  • Last Week Tonight has an episode on food delivery apps. They talk about how these apps don't seem to help anyone. The customer pays more than before, the restaurant loses money, the delivery drivers lose money, and the app loses money.

The general idea seems to be that venture capitalists believe they can change the way the system works so that everyone eventually relies on an app to order food. Once ordering food without using an app becomes impossible, they can charge whatever they want and make a killing.

  • I said bond but I didn't mean to imply it actually binds people. If two people work at the same place they also have a bond, but that doesn't mean they get along. Unlike coworkers, family can't really become not family, but again it doesn't mean they get along.

The only reason OP wants to talk to someone who shares none of their interests is because that someone is family. There is no reason they'd talk otherwise. I was trying to say they need to have a reason to talk besides being related.

  • I recently got into a mutually uncivil argument

This is probably the test I see moderators fail the most. I've seen so many instances of users getting into flame wars and then a mod comes in only to remove/ban one side.

If one user says "I love Trump! Fuck everyone who doesn't!" and then someone responds "Fuck you! You're a fucking idiot if you love Trump!" and only the first comment gets removed for being uncivil, I think less of the mod. The mod didn't apply the rules fairly. They just removed the comment they didn't agree with.

I use that example because, if the mod removed the second comment but left the first, then people would be posting the modlog to !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com as an example of terrible moderation. I think even users can be biased towards moderator actions they agree with even if they're not fair.

  • Good on you for recognizing the difference and trying your best, but some people are just different. If you met a guy like your son somewhere else in your life, would you hang out with them? Probably not. The bond keeping you and your son together is that you're family.

I don't dislike my parents, but the only reason I talk to them is because they regularly invite me over for supper. If they didn't do that we'd probably never talk. That seems to scare the hell out of them, so regular suppers is what they've decided on. I have a friend who is really into board games. His parents decided they'd have regular game nights where they get together to play one of his board games.

Your son will eventually become independent and you'll need to have a reason to keep in touch. He's probably not going to take up woodworking so you'll have to find some other reason to get together.

Side note! I'm an anime k-pop guy and my father is a woodworking police officer. We don't see current events or politics the same way, but we don't argue! I'm not afraid to express my true thoughts to my father because I know he's not going to get upset. If you do want to talk about your son's interests with him, then do so with an open mind. Maybe he likes these things because he sees the world differently than you and he might not want to express himself if he's worried you'll argue.

  • I always like articles saying this is unprecedented for South Korea, a country which has experienced a revolving door of coups and military dictatorships since it's creation up until 1997 when it had its first peaceful transition of power in history.

  • You hear the one about the COBOL programer? In 1999 many people were worried about a bug with dates that could crash their systems. Unfortunately, a lot of really important systems were still using the outdated COBOL programing language. A search was done to find someone who could fix these systems. The last programmer who knew COBOL was found and they made a lot of money fixing up these systems. So much money that, once they received a cancer diagnosis, they cyrogenically froze themselves hoping that a cure for their disease would be found in the future. The programmer is awoken one day in a lab filled with high tech robotics. A person who is seemingly half machine themseves stands before them. The programmer asks "Have you found a cure for my disease?". The person replies "We have cured all diseases. You are the COBOL programmer, correct?" "That's right" "Great! It is the year 9999 and we have a problem we need your help with."

  • Yeah it sounded like bullshit to me since humans are so energy efficient we can hunt by running after animals until they're exhausted. Seems like it's from this 2000 study published in Nature.

Penguins use twice as much calories moving around on land as other similar sized land animals. It was thought this was due to them being more adapted to swimming which resulted in them waddling when they walked on land which was inefficient.

Turns out that thought was only half true. They use more energy to get around on land because they're not adapted to walking, but waddling isn't the cause. Waddling is actually more energy efficient, for the speed penguins move at. The research suggested the excess energy use is due to the muscle fibers in their legs. Their short legs require powerful, but inefficient, muscles to support their large bodies. The waddling might actually be a way to cut down on their energy use while on land.

  • OP also made this post yesterday in this community which was just a screenshot of this comment they made replying to the user they're arguing with but this time their username was coloured out and changed to "a weird subset of people".

OP is just posting their arguments with another user.

  • The OP has recently spent some time arguing with another user. The commentary by the OP is this comment by them except they changed the username to "the person on the left".

Nobody is a terrible person. I just think it's hypocritical to say making posts like this isn't the exact type of behaviour the server admins have requested users not engage in.

  • You literally made a meme calling out a specific user. The meme explains that if you see a user behaving in a way you don't like to just report, ignore, and let the mods handle it instead of issuing vigilante justice.

Would you consider this post ignoring the user you don't like and letting the mods handle things or would it be vigilante justice?

  • Describing economic and political systems is tough because people have different interpretations of them and they can all be correct. Denmark and the US are both capitalist but their systems are incredibly different.

The simplest description that applies to all forms of communism but not to systems that aren't communist, is that the means of production (typically defined as land and capital) are state owned (with the intention that their use is decided democratically by the public).

Other descriptions could also apply but they're also not required. Like how a watch is still a watch whether or not it has a hand to indicate seconds.
