  • Of course, that's why I said follow your conscience. Social media particularly Lemmy is a terrible place to ask questions like this though. You may as well as if it's okay to become a cop LOL. The truth is the world does need landlords and cops. When they get demonized good people are less likely to become them and narcissists will take their place.

I was a landlord and had no problem saying so here. No matter what I said, people cut me down. My renters called me the best landlord, one called me the coolest landlord. Their opinions are the ones I care about. I charged $300 less than the house next door. None of this mattered to folks on Lemmy. I don't take it personal. People talk differently anonymously online than they do in person. That's their shortcoming not mine.

Good luck with whatever decision you make. I hope you have someone to mentor you in real life. I had several plus friends who are carpenters, plumbers, electricians and HVAC techs. They were invaluable

  • That's a catchy tune for sure but it's odd to hear someone being nostalgic about it. It wasn't unusual for someone to say "sorry but all I have is am jams" if they gave you a lift and their radio didn't have FM (AM being pronounced phonetically so it rhymes with jams). AM radio was more known for oldies, pre 60's music. Also the signal faded when you drove under a bridge. For reference I graduated in '84

  • To say "insurance company bad" oversimplifies the problem. That's why it's foolish to base opinions on memes. Where there's lots of money, greedy people will find a way to get at it or as I like to say "shit attracts flies". In my work I deal with private companies that are paid with public dollars. What I see going on has jaded me hardcore. Publicly funding the health care system will be a disaster without overhauling the whole system.

  • No it doesn't but I can understand why they don't greenlight everything. This all is a glaring example why we need single payer health care and doctors that earn a flat rate and not get paid per procedure (there is a name for this, i don't know it).

  • A few. I had a primary care doctor who would talk my ear off. After we discussed whatever my problem was he would talk about religion and politics. He was pretty right wing, me having a catholic school education and have long paid attention to politics can hold my own. The odd thing, there was always a waiting room full of patients but he would gab on and on. Eventually I came in for an appointment and I said to his receptionist "the doctor sure doesn't rush me out of there". That's when she said "yeah most insurance companies want you out in fifteen minutes". At that moment it clicked. The doctor was always looking at his watch, if he went over fifteen minutes he could charge for another fifteen minutes. He also had a waiting room full of posters and pamphlets paid for by pharmaceutical companies. He suggested prescribing me medication for my anxiety, i just laughed. My doctor now has none of that propaganda in his waiting room. My last visit he pushed eating fresh fruit and vegetables. I told him that's why I come to him, he tells me what I don't want to hear. I had a dentist who was the same way. Also very religious and right wing.

  • They are the citation. They are the one reporting it as fact. I'm not saying to believe everything you read but they are the ones putting their reputation on the line. Opinion commentators can say whatever they want because it's their opinion. Big difference.

  • When reading hard news from an outlet that actually hires journalists I consider that to be the source.

When reading opinion I definitely do a bit more digging, keeping an eye out for half truths. I wouldn't consider this to be journalism

  • Back in the day our AM stations had local programming. Mostly call in talk shows that covered issues both local and far. The hosts would describe themselves as conservative but they were way more tame than the shit today. Then Rush Limbaugh went national.

  • The ultralight stuff is a whole new set of gear I've considered buying but don't know if I'll use it enough to be worth it. My old school ass carries about 50lbs on a weekend trip though it drops fast as I eat up the food and drink the beer. I managed this for decades while my body weight was about 130lbs. Now I'm at 170 with plantar fasciitis, mild arthritis and possibly Covid lingering effects.

  • When I was younger I swore I'd never change and stay true to myself. Easy enough but everything and everyone around me changed and I found myself shaking my fist at the clouds saying how everything was better when I was young. Then I realized I had turned into my old man.
