  • Never said I don't. I know two railroad guys - one retired as soon as he possibly could to escape the hell outlined in the Vice article. The other was on the phone with work the entire night when we last had the chance to drive 4 states over to visit him. Never even got the chance to ask how he was doing but it was pretty obvious.

I'll take whatever wins we can get, but that should make us hungry for more.

  • The Computer Killers. It's pure 70s low budget British teen horror cheese. Don't read about it, just find it and watch it. You'll either love it or switch it off after 20 minutes, but I must preach this gospel.

  • When things happen you can either control the outcome or not. If you can, and things go sideways, you simply made the wrong decisions along the way and can learn. If you can't, find out what small parts you CAN influence and do your best to make things turn out okay. If you are totally powerless, remind yourself that nothing lasts forever and you can wait it out until an opportunity presents itself or the situation changes.

Sometimes you will find yourself in a ruinous situation beyond your control. Lower your standards until you have something you can act on - even if it's going to sleep to give your mind and body some rest. One step at a time, even if they're small steps and you're not quite sure where you'll end up. Find any positive you can. That said, allow yourself to get angry, sad, or anything else you need to feel to vent the stress - but afterward, find a positive and hold it.

Religious people have a built in community around their place of worship or shared interests. If something bad happens, the good people in that community will do what they can to offer support - this is usually mistaken for "god is great, look how he sent you to help." That's just silly (and rather insulting).

Atheists don't have that default support community, but hopefully we have friends and co-workers, people on our dart league, etc. who would jump at the chance to help out when things go sideways. Be social. Help others. Be part of a community of good people, regardless of their beliefs, and they can help steady you when life gets mean.

  • Moon is a slow burner but stick with it and try to avoid spoilers. It's SO GOOD.

  • Like many people have said: freezer.

We have a box of quart-sizes freezer zip bags. Whenever you make food, immediately separate half of what you made and freeze it. You can always thaw it later when you don't have time or energy to prepare food.

Dairy tends not to freeze well. Most other foods do. You can freeze pasta, rice, and bread easily, so make a bunch to mix in to future dishes, and if you can't get through a full loaf of bread before it spoils, freeze half the loaf as soon as you bring it home.

There are a lot of meal prep tips websites, and it sounds like you are inadvertently meal-prepping. See what tips they have for storing food.

  • You could have nonstandard shaped feet. I have had horribly uncomfortable footwear most of my life - turns out I need wide or double-wide sizes and taller mids (not the arch, but the corresponding top of the foot - the talus I think?).

You might have a local shoe store that offers custom fitting or measurements for work or sports footwear. Visit them and describe how your boots are uncomfortable. They can help figure out what features you need and which brands offer them.

Personally, I found Rockport chukkas to be perfect for me in the wide sizes. Very little break in time and decent quality (my current pair are 3 years of daily wear and going strong). That said, if you find a pair that work for you, but two and alternate wearing them to give them time to air out. They will last longer.

  • Same here. I still have two pair sandals and one pair shoes, all held together with ShoeGoo after separating.

  • Aren't neo-nazis just nazis? Why are we doubling the character count?

  • Why are mom's hands huge?

  • Yeah - it's like Labyrinth or the Goonies. If you didn't watch them during their heyday (or grow up with them), they're just weird and annoying. But for a huge audience they're a comfort-watch.

  • The Gandalara Cycle by Randall Garrett & Vicki Ann Heydron is a fun one (available digitally on Amazon). It's a product of its time (soft misogyny comes to mind) but I don't remember anything drastically awful. Escapist fantasy.

The worldbuilding is deft, the stakes ramp up from book to book, and the story unfolds nicely to the Big Reveal in the last book. It's a quick read. Plus: giant telepathic cats.

  • IIRC they did this with Crayon Shin-Chan since a bunch of that show's humour was based on cultural nuances and taboos that simply wouldn't translate outside of Japan.

  • I will agree only as far as it could be worse.

Kidding aside, it's just not my type of comedy - neither are The Office or Seinfeld if you'd like to use this fact to gauge my taste - but I can't deny the wide appeal of any of these shows.

  • Apologies It's been a lifetime of frustration and sometimes I lash out at people (and threads) who don't deserve it

  • Friends. It should have been cancelled right after the pilot.
