pay taxes is not the same as choosing to buy into something funding bigotry.
