  • I like the recommend The Quantum Magician because it doesn't seem as popular as I think it should be. It's got so many things going for it. Great world building, great characters, an interesting plot and detailed explanations of interesting fictional science. Everything from large scale political drama to interpersonal drama and thought provoking philosophical dilemmas.

  • Pretty cool looking, but I'd need to know how sturdy it felt and what the keys were like before buying it. As a novelty alone I don't think it is worth it, but if it is also a good keyboard then I might even get one.

  • Time to uninstall and reinstall. That should do it. 👍

  • These ones were novels. It looks like Joss was only an editor for them.

  • There not being anymore Firefly is always sad whenever I think about it. I noticed there was a series of books when I was in the bookstore the other day. I have no idea if they are directly related or not. It must at least be in the same universe.

  • Nice, I've notice some weird behavior with this. Good to know they are already on it.

  • Most people I've talked to tend to disagree with me here, but my favorite type of book is one that focuses primarily on the fictional science rather than the characters. It's interesting how the main focus of most science fiction is not fictional science, but I suppose most people read stories to hear about the people in those stories. Personally, I don't care too much about how people think or what they want. I want to hear all about your wildest techno babble as others have called it. Anything that is fascinating to ponder, but of course the more it makes some type of sense the better. Characters to me are more like a necessity to move a story forward and to see it from a perspective that makes sense. They are simply a camera lens into the world I want to hear about.

  • I finished Red Rising, but it seems like the vast majority of it was kind of fantasy-like, but in an over arching science fiction setting due to the nature of the plot. Does that ever change in the following books? As in, does it get more science fiction like? Perhaps with more advanced tech or anything to do with space?

  • It is a steelcase series 1. Best chair I've ever had. The back can recline without the seat bottom moving. The arm wrests can move in any direction or angle. The material is comfortable and doesn't get sweaty.

  • There are only feeds for Subscribed, Local and All. Things can only show up there is they fall under one of those categories. Then the secondary filter determines the order. New is going to be chronological, Hot is some formula of votes per hour, active is some formula of comments per hour, old is probably reverse chronologically. etc..

It won't ever factor in what you visit and engage with on its own.

  • The intent was to be science fiction without the fantasy or horror. Some things are going to be a mixed bag of these elements so it didn't make sense to be so restrictive as not everyone is going to care about the nuanced differences between them. So if there is a spectrum from the maximum science fiction to maximum fantasy then we should be leaning into the science fiction side of that.

Personally I don't think Lemmy is big enough with enough traffic to start worrying about gate keeping. So unless someone is trying to suggest something like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones is science fiction I would let it slide. For now our rules are going to be a bit fuzzy until things develop more naturally.

I'll change the text to "science fiction" just to avoid any potential confusion.

  • I have an idea, but it is a bit complicated. Basically in a month from now I am going to find the 10 most popular science fiction books from the august "What are you Reading" post and make a poll for a community book club. We will vote on which of these 10 books will be the book of the month to read in September.

As for BookWyrm I think what I'll do is make a ScienceFiction community account and then the Reading and Read books on that account will be the books from the book club we voted on. Also that account will follow everyone here in the community that posts their BookWyrm account so you can find other members.

I suppose I could even start this now for August.

  • I recently switched from gmail to protonmail. I might start paying for the cheapest subscription at some point once I fully migrate over. The mobile app is really sleek and I think it is better than gmails mobile app.

  • Would this be considered counterfeit money and thus illegal?

  • Where did you acquire an Asimov collection, what do they look like and how much were they? This sounds like a set I would be interested in.

  • I wish more audiobooks would use a full cast. It's a really fun way to listen to a book.

  • I played Destiny 2 when it came out, but then they kept releasing more and more DLC and expansions I didn't feel like buying for how little content there was. My plan was to simply wait until the entirety of the game was released so I could buy the rest of everything in a single purchase and play it all.

I think I heard recently they have been actually removing old content so this plan no longer makes sense.

  • I wonder if the numbers were exaggerated. I find it hard to believe they counted the bodies accurately.

  • I recently read the Final Architecture trilogy and it might be one of my all time favorites now. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is a fan of space opera.
