  • That page about Roger's outage is an interesting read. Interac deserves a (lesser) part of the blame, such a critical service shouldn't depend on a single network provider. Good practices include redundancy in different locations and backed by different network and electricity provider, or at least not share the same local power grid.

  • Same, I see the bible as a cultural phenomenon. Good to see these discussions moving from away Reddit toward a more independent internet platform.

It's interesting that this a generic website. It would seem more natural to move to from a subreddit to a Lemmy/ActivityPub community. Is this motivated by the issue with moderating and federation experienced on Beehaw?

  • I wonder if this would end up creating a second parallel PKI. The existing one used for HTTPS security based on Browser's own trust decisions and CA-Browser forum guidelines. The EIDas one for a "government-approved" checkmark but that doesn't make the website HTTPS nor have a secure icon.

  • I guess the slow moving conveyer belt give animals time to get out of the way before getting captured. The Sea Cleaners FAQ also says the following.

Will this boat be a nuisance for the marine fauna and flora?

Every effort is made to minimize the impact on marine fauna and flora. In particular, the boat will be equipped with an infrasound system to keep marine animals away from the boat by scattering fish and marine mammals when approaching the boat.

Waste sorting will be done manually: the few living organisms and the organic waste that will get caught in the collection mats will be immediately put back into the water, without damage.

Except in special cases, anchoring will not be necessary, so the impact on the sea grass beds and marine flora will be minimized, and the calls will be scheduled in ports equipped with infrastructures to handle the cargoes of waste brought back by the vessel.

  • I watched it a second time to be sure. While the voiceover doesn't say "Holy War" he does cite religion and sounds like religious radicals dog-whistle.

There's good reasons to be critical of Netanyahu government, but I'd still suggest seeking better sources.

  • Mods appears to be flexible with rule and take gentler approach when it's not abuse. That's a good approach.

The line can be blurry between US News that's relevant at the local/national level and fit better within c/usnews, and relevant globally and may fit better in c/worldnews readers. Here I'd argue it's the former.

  • Reuters reports the women shouted 'You're all going to die' in a metro station and was threatening, quoting the prosecutor.

The investigation and video recording will be important to verify this.

If the reporting is accurate, police shot an unarmed women believing she was going to blow herself up. It might be an attempt at suicide by cop.

If it's inaccurate it might be a tragic police blunder.

  • Let's have plastic producers demonstrate their product can be recycled cheaply at scale before selling it. And the logical next step is require all plastic sold to be at least 50% recycled to ensure recycling is commercially viable and actually done at scale.

We shouldn't be producing mountains of plastic waste then let society struggle for 40 years to find a way to recycle all of it (burning isn't recycling). It should be the other way around, producers should demonstrate recycling first and use recycled plastic in their production.

  • GPS can be helpful during commute to avoid trafic and accidents. Also it can help find faster route that aren't necessarily obvious even if you've been to the place 20 times.
