  • We were going to hire them, but they can't show proof of working in the country.

And since I recommended that they get hired and they can't show the right paperwork, it is becoming my job on how I should proceed.

Edit: Yeah, I was the one interviewing.

  • There's a difference between the three presidents.

Hoover was sadly trapped into an economic and political thinking that wasn't suited for the Great Depression. He tried to help the country, but the help was largely ineffectual or harmful. FDR's administration approached the Great Depression from a radically different point of view.

Buchanan was laughably incompetent, which was the style of the time for presidents before Lincoln. Buchanan didn't respond to active rebellion because he didn't think he could.

Trump is actively malicious. He is allowing for the gutting of civilian government under his watch while trying to shift taxation to a system he can control to bypass Congress. Not even Andrew Jackson was that brazen.

  • Trump was relatively ineffective on his first term because he didn't know how to be effective and didn't choose to ignore the courts.

Trying to put myself in the shoes of a Trump supporter who isn't an idiot, they probably thought the damage Trump could do for a second term would be as limited as it was for the first term while still keeping a governmental status quo.

  • Even before social media, there appears to be a link between increased literacy and decreased sentences. It could be that, as more became literate, the use of the written language shifted to being simpler as it found more uses.

  • I've worked with some who worked well after they had to.

They enjoyed their job, found it mentally stimulating, and enjoyed the people they worked with.

We're also seeing cases of soft retirement, where managers step down from their roles but maintain a technical position that implicitly includes teaching future generations at the company.

  • It is generally considered a power imbalance in a relationship benefitting the older person. The older person can define parts of a relationship as being normal while the younger person doesn't have the life experience to know if that is the case.

For instance, in your case, we would expect your girlfriend to still be in high school while you would either be graduating college this year or already had graduated college. In an American's point of view, that is a large gap in life experience.
