  • Of course this is a good thing, but there are still serious negative consequences to a reducing population, which must be mitigated. Primarily, old people who are past working age are an expensive population to maintain. When there are as many or more old people as there are young, the burden is too heavy for young people to bear. And I say this as a 70 year old. Young people today CANNOT hit old age without their own substantial retirement resources.

  • The summary, yup:

The reality is that we have the tools to create a much better, richer society for everyone. But the people at the top would prefer a worse, poorer country, if that’s what’s required for them to stay completely in charge.

  • I agree about a German or Polish item; such a good chance for a bit of international flair. I don't know anything about Poland, but I spent time in Germany a long time ago. My mind went to cuckoo clocks for fun, and other fine and classy looking clocks (I brought home a chime clock that I loved). Could be towels embroidered in a traditionally Polish way. Or a set of Polish or German stemware.

  • New word to me, thank you. And apparently, in animals which display that behavior, it is reflexive, not a voluntary action. But a point of interest from your article:

Lordosis behavior is non-functional in humans, although lordosis-like positions can be observed in those being mounted from behind.

So therefore, while twerking mimics lordosis, it's really just dancing, albeit rather sexually.

  • This story includes detailed descriptions of sexual assaults.

And the first detailed description is well above the warning, as soon as you click the link. Disturbing, and clickbaity journalism frankly. Propublica should have more respect for their readers.

And yes, what the article describes is beyond horrendous, there needs to be an outcry.

  • Reminds me of the old adage about women, which applies equally to Black Americans (meaning it applies doubly to her). She has to be twice as good to be considered half as good. You KNOW Fani Willis has the skills!!

  • Being touch starved is a real thing. I can't believe I'm going to suggest this, but maybe talk with your therapist about whether it might benefit you to see a sex worker? I've known a couple men who were touch starved (not just sex starved) who benefitted from regular visits with a sex worker. Other than that, good regular massage could help. For both of those, seeing the same person over time seems like the best idea, even though it's not a romantic relationship. Also a dog, one who likes to cuddle and needs to be exercised daily, could improve your life.

  • an older fixture like that....My home was built in the late 90’s.

Somehow I don't think you meant 1890's. As someone born in 1954, it's really hard to realize that things which were built long after I became an adult are, nonetheless, now considered "older". sigh

  • To me, a downvote on a posted article suggests it doesn't belong where it was posted, or the article is itself bogus, something along those lines. But (again, in my opinion) comments are fair game for downvotes if you disagree, and I will also do so if I disagree vehemently. But if you don't want to actually add something to the discussion, no vote is really needed. Maybe you ultimately disagree with a post or comment, but it gave you something to think about? If so, the comment contributed positively to the discussion.

  • I have an extra left wing sister in law. Around here she would likely be called a tankie. She regularly posts memes about how awful war is and how everyone should refuse to go and then there would be no war. She especially makes those posts when Ukraine goes on the offence (even in its own country). Oddly though, she NEVER makes those posts in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine.

  • can quickly turn to: ‘wait, I thought you guys were serious about mailing them bombs…’

I really think it should be assumed that a good number of those posting about making bombs (or any number of other acts of violence) are, indeed, trying to incite people to do such things. It's not all innocent venting being mistaken for calls to action.
