  • Nope, no rephrasing. That’s literally what the double jeopardy rule is about. The government gets a monopoly on violence, and we expect them to use that monopoly only within certain limits. Without those limits you get authoritarian dictatorships and really scary stuff such as found in the Catholic/Protestant wars in England’s history.

An example of how rephrasing is not allowed:

A number of years back, there was some outrage over a case where a rapist got off “on a technicality” that was headlined in various places as “the judge ruled it wasn’t rape because the severely mentally disabled victim could have objected”. The real issue was that the prosecutor decided, as a strategy to get more jail time for the guy, that they would charge him under a law against raping an unconscious person, but the truth was that the victim was not unconscious. The government is only allowed one shot at trying you for a crime though. If the prosecutor applies the wrong law, they don’t get a do over. The guy absolutely was a disgusting rapist, but he didn’t rape an unconscious person in this instance, and so he gets off scot free.

It’s vitally important that a prosecutor applies exactly the right words, because they are only allowed one shot. If a not-guilty verdict comes back for any reason, including for technicalities, that’s it. Not guilty (for that crime) forever.

  • Her version of “Creep” is actually my least favorite, because I feel she really needed to do more with the lyrics. “Weirdo” makes no sense in an old-fashioned sense, as “weird” means “fate”, often “ultimate fate” as in “your death”, but also in the sense of “prophet” or “fortune teller”. I am creep, I am… fated to die? I am a reader of entrails? I am… what? I don’t get it. These don’t mesh at all with the song.

That’s not to say I don’t like her music. I do! I’m a huge fan! My favorite is actually “Pumped Up Kicks” for doing exactly what I said “Creep” doesn’t do and translating a school shooter into a Welsh archer defending against an English invasion force… “I doth gaze upon the fyrd and I maketh a plan” where “fyrd” is an Anglo-Saxon army. It’s brilliant.

  • That’s totally fair. As I said, there’s no real way to get into destiny now and understand what’s going on. No way for old players to return, or new players to come in and get caught up. By no means am I saying that’s a good thing.

  • Again, the new content is not dogshit. I get that you don’t appreciate it, but it’s simply not dogshit. And more than a fair bit of what went away? That was dogshit. The black armory? The infinite forest, heck, the whole Osiris expansion? No, it was not good. I’ll miss mars and the warmind stuff, but you have to admit there wasn’t a lot to do there. Forsaken? You can still access. That’s fantastic stuff. Beyond Light? That was loads of fun, still good, still accessible. Witch Queen? Wonderful. Lightfall? Well, the main campaign fell a little flat, but again, contains a lot of great content besides the campaign.

I understand being upset you can’t play the old stuff, like I can play old NES games… but it’s not a single player game. I can’t play Unreal Tournament 99 anymore either, and that sucks too, and there’s no real replacement for it either.

Yeah, you’re not buying something you get to own. I get wanting to own it, and you don’t. Here, you are buying access to what is available. But what is available is still fun. And that’s why people still play it. Objectively, why more people are actively playing it than ever have before— granted that I don’t understand how they can comprehend the story, jumping in late like this.

  • Well, yes. You do have to keep buying it yearly to actually get anything out of it. It’s not that different from buying fifa every year though.

I also dispute that the disappeared content was the only good content. The new raids and dungeons are pretty darn fantastic. Ghosts of the Deep is a ton of fun, as is Root of Nightmares. The secret exotic quest in the deep dive was comparable to the whisper of the worm secret quest, and even if the exotic doesn’t quite compare, exotics have been adjusted before to be usable, so whatever.

The rebalancing of the nightfalls has been amazing. Grandmasters are hard as balls and feel great to complete, and if that’s too hard for you, there’s multiple difficulties below that, and you’re bound to find one that stretches your skill at the game.

Legend and master lost sectors are another great addition that d1 never had, not to mention just lost sectors in general.

The crafting system is amazing and very welcome.

  • Regardless of the backlash about this message from the devs, the game is still fun, has tons of content, and if you’ve been following the story for years, a good and engaging story. (Alas, there’s no real good way to catch up on the story at this point if you haven’t been following it…)

  • Anyone remember a pinball game for windows that had three tables and I think the ball could swap between them during play, and the theme was building a space colony on mars or some other planet? Sorry my description is vague, but I was like 8 years old when I played it. I definitely remember that the tables were wider than they were tall, unusual for a pinball game, as it was designed for the computer screen not an arcade.

  • Step one: ask what the person’s use case is, then match it. It’s a standard interview trap to present this “sell this pen” thing as a test where the “potential customer” needs to prop up their window or poke a hole in a balloon or something stupid like that, just so they can turn down the people who hype up the writing capabilities. Always ask what they need first.

  • I want to add that all sexual content needs consent. Throwing sex into a game I’m running or playing in includes me in your sexual exploration, and if I’m not comfortable with that (and I’m not) then that’s not okay. And it’s also okay to not be okay with it.
