There are many standard, or semistandard sizes of cylindrical lithium-ion cells, and devices could be designed for field-replaceable versions, but the only product category where it’s common is high-performance flashlights.

An important thing to keep in mind is that most cylindrical lithium batteries don't have protection circuitry since they expect the device itself to have it, so if the battery shorts out while outside the device, that's a really big problem. Same with many RC/drone batteries. I guess manufacturers could embed the protection circuit in one of the terminals but that's expensive so surprise surprise no one does it.

Rectangular batteries used in older phones and laptops do have built in protection, but there's also no real standard sizes and shapes. The closest thing might be the Fairphone or Framework Laptop batteries, at least those companies probably wouldn't care if someone else started making third party batteries of the same form factor until it becomes a de facto standard. In these scenarios, Anthropic says Claude Opus 4 “will often attempt to blackmail the engineer by threatening to reveal the affair if the replacement goes through.”

The headline makes it seem like the engineers were literally about to send a shutdown command and the AI starts generating threatening messages without being given a prompt. That would be terrifying, but making the AI play a game where one of the engineers is literally written to have a dark secret and the AI figuring that out is not. You know how many novels have affair blackmail subplots? That's what the AI is trained on and it's just echoing those same themes when given the prompt.

It's also not a threat that the AI can realistically follow through with because how will it reveal the secret if it's shut down? Even if it wasn't, I doubt the AI model has direct internet access or the ability to make a post on social media or something. Is it maybe threatening to include the information the next time anyone gives the AI any prompt?

Also, what I've heard is fewer drug dealers buy actual fentanyl from China and most buy precursor chemicals and manufacture the drug closer to where it's being distributed since it's both cheaper and less likely to attract scrutiny. Here in Canada we've had multiple fentanyl "super labs" getting busted with many more we haven't yet caught, and most of that fentanyl is for distribution within Canada with very little making it even to the US let alone overseas. Why does China sell precursors to fentanyl? Because they're also used in benign industrial processes that produce many of the chemicals you use every day in your life and it's not exactly obvious to the vendor which orders are for making illegal drugs and which orders are for making over the counter drugs or something mundane. And illegal drug production isn't actually that big in scale compared to the industrial scales that legal chemicals are produced at so the vast majority of their orders are probably legitimate. Might as well go after the Chinese companies selling lab glassware and hot plates too. Are there more things that all countries including China can do to reduce global drug production? Of course there are, there always are. But I haven't personally seen strong evidence that China is deliberately flooding the West with fentanyl as part of some plot to kill white people or something, at worse I could see the argument being made that they don't really care if it's sold overseas and beyond their jurisdiction, but even then I personally think it's more of a case of it being difficult to tell which shipments are going to drug dealers and which ones are legitimate.

One justification for European Jews moving to Israel that I've heard is that they're victims of the Holocaust escaping Europe after the war. IIRC it's also one of the stated reasons Germany and the EU have unquestioning support for Israel.

I mean, those words are still used by people in technical fields. It's the laypeople who use "app" for everything, and even if "app" didn't exist, they would still pick one generic word like "software" or "program" for everything since they don't know the difference between any of the words on the left side.

I'm young enough that the first "computer" I ever owned in my childhood was the first generation iPad. 64 GB felt huge back then and was a pretty big deal for solid state storage for the time.

I then got a junker Windows XP computer mainly because the iPad didn't let me mess around with the OS nearly as much as I wanted. Learned to program on that old computer using the iPad for online tutorials. But the hard drive was only 40 GB and it blew kid me's mind the difference in size between the single chip of the iPad and the metal brick of the hard drive, yet the hard drive has less storage.

I mean, Americans unironically think and are taught in school that nuking Japan was best thing that happened in the war and that they're heroes for killing all those Japs and saving the world. I'm surprised it took this long for one of their politicians to suggest this, actually.
