  • The big problem is the state which has such extreme power.

The big part that makes those states work is default compliance, which allows that state to commit violence using everyone who complies (which is everyone by default). Individuals being non-compliant directly translates to power being syphoned away from the state. This is why morality and ethics education are so Important, as the state cannot do anything immoral if individuals refuse to do immoral actions. The second most important thing is transparency, since states utilize opacueness as a means to obfuscate the morality of actions. This is one reason why dense hierarchies are utilized in governments - to obfuscate actions and provide personal deniability to members of the state infrastructure.

  • You European? This meme's most likely referring to American Libertarianism, which is described by Ayn Rand and is actually Anarcho-capitalism. Think more 'Atlas Shrugged' than anarchism.

  • Could trump be our hoover/Reagan and Walz end up being our Roosevelt/Gore?

History rhymes, but I'm not saying we're gonna see ground breaking changes that bring the federal government back from the brink. Walz just seems like a possible candidate for garnering mass approval across the board and potentially unopposed enough to social programs to maybe implement some.

  • I mean, yes, that's how it would work if there were an infinite number of atoms in the piece. There's a finite amount, though, so eventually there will be a point when all the atoms have completely decayed.

All models are wrong, but some are useful.

  • I've heard certain clients or servers are able to spot crossposts and reposts, and mark them as crossposts/reposts. I definitely know that the app I use does not.

I think it's doable. It'd likely require hashing posts so that Lemmy apps can keep track of those hashes.

  • Which is why he prevented delayed a high speed train in the US. To my knowledge, they are still constructing it.

Just checked: it's still underway. 119 miles currently under construction. From Bakersfield to Madera, with most of the rail near Madera completed.

  • We can't really prove that MAD has worked without seeing what would have happened if we hadn't done MAD.

I'd argue that without MAD, the cold war might not have happened, which could have avoided a massive number of conflicts.

  • Careful with the noble savage fallacy. Europe was constantly ravaged by disease due to animal domestication, in ways the Americas were not. Many Native American civilizations created insane mathematical, ecological, and civil wonders during their existences. They 100% would have used double-blind studies if they had any major reason to advance medicine prior to Europeans bringing plagues.

  • The title is the punchline. Magnets move things with their fields, the magnet itself doesn't need to apply force on the things it moves. 'work' is a physics term for applying a force over a distance.

  • I think that spring still leaves ambiguity. A very thick, powerful spring like that in an ejection seat could probably get the bowling ball airborne, but wouldn't actually impart anywhere near the same amount of energy on the marble.

A small elastic band like that used in a slingshot on the other hand would have difficulty getting the bowling ball to fly at all but could turn the marble into a bullet.

  • A bowling ball imparted with the momentum from a slingshot won't even have the energy to stay air-borne.

The marble imparted with the momentum from a slingshot will fracture or even penetrate your skull.

Momentum is mv. However, kinetic energy is (1/2)mv^2, where the velocity is providing exponentially more to the equation.

  • That's fair, though I think we also should thank the use of Travelling Wave Tubes (TWTs or 'twits'). These little tubes of witchcraft amplify the transmission signal to make sure we can still hear, say, the Voyager 1 that's currently over 15-billion miles away.

  • I don't know what you mean by that. Violence is always an option, and is quite often a solution. It's never the optimal solution, but quite often a perfect solution does not exist. You're competing with violence - violence is the control, and if you can't come up with a solution better than it in time, people will opt for it.

  • You've missed what I'm talking about. As you see a drop in the amount of free time, you see people enjoying life less, and having poorer views on existence overall. It means having to choose between social life, hobbies, and other pursuits - the things we humans actually live for. Because of this, couples actively choose not to bring children into the world.

In Japan, Long hours are expected as a demonstration of work ethic. On top of that, workers are also expected to hang out with their coworkers after work.

China has been famous for having the '996' work culture, where the expectation is that you work from 9am to 9pm six days a week. Having worked a 12-hour shift for 5 years, you have little energy or time to do anything aside from rest. They're currently trying to end this culture, which would do the most help for their citizens finally having time to do more than just recouperate for their next work cycle.

The US is also starting to see a decline in birth rates. Everything we do here costs money and requires you to drive, which also costs money in fuel and vehicle maintenance. On top of that, we have not been seeing pay increases that keep up with inflation. More and more people are needing to work potentially 2-3 jobs to stay afloat. These are the conditions leading to many Americans choosing to not have children.

To summarize, if the only outcome for your child you see is being a wage slave, you are much less likely to want to bring a child into the world. If we want to see things change, every citizen of a country needs a significant increase in free time without having to sacrifice compensation that will still support them.

  • Yes, but the issues facing many countries with declining populations is the extreme lack of free time outside of work to actually pursue relationships and other forms of self-realization.

I am not stating that maternity benefits shouldn't be done, I'm saying that maternity benefits are not going to increase countries' declining populations. The issue is not just with taking care of the child, it's with everything before and after as well, and maternity benefits only impacts the portion during child rearing.
