  • I spent a while practicing the ability to see / be aware of and empathize with the pain of others a while back as part of an effort to learn universal love. I endorse having done so, and I still think he's a piece of shit. It's just that, much like the dog dump on the lawn, he can't help being what he is; he's made of atoms that follow physical law. I don't think that free will is a thing, and I don't think between his genetic and environmental inheritances he ever had a real chance to be better. Doesn't mean I want him to have his tiny hands on the power that gives his cold black heart the closest thing it ever has to happiness (the feeling of not just not wanting to throw hamberders at the wall, but the feeling of wanting not to throw hamberders at the wall), just that it's sorrowful he is that way, and I wish he could get real help for the sickness inside.

  • I can't always manage it, like when I think about what he wants to do to my whole family for existing differently in a way his base has been told to be angry about, but sometimes I do manage a sense of sorrow for the fact that he's spent his entire life like that, trapped in himself.

  • So if you ever shave you're stuck with clean shave forever? What's the cutoff for "full beard"?

  • It doesn't have to apply only for one group to be racism. Redlining was a practice that was technically about areas, not people, and there could be white people within those areas, but it's still racism. If the effects of a policy land disproportionately on one group or affect one group differently, like the shaving policy AllonzeeLV mentioned, where a frequency of shaving harms one group more than another, holding the group that will be harmed to a policy that harms them is racist.

  • So, when I read this, I can't help but think that that sounds like a miserable way to live, going from hatred to grudge to hatred as a continual state of being. Really nothing his actions could cause me to want for him is worse than being him. I wish he could go and get help instead of spending his time taking it out on everyone around him, but he won't.

  • I mean, many things are possible, including that outcome, whereas FTL and time travel do not seem to be possible. The question is, how probable is that outcome, and can you do anything to steer matters to it in a realistic way? I'd have to say that anyone sane enough to actually effect that outcome is too sane to come within a kilometer of even spending the time to plan it, let alone actually try it and die on the protective detail's bullets.

  • Honestly it's kind of impressive that, as invested as they are in dragging his name through the mud, and with the aid of Russia, they still have nothing of any substance. They've convinced me Joe Biden is a more honest man than I used to believe.

  • I mean, fruit of the poisonous tree is a thing. This isn't without precedent. Not saying that he necessarily shouldn't be prosecuted, but he'd already plead to charges before people started screaming, and prosecution really should be based on evidence in hand, not people crying really hard.

  • It isn't obvious to me, and I know a lot of queer people and feminists (there's a lot of overlap, since queer people, as societal outcasts, can see matters from the outside in a way people plugged into social reality can't).

  • Sorry, can you unpack exactly what you think being trans is, please? You've gestured in a couple of directions this thread, but I'd rather have a direct explicit answer than trying to infer it and possibly be wrong.

  • Unpack this, please? What is that agenda? How are trans people and feminists being used to push it? What does skin deep "support" in the form of lip service have to do with it?

  • Tradition effectively holds no weight with me. Is the idea worthwhile? Then why does it matter what people did in the past about it? Is it bad? Then why would I do it?

  • I'm not hearing how trans people fit into this. You know the Nazis killed a lot of trans people and the book burnings included the research of the time, right?

  • It does not help that NATO loves weaponising trans people for neoliberal white power agenda.

Yeah like the other respondent I am absolutely going to request that you unpack this.

  • Alternative perspective: many "traditional" things are in fact bad. Not everything, but many things, and we should dump those things.

  • So, norms that aren't serving us should absolutely be broken. That's not to say we can't apply a little Chesterton's Fence, look around for what purpose it serves, but the old norms aren't holy for being old. If they aren't net positive, fuck 'em.

Well, I stand corrected. That reduces my sympathy for them, which already wasn't in a great place with them opting to become TERF island. I guess there's solid reasons why their GDP is on par with the lowest southern states.
