  • Decolonization can be done peacefully.

50 years ago you might have had a chance to make it happen, since most Israeli people would have been born elsewhere. Now you have multiple generations of people born and raised in Israel. They have nowhere else to go.

And you'll have to forgive me for being skeptical about a Muslim majority Palestine being tolerant of religious differences if they regained control of the whole area.

  • Where's the Rhinoceros Party when you need them? There's no chance in hell that riding flips for the Liberals, and likely not for the NDP, but an independent running on a platform of "hear me out, this will be hilarious" just might stand a chance.

  • I am curious what they are going to do for a leader. Are they going to double down on the right-wing populist bullishit, or are they going to find someone reasonable.

Also, poor PP is going to have to find himself a real job now.

  • It was a strategy that made a half-assed amount of sense during the years where the Liberals were struggling. Canadians (particularly Ontario) seems to like their politics roughly center. So if you want to supplant the Liberals as the main party representing the Left, you can't be too far left. Same thing happens to the Conservatives. Every time they drift too far right to appease the Alberta crowd, they start losing the Ontario suburbs.

Plus, "socialism" is still a bad word for most of the older population. You can get rid of the word, change none of the policies, and that will be enough to keep the "socialism bad" crowd happy.

  • It will be hard due to internal Conservative party politics, but there's nothing saying that the party leader has to have a seat in parliament. That's how Carney was prime minister without having a seat.

  • I don't think you can in good faith compare...

Ooh, that's just one of my pet peeves. Such a stupid fucking phrase. The only way to know if you "can't compare" two things is to do a comparison between them and come to the conclusion that the two things are very different. I can compare self checkout to a kumquat if I want to.

Now for some actually useful conversation, let's compare number of steps for vending machine vs self checkout (since that's the closer of my two examples).

    Vending machine:

    • insert payment
    • push button to select items
    • pick up item
    • repeat all steps until you have the number of items desired

    Self checkout:

    • scan item or place item on scanner/scale and push buttons for item type. This only counts as one step, because you are never doing both to the same item
    • repeat first step until you have all items desired
    • insert payment
    • pick up items

It's the same steps in a different order.

  • From what I've seen, the slower average time is made up for by having more of the stations. Depending on arrangement, you can fit three self checkouts in the same area as one traditional checkout. In my experience, the self checkout line is always moving faster overall.

  • I'm also not an employee of the vending machine company. I'm also not an employee of the gas station.

I don't really see what added value a cashier checking out my items for me has.
