  • I mean... Which countries are you aiming these hypothetical nukes at to begin with? Just Afghanistan, or anywhere where Al Queda has supporters?

I don't really know where to try and unpick this one but responding to an act of terrorism (as opposed to an act of war) by immediately launching a nuclear strike just for revenge is madness. It would be a crime that would dwarf 9/11 itself thousands of times over.

And it was probably what Bin Laden was hoping for thinking about it.

  • Kids who got hooked on smoking use vapes to quit.

I'm not so sure about this. I don't have any sources but anecdotally it seems like a lot of kids have leaped into vaping without having ever smoked and have got nicotine habits. It began whenever Juul started marketing themselves as wanting to be the 'ipod of vaping' long ago and specifically targeted young people in the advertising despite what they might have said

Before then it wasn't a thing - it was adults who had found a way to stop smoking and were being left to do it in peace. I'll be proper annoyed if all this leads to me not being able to vape anymore because nothing else worked stopping me smoking. It's the lesser of two evils by a very long shot.

Imo you should have responsible licensed vape shops that sell these things, and I'd be fine with plain packaging - most of the stuff I get is pretty much in plain packaging already from vpz.

But if they ban disposables there's going to be an opening for a black market for dodgy stuff full of even more rubbish. Frankly, they should have done something about this a long time ago

  • The only thing I go on Reddit for now at the moment is to browse their comic sub once every now and then.

But that's not completely dropping Reddit. Because Lemmy/Kbin is still in its early stages there'll be a lot of people who spend most of their time here but occasionally go to Reddit for that one sub or for some particular thing that's not quite made it here yet.

  • I do hope this works to stop kids developing/continuing nic habits. Environmental reasons as well of course but really ever since juul came out teen vaping has been ignored instead of dealt with.

However, I can't help but think of the days at my school of us smoking and hope kids won't just take that up instead - luckily it costs a bomb these days so they probably can't afford it (no idea what disposables cost but guessing not as expensive as proper cigarettes!)

  • Yeah I actually did some research and I stand corrected!

I don't know how far they would have been able to pull the joke of 'satire of lazy sitcoms by using incredibly poor taste' for a full 8 eps but I wouldn't hold your breath for an official release.

They backed out of giving Hardwicke House a full release in DVD (the episode with Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson) at the last minute and that was entirely non controversial.

  • I'm a long time vaper, it's got me off the cigs, and I use a reusable tank because it's what I've always used but it's obviously better for the environment and cheaper.

I do support clamping down on disposables because of the waste and these ones seem to be the ones that get into the hands of kids.

However, the whole scare thing about ecigs has always looked like a massive diversion tactic when actual cigarettes are still on sale. I mean it won't happen because it's kerching for the government. But I see literally thousands more discarded cigarette butts than I do vapes round our way.

  • I use Surfshark but I expect most of the quality ones offer something similar. Nord and Express often get mentioned as the best VPNs but Surfshark as the best cheap VPN - I'm impressed with it, would recommend. You can even use Chrome on Android and most sites seem like normal, though I've switched to Firefox anyway

(If you are thinking of using a VPN just don't use a free one because they're probably dodgy)

  • When I was a kid we used to have audiobooks in the car on long car journeys and that was brilliant.

But at some point I lost that part of my brain which can retain information like that because even if I know I'm finding the story interesting, these days I'm more likely to find my mind wandering and thinking about what to cook, other things that need doing and I just can't get it. I think maybe because I'm quite a fast reader it's a bit of a slower pace and my brain is waiting for them to hurry up.

What I do like though on audible is there's lots of dramas and comedies, usually from BBC but not always. So on commutes I'll listen to that sort of thing and it keeps me engaged.

But different things work for different people. I am definitely someone who takes in written information better whether it's reading for pleasure or work stuff

  • I use a VPN which has an excellent ad & bs blocker. But occasionally some sites need me to turn it off to pay for things or whatever and I forget to turn it back on and end up browsing the internet in its normal state.

And wow... welcome to commerce central. It's not that all the ads are obnoxious though some are, but the quantity of them is out of control on some websites.

To be fair, I've found it's a good rule of thumb that the quality of a website is usually proportionate to the less amount of ads they have.

I also reviewed mobile games for a while and had to play without a VPN to get the same experience most players would get - game ads are the worst. Unrepresentative of the games they're trying to sell, but also often sexist (veering towards misogynistic), obnoxious and with false endings.

  • I'm actually surprised he's not crossed that bridge. I do find it interesting to have a billionaire that doesn't even bother to pay lip service to being a civil human being but is just a massive racist tool.

But you know what if he met these people irl he'd get along fine with them I bet and there wouldn't be these unhinged outbursts. He's a complete paper tiger suffering a case of being terminally online because he thinks it's his job (it isn't).

Maybe he's taking something either prescribed or recreationally that has him perpetually on a knife edge like this.

  • I think the main difference between election mode Blair and election mode Starmer was that Blair looked passionate and enthusiastic about wanting to introduce policies to improve things for people, and that was infectious.

Like I've said, I just get the impression with Starmer he kind of says 'oh yeah... we're not doing that either now', and he might have a good reason. It comes over like he's taking ideas away from the table.

It's easy for me to say I know. I don't know the decisions he has to make. I just worry those floating voters will think Starmer and Sunak are very similar and not care who gets in because 'they're all the same'

  • Obviously not. But most of the floating voters labour is trying to attract aren't radicals they just know they want something better.

I, personally, do not think that after dropping the tax on the top 5% on earners (the main frightened the horses policy) it was also necessary to drop the workers rights and ending 2 child limit on benefits.

They've also give cold on green policies by the sounds of it. I mean at some point you've got to differentiate yourself

  • Sure I get that. And I want them in power. But I'm slightly concerned they're going to be so boring as to not be effective - ie be so concerned to not rock the boat they'll enable the status quo to more or less continue

I've been concerned to see the amount of policies they've rowed back on recently. I totally understand they don't want to scare the horses but at the same time it's not like Starmer is Corbyn is it?

  • Someone else mentioned Procession to Calvary - an adventure game set in a cut and paste world of renaissance art with a very surreal plot and sense of humour. Pythonesque.

There Is No Game is pretty hilarious, the voice acting always makes me crack up.

Agatha Knife is a funny point and click adventure game where you're a 7 year old girl who's a butcher and needs to set up her own religion sacrificing pigs in the basement for... Reasons.

  • Yeah I'm a man but I have a wife and quite a few friends with medium to large chest extensions and I do not envy them - the inconvenience looks like a right pain in the hole. I find running for a bus bad enough in the morning without having to worry about things getting out of control up there. Unless you're planning on being stationary a lot (basically not doing day to day activities) you're going to need support for those things.

My wife keeps trying to arrange a free bra fitting at M&S but it seems like that's a high demand service...
