Playing MUDs on JANET (not exactly the internet but close enough). We played late at night on university computers knowing that this wasn't really what either the computers or JANET were supposed to be used for but it was still great.
A couple of lines from the The Man Who Says Words in the Wrong Order sketch.
"Sometimes at the end of a sentence I'll come out with the wrong fusebox. And the thing about saying the wrong word is a] I don't notice it, and b] sometimes orange water given bucket of plaster."
TheWrongFusebox was my reddit account for... well over a decade.
I don’t have a huge amount of respect for recruiters having been involved with them on both sides of the hiring process.
It often feels like they treat it like a numbers game - minimise effort by just throwing enough resumes at a job and hoping one will stick and then earn an easy cut. That will earn them more than seriously trying to match candidates with jobs.
I feel like he’s a kind of modern-day Delia Smith. He has recipes for almost every meal you could think of but they tend to be quite basic and often not authentic - like the time he pissed off all of Spain with his ‘take’ on paella. He’s also said and done some really dumb things.
I’ve been given a couple of his cookbooks over the years but I think my mother-in-law has them at the moment and I’m not missing them.
Weeds out a lot of people since half of Americans don’t read books at all.
Is that always a good thing? What about people who don't read much but listen to audiobooks and go to the theatre a lot?
Theoretically filters out people who love this kind of tech subculture from people who are just in it for the money
One of the best programmers I ever worked with was 'in it for the money'. He was what Goldman Sachs used to call 'long term greedy' though which meant he had an eye on the success of the project above and beyond his own responsibilities and his own code. That's why he was one of the best programmers.
