  • I'm on Kbin as well. I just don't overthink it too much, but the idea is that you can interact with all the different places whether it be Lemmy or otherwise. Either way, you can comment and interact and post everywhere so if it works it's good. And so far it seems to.

I think beehaw is defederated from Lemmy but I don't know if that means it's defederated from Kbin. I can see their things fine.

  • It depends, but I find it's at it's worst when the kiss is the 'reward' for the hero/heroine for being so heroic. Or just generally when it's used as a lazy piece of short hand storytelling to show 'yeah these guys love each other or something, whatever'.

On the other hand it can be genuinely cathartic or romantic.

  • I'm a Kbin convert I must say - it's as versatile as you like and considering it's very much under construction it's really impressive how much you can do with it.

I lurked on several different fediverse options before though and none of them were bad but Kbin just clicked for me

  • 12 hours, 24 hours something like that?

Then he'll say in public something like 'this is utter and absolute poppy piffle' and in private he'll say sorry and think up what his next line of sorry not sorry bs is going to be. It's what he's always done.

  • As someone who works for the NHS this should come as no surprise.

Ever since the pathetic pay rise offered to nurses after all their work during the pandemic there has been nothing but contempt shown towards people who actually work at the coal face of the health system, and by extension the patients who have to use the system which is stretched to breaking point.

As a society we should be asking ourselves why it's acceptable for public sector workers such as nurses, Doctors, teachers, firefighters etc to be expected to work longer hours (often outside of their contracted hours) for less money than in the private sector.

  • Well, they're supposed to help you quit smoking cigarettes so you're not inhaling all the tar and other stuff that usually lead to lung cancer. They're not primarily designed to get rid of your nicotine addiction. So it depends on your definition.

It's undoubtedly healthier to do neither

  • I switched to vaping because I'd just met my now wife and she hated the smell of smoke and all the associated stuff that goes with it, partly because she'd just come out of a bad relationship with a chain smoker but also because it's just not nice for non smokers anyway.

That was about 10 years ago and I still vape. I'm will aware that I've just swapped one addiction for another but I don't consider myself a smoker - haven't touched a cigarette since, and genuinely never wanted to for a very long time now. My lungs still feel a lot better, I can run and do excercise without feeling like my lungs are imploding.

A lot of the studies done on vaping it should be noted use old fashioned kit and unrealistic use case scenarios (such testing until a coil gives out - a coil would usually last someone at least a week) -but even taking that into account I'll take my chances with vaping. I tried all the other methods of giving up smoking and none of them worked for me so this is the closest.

As I side note, I am against disposable vapes and think the law should crack down on sales to underage people. A solution would be to only sell in established vape shops and require ID with every sale. I'm not naturally hard-line about this sort of thing but the school vaping thing is well out of control and is need of sorting out

  • So far the police have said that nothing illegal has taken place. But I think he'll probably be too unwell and his reputation will be too harmed to do any work for some time

Plus like you say if there is anything else that hasn't come to light yet that might change things

  • The Storm Is Upon Us - an explanation and history of what the whole QAnon hoax actually is/was including how it affected so many families when their relatives became obsessed with the conspiracy. Been meaning to read it for a while.

  • I've always felt like the first 2 are essential reading, the third is pretty good and the fourth and fifth divide people.

I'd recommend the Dirk Gently books as well, the first one especially!

  • I was doing contract work for Barts when this exact same thing happened to them 5 years or so ago with wannacry. If I was in their Information Governance team I'd be demanding a massive investigation into why patient data has been compromised in the exact same way yet again.

  • Exactly - there are many shades of grey here. Since I've been on Kbin I've rarely checked Reddit at all, but I've been on it once or twice to check a few of the health support communities I'm in which is something Reddit really does have the lead on at the moment until more people come over here

  • I felt like the first line up of Public Image Limited that split up after Metal Box could have done at least one more great album with Wobble's bass and Levene's guitar - instead it all fell apart after that and became the John Lydon show.

The Manic Street Preachers had just hit their stride with The Holy Bible album when Richey Edwards disappeared. It was devastating all round when he went. They did great stuff after but I always wondered what direction they would have gone in if he had still been with them because his lyrics were the ones I found most interesting

  • Political memes, cartoons, satire in general is funny if it's funny imo - generally as long as it's punching up, original and clever.

Everything in politics is fair game for criticism whether it's on 'my side' or not. But it's better if it's funny.

What I don't like (read - actively hate) is the repetitive cut and paste Wojak/Chad memes that tend to be used by both sides to attack anyone from trans people to Christians. They're using the mask of 'making a joke about issues' to have a go at people. Luckily since I left Reddit for here I've not seen one. They're everywhere over there.

  • Yep in the UK everyone from teens to your Nan use WhatsApp whatever smartphone they've got.

My Dad is the only outlier who sends texts, I think he does it on purpose to be 'different' though. Everyone misses his messages until he sends them again on WhatsApp.
