  • That's a defeatist attitude. Challenging this up to the supreme court would draw even more attention to the case, which Thomas may not want. Even if he did, there's no telling what the court would decide. To my knowledge he hasn't been charged yet, that would be a good first step.

  • I don't know. Tax authorities can be relentless when someone get caught committing shameless tax fraud.

There might not be enforceable penalty for ethics violation at the supreme court. But there definitely are penalties for tax fraud. Obligatory Al Capone reference.

  • Everyone assumed as much. But there is now confirmation that the next election won't be free. It's important to be able to point to specific actions and behavior when saying Russia isn't a free country.

  • This reminds me of Glootie.

Glootie is a character that first appeared in Introducing: Glootie! [..] He has DO NOT DEVELOP MY APP tattooed on his forehead.

Someone like Glootie once once asked me to develop his app. I expertly dodged the bullet by referring him to an organization that coordinates freelance developments. Someone explained to him that he'd need 1 or 2 developers plus a project manager, and probably told him typically hourly rate and number of hours for such projects. Never heard him again speak about the app.

  • The commission said 29 people have so far filed to run for the presidency. But after today's decision, Mr Putin remains the only candidate to be able to register as a candidate.

Not just this anti-war candidate. It appears all candidates are banned from challenging Putin.

  • I hate HP's so called smart apps.

HP's website wouldn't let me download a driver, but insisted on using their app to detect the printer model (which I already know) and then try to open the corresponding download page for that model (which I already vsited).

Off course the app open the wrong URL and lead to a 404 error. I had to download drivers from another source.

  • The bill has since been reworked to specify that it only applies to holy books from religions recognised in Denmark.

I guess it's now more clearly defined to reference to religion recognized by Danish administrations.

  • It seems this tweets refers to the CFA currency, which is inherited from colonial times and is indeed bad for nations' monetary inependance.

That being said the tweet exagerates CFA reserves that were (until recently) controlled by France. It was 50% of foreign exchange reserve, not 90% of all nations' reserves. And it's out of date since France started to transfer reserves to the West Africa Central Bank two years ago.

There's also a plan to do away with CFA altogether, and replace it by another currently called Eco.

Plans for Eco are criticized because it's seen as replacing a France-linked currency by a European-linked one.

It's clear this hasn't been completely solved, but the situation has improved and should keep improving. All eyes are on this new Eco currency, we'll see if that happens and it it does, whether it's fair for all nations involved.

  • Bolloré's private company is exploiting African countries, that much is obvious.

It's more complicated when it comes to recent military operations that included french troops. The original Serval military operation in Mali was requested by Mali's government at the time, and was a joint Africa-lead operation that involved multiple African and European countries.

Operation Serval followed the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2085 of 20 December 2012 and an official request by the Malian interim government for French military assistance.

Both African and French soldiers died while fighting terrorist groups threatening Mali during these operations.

France's government certainly has some afterthought when they decided to interviene, the most obvious is the desire to have influence in the region. But it's not comparable to colonial times as the headline imply.
