Yes, I tried it around 2002/2003, back when the recommended way was from stage1. I think I had a P4 with HT. It was noticeably faster than redhat or mandrake (yes, I was distro hopping a lot). Emerge gnome-mono was a night run. Openoffice about 24hrs.

Fun fact (not really), when docker-compose throws an error on a yaml file it tells on which line the error is. The problem is that it ignores any commented out line, so you end up guesstimating on which line the error is
It depends A LOT what kind of IT career you do. If you are a sysadmin with a shitty manager/company you'll hate it. If you do helpdesk you'll hate the whole human race.
But you can become devops, SRE, cloud engineer, architect, so you get all the fun at tinkering without the bullshit (most of the time, no job is perfect).
