You canât put toothpaste back in the tube. The only question going forward is how AI will be developed and who will control it.
Fair enough, but even if the model is open source, you still have no control or knowledge of how it was developed or what biases it might have baked in. AI is by definition a black box, even to the people who made it, it can't even be decompiled like a normal program.
Itâs funny that youâd bring up the drug analogy because youâre advocating a war on drugs here.
I mean, China has the death penalty for drug distribution, which is supported by the majority of Chinese citizens. They do seem more tolerant of drug users compared to the US (I've never done drugs in China nor the US so I wouldn't know), so clearly the decision to have zero tolerance for distributors is a very intentional action by the Communist party. As far as I know, no socialist country has ever been tolerant to even the distribution of cannabis, let alone hard drugs, and they have made it pretty clear that they never will.
Personally, I have absolutely no problem with that if the model is itself open and publicly owned. Iâm a communist, I donât support copyrights and IP laws in principle. The ethical objection to AI training on copyrighted material holds superficial validity, but only within capitalismâs warped logic. Intellectual property laws exist to concentrate ownership and profit in the hands of corporations, not to protect individual artists.
I never thought of it in terms of copyright infringement, but in terms of reaping the labour of proletarians while giving them nothing in return. I'm admittedly far less experienced of a communist than you, but I see AI as the ultimate means of removing workers from their means of production because it's scraping all of humanity's intellectual labour without consent, to create a product that is inferior to humans in every way except for how much you have to pay it, and it's only getting the hype it's getting because the bourgeoisie see it as a replacement for the very humans it exploited.
For the record, I give absolutely no shits about pirating movies or "stealing" content from any of the big companies, but I personally hold the hobby work of a single person in higher regard. It's especially unfair to the smallest content creators because they are most likely making literally nothing from their work since the vast majority of personal projects are uploaded for free on the public internet. It's therefore unjust (at least to me) to appropriate their free work into something whose literal purpose is to get companies out of paying people for content. Imagine working your whole life on open source projects only for no company to want to hire you because they're using AI trained on your open source work to do what they would have paid you to do. Imagine writing novels your whole life and putting them online for free, only for no publisher to want to pay for your work because they have a million AI monkeys trained on your writing typing out random slop and essentially brute forcing a best seller. Open source models won't prevent this from happening, in fact it will only make it easier.
AI sounds great in an already communist society, but in a capitalist one, it seems to me like it would be deadly to the working class, because capitalists have made it clear that they intend to use it to eliminate human workers.
Again, I don't know nearly as much about communism as you so most of this is probably wrong, but I am expressing my opinions as is because I want you to examine them and call me out where I'm wrong.
I mean, that's a pretty believable claim. Most open source developers don't even think their project will be noticed by a lot of people, let alone be used for military purposes. At worst you can accuse him of being ignorant of the realities of how his software will be used but I honestly don't think he was outright lying and secretly wanted his software to be used in weapons or something.
"Don't compete with us in this supposed free market"
Silence? Lucky, my lamp has coil whine from the LED driver.
I'm not even vegan lol, strongly considering it though and you're helping :)
Since taxa is the same for you no matter the level, hey, why do you eat your brothers fungi, herbs and tree babies? Are you some kind of a cannibal?
Do you not know what cannibal means? It's not a general purpose insult for people with dietary choices you don't like, it actually has a definition and it's not an animal eating plants and fungi. If you're going to resort to name calling, at least make the effort to come up with a clever zinger or something.
But if you care about plant lives so much, you should in fact be vegan. Feeding animals to kill and eat requires 10x more plants than just eating the plants yourself. It would also dramatically reduce the amount of farmland required to support humanity, meaning literally more space on the planet for more natural forests and grasslands that contribute to the ecosystem.
Finally, you thought I was talking about chimps or something and not humans? You don't think prehistoric humans when they first became their own species, before the idea of a society or even a tribe developed, lived in social structures similar to the other very closely related ape species that we literally split off from? Even something like a hunter gatherer tribe is still a fairly complex society that needed time to develop. What were we doing before that? We were all chilling in the savannah with absolutely no conflicts between members of our species? Even within complex societies, fighting and killing your way to the top was the norm for the vast majority of human history.
This is why Israel plays the antisemitism card.
"Am I being evil by exterminating an entire ethnic group? No, literally the vast majority of the population of Earth is antisemitic which is why I must exterminate said ethnic group."
It's genius really, the more people there are against what they're doing, the more justified they think they are in doing it.
It's also why countries like Germany, the US, Canada, etc are parroting that narrative. It's a convenient way to bypass free speech laws to censor the majority opinion while still pretending the West is special because it supposedly has free speech. If there were only a minority that are against Israel in those countries, they wouldn't care enough to spend nearly as much resources suppressing it as they have.

