  • I think the argument is that there wasn't any movement to take control of Hong Kong and replace its basically independent government for years. Until there was.

Same with the whole China Sea expansion. Circumstances can change on a dime and the optimal outcome is if nothing happens.

  • I still maintain that YT Premium is a great service if you're like a lot of people and YT is the majority of your online video consumption. From a price to use comparison standpoint, it's unbeaten. Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, etc all pale in comparison.

But their insistence on bumping up prices, bundling YT Music and their war on ad blockers now is making it really hard to try to keep it. Hopefully now that Google is trying to cash in, we get some real competitors. Because right now when it comes to the sheer amount of content, visual quality and reliability of streaming nothing compares.

  • I think it has gotten worse in that now we have higher bandwidth, faster computers, and more advanced web standards so ads can be an even higher level annoying. If we had the same type of ads back in the 90s that we have today, they would never load and if they tried to they would bring your computer to its knees.

  • Back in the day WIndows didn't even have the capability to deal with ZIPs natively. Even if its time was brief (which I honestly don't remember, I think that it was useful for years, almost up to Vista's time) it was useful.

And I do think it generous that this paid software just let you use it after clicking a button with no time limit. Time gave us better options, but I think a lot of people look at WinRAR harsher than it deserves.

  • Charging specs are fairly complicated so it is hard to say. Even if your Android phone for example supports faster charging than the iPhone (not hard, the iPhone is one of the slowest charging flagship devices around), it may not support that specific Power Delivery standard. My iPhone for example supports 15W wireless charging. Even though I had a few chargers that supported 15W charging, the iPhone uses a specific PD profile for that and I needed to buy a new charger that supported it to make sure I got the full speed.

So basically without knowing what charger, what specific Android and what specific iPhone you're using, it is impossible to say. I find it unlikely that the charger itself knows it is connected to an iPhone, let alone would it prioritize it.

  • Sound wisdom for both the husband and wife. Obviously the grandmother has her own experiences that make that good advice for a woman, but I think it’s good for everyone.

Have a joint account where you pay for shared expenses, and then your own separate account for yourself. For probably the majority of relationships now, both parties are (or at least should) be working anyway.

  • I’m just glad that so far my job has held at 2 days in office. It still sucks and I’m way less productive in office than I was when I was WFH full time, but it could be worse.

I think this issue does reflect on bad management. They don’t know how to monitor their team’s output, justify their existence or curb bad employees without being in the same room. That’s on them, not WFH.

  • Last year I remember seeing some stories about GS’s issues being caused by people defaulting on the card. It isn’t hard to get approved, so if you have even a middling credit score you can get the credit card. So at first it made sense that a bunch of people who probably shouldn’t have been approved for a credit card got one and got in over their heads.

That being said, the idea of people just not paying interest makes more sense to me. The Apple Card is probably the easiest card to see how much your balance impacts the interest paid. I’ve had the card since it came out and have never paid a dime of interest. I also only use it with Apple Pay meaning at minimum I get 2% cash back. Add to that, the savings account where I get 4.15% every month year. Again, with no fees or interest. I can see that hitting their bottom line.

I’ll play the world’s smallest violin for them. I only hope if GS does offload the program to someone else the terms don’t get worse. Because it has only been upside for me since it launched.

EDIT: Clarified the interest is 4.15% a year, not a month.

  • There isn't a solution where there wasn't going to be a shutdown. The only option is for Dems to just grit their teeth and hope the collective pain and chaos it causes forces the GOP to end it quickly.

After McCarthy passed the CR, it was done.

  • It's common, but probably shouldn't be for these right wing grifters. Or just grifters in general. If you know someone is trying to start some idealogical bullshit in order to satisfy a personal grievance, you can just kind of assume that you're not getting paid.

  • Putin won’t use nuclear weapons and he can’t realistically escalate the war.

That's a huge bet to make. The whole point of nuclear deterrence is so nuclear powers don't think to directly engage each other in any serious way. No one is anxious to call a nuclear bluff, especially since this is basically win or die for Putin.
