  • I have a friend who saw one of these and said "ah that's one of those joke pictures where everyone says they can see a word even when there's no word." and that's when he found out he was colour blind.

  • Hank Green actually posted a video relevant to this yesterday. He was reading a Fox News article about a machine that can turn C02 into fuel that an internal combustion engine can use.

He then scrolled to the comments and saw all the posts talking about climate change being a hoax. He says it would be very easy to assume the average Fox News reader is a climate change denier. If you were to ask him how many people in the US deny climate change is real, he'd guess around 50%. However, surveys have consistently shown it is less than 10%. It is a minority of people. His point was that people leaving stupid comments are not the average person, they're just really vocal, and try not to assume stupid comments are reflective of the average person's beliefs.

  • Gaben said it best when he said "piracy is a service issue, not a price issue." There is no other company that even comes close to matching Steam's services, both to consumers and developers. The industry could become a different place when he dies. I don't see any other CEO continuing to spend money to innovate and expand services rather than offer less and charge more to extract record profits.

  • Related news is the authors of Dave the Diver having to explain that they are in no way an independent studio

To save people from looking it up: The studio that made Dave the Diver is traded on the Tokyo stock exchange, has 7,000 employees, and brings in $2 billion USD per year.

  • In games like Poker, a player can have an advantage over others at the table by having a higher chip count than everyone else. It's a common scam for two people to pretend not to know each other and then have one "feed" all their chips to their friend by purposefully losing to them. Their friend can then press their advantage for an easy win and the two split their winnings. The power of friendship!

  • Frostpunk

I get it. I like city builders too and the idea of a game that's constantly threatening your city with crisis seemed interesting, but every run seems to be the same.

    Outer Wilds

Alright, you and I are gonna fight now.

  • Good idea. This is probably to stop new Linux users from panicking when they buy a new game and then Steam gives them the "this game is incompatible with your operating system" error when they launch without enabling Proton first. I know that message popped up for me a lot.

  • It's a 3% tax on tech companies. Carney did not agree to be a vassal state. He cancelled a would be tax that Trudeau said would take effect today in an attempt to sign a trade deal with the US, something the US agreed to negotiate before end of July. If there's no deal by then he could always move forward with the tax.

  • I'm not sure pissing off bullies leads to fair deals either. I'm thinking Carney isn't trying to get a good deal, but to avoid a trade war. Hell, Trump could order air strikes on Canada. He did it with Iran. Probably best not to piss him off. $2 billion in tax would be great but the government can also just print $2 billion if they really wanted to.

  • I don't like it either, but stroking Trump's ego and not doing anything to set him off is probably a better strategy than telling him to go fuck himself. Although I really really hope it works out. If Carney doesn't get a win the Liberals are going to be replaced real quick.

  • I absolutely hate always online DRM in single player games, so I get it. Personally, I'll avoid games that use it. I was a huge fan of the Hitman series but haven't played any of the new ones because of always online, live service, season pass, model they decided to go with. It's a deal breaker for me, but I understand it isn't for everyone else. I told my friends I wouldn't be playing Helldivers 2 with them because of its use of kernel level anti-cheat and they just gave me a weird look.

I'll choose to support games that are developed in consumer friendly ways, but I also accept that not everyone sees it as a big deal. If a company decides they need kernel level anti-cheat, then that's on them. They won't get my money, but I'm not about to start a petition to legally ban the use of kernel level anti-cheat and call anyone who won't sign it an industry shill and bootlicker.

Want to stop games you buy from being killed? Don't buy games that can be. Does this mean you'll be sitting out while all your friends have fun playing the latest hit game? Probably. Does it mean 10 years later when the game no longer works you can smugly tell them "heh, looks like you guys got scammed." Also yes. Just don't be surprised that they think you're weird.
