  • From my understanding there is not really one correct way too transliterate from Cyrillic to Latin script. Its more about making it make sense phonetically.
Zelensky or Zelenskyy would both be correct

  • It's absolutely infuriating and flat-out an insult that Ukraine and Europe would not be allowed a seat at the negotiation table.

Ukraine not being allowed to decide about their own fate is ridiculous at best.
And Europe was just as much a partner in aiding Ukraine as America was, if not more.

All I can say is that this whole thing reminds me a lot of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact

  • I agree with the sentiment, but I don't think a military alliance with Russia is even on the table. That'd be replacing one abusive "ally" with another.
Just because America is suddenly untrustworthy and a risk, doesn't mean that Russia isn't a threat anymore.

Imo, Europe is better off forging its own path, only collaborating with countries such as China when it is in our strategic interest to do so.

  • Welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay.

I've been here for 1.5 years now, ever since the previous Reddit exodus.
Its not as big, so finding a niche community is a bit tricky sometimes. But overall I find this place quite cozy.

One recommendation I tend to give to newbies is to ignore the .ml instances. They claim to be Marxist-Leninists and the moderation there tends to be iffy at best.

Other than that using this place has been smooth sailing for me.

  • Hitler was very vocal of his disdain for democracy, and he ran on that platform afaik.
The democratic Weimar Republic was what ruined Germany in his view.

  • And Americans are seemingly too cowardly to do anything about it.
For the love of God defend your democracy. Protest!

  • Imo it's already difficult enough to convince friends and family to use Signal. Delta Chat would be even more difficult to pull off.

  • It is indeed nice to ban cruise ships in a fight against over-tourism and pollution

    ...

    I'll let myself out.

  • The set-up process

Currently, unless you are already familiar with Docker etc, you run headfirst into a brick wall when trying to set up a PeerTube instance.
Until that process is easier to follow and understand, there won't be widespread adoption

  • Personally I stopped using Facebook years ago, but I kept the account around for my grandma's sake.
She has since stopped using the computer all together, so I took that opportunity to finally delete my account.

I do still use Whatsapp though.. I would prefer if I didn't have to use it, but there is no real way around it in the Netherlands.

  • I suspect it's one of those topics he likes to drum up if he needs to distract from something else.
(My suspicion is that this other topic is the walking back on campaign promises on immigration with the H1B visa thing)

That doesn't mean it's not still harmful. This stuff does harm relations with America's European allies, but I suspect that he is not actually planning on doing anything.

An alternative explanation could be that he simply wants to get his hands on a very resource rich area such as Greenland.

  • Edit: Sorry I'm dumb. I misread your comment multiple times and thought you suggested we should just implement tariffs, as opposed to counter-tarrifs (not sanctions like you said). I think I haven't had enough sleep..

  • What a windbag..

They should just put him on a boat on the North Sea, floating in front of a couple of windmills. That way we can supply Europe with all the clean reliable renewable power we need, and then some.

  • I have a YouTube channel as well, and also got notified about this.
The setting is disabled by default, so I don't have a particularly large problem with it. But that might also be because I'm in the EU.

  • I was reading an article on that on Tweakers two days ago, and I was quite confused until the last sentence saying that it was not related to the "decentralized chat protocol with a similar name"

  • While I dont think Macron made the best call there, its not entirely accurate to say the left coalition won a majority. They won 182 out of 577 seats (31.5%) which makes them the largest minority, but not a majority.

Coalitions don't necessarily include the largest minority. If the other parties for whatever reason find the differences too inreconsilable, then you cannot form a coalition.

At least that seems to be the convention in Windows. I'm not sure what the convention would be on Linux.

  • In the Dutch parliamentary system we do have a two-house structure (i.e. we have a Parliament and a Senate), while also having proportional representation.

    • There is a national election every four years that determines the make-up of the national parliament. The result directly proportionally determines the seat division (150 seats total).
    • There is also a provincial election every four years. This directly proportionally determines the seat division of the respective provincial houses.
But it also indirectly determines the make-up of the Senate. The provincial houses hold their own election and vote for the seat division of the Senate (75 seats total for 12 provinces).

It is traditionally seen that Parliament proposes, argues and passes legislation, while the Senate checks the passed legislation for constitutionality before giving it their sign of approval.
Another view is that Parliament is the direct representation of the people, while the Senate is the national representation of the provincial houses.

I think it is worth keeping in mind that an electoral system doesn't have to be exactly like the theoretically pure version. You can mix and match elements to something that would suit your situation best (for instance in terms of achievability)