Born in China but immigrated to Canada as a kid. Most of my thoughts are in English since that's the language I'm most comfortable with, but I always count in Mandarin. I learned to count in China and have always just instinctively done it in the language I learned it in. I can count in English, but I definitely find that there's more mental overhead. Also English numbers have more syllables which even when thinking them in my mind slows me down.
0/10, none of the window frames are melting into each other. Literally uninhabitable.
Literally any lifestyle can become a cult. The presence of vegan cults is because veganism is more popular than ever so evil people exploit that to form cults. There are fitness cults too, does that mean everyone who works out is a cult member?
Eating meat is natural and occurs whether you and I exist or not.
So is killing the top ape in your troop so you get his harem. So is eating the babies of the former troop leader so you free up the female apes to care for your offspring instead of his. Nature is a hellhole and more importantly, isn't a deity or even a conscious being. It has no morals, nor a will, nor any opinions on how living things should act.
If you're going to enjoy the comfort of modern technology, especially modern food production technology, the "nature" argument is not applicable because none of the food you eat is remotely natural. You're welcome to sharpen a stick with your teeth and use your real human hunting skills to get your meat, i.e. chasing down wild animals until they die from exhaustion. Better hope that wild bull with razor sharp horns that weighs three times more than you doesn't figure out that they can just turn around and attack you head on, because hunting large animals is lethal to the hunter almost as often as it's lethal for prey. You also better not use any antibiotics if your hunt leaves you wounded, because animals getting slowly and horrifically killed by bacterial infection is natural and occurs whether you and I exist or not. Microbes are your only real predator so you better respect that.

I don't trust any of those SSDs not to have backdoors, it's not even a hypothetical, we know that hardware encryption on SSDs have been broken in the past. In fact, I wouldn't even be surprised if the manufacturer is just storing all the keys they bake into the SSDs, why wouldn't they from a business perspective? At least with software encryption you can audit the code and the keys are actually generated randomly on a computer you own.
Also, if your SSD hardware fails, it could become impossible to decrypt any recovered data because the encryption keys are likely stored in the processor with no way of getting them out (and no manufacturer who is secretly storing the keys is going to blow their cover by helping you recover your data). With software encryption, you can back up your encryption keys and will be able to actually decrypt the raw data you read from the drive.
Seems like the website itself is not hosted in Russia but it has Russian embeds. So it would be trivial to block them if you cared, whether with your adblock, firewall or PiHole (you can even set it up to block *.ru domains if you want).
Like others have mentioned, I don't think this is any worse than the usual Google Analytics and Facebook/Twitter share embeds. In fact if you live in the US (or just the West in general), those companies can probably do way more to fuck your life up than Russian companies.

Running the AI is not where the power demand comes from, it's training the AI. Which, if you trained it only once it wouldn't be so bad, but obviously every AI vendor will be training all the time to ensure their model stays competitive. That's when you get into the tragedy of the commons situation where the collective power consumption goes out of control for tiny improvements in the AI model.
Meanwhile, corps clearly donât care about IP here and will keep developing this tech regardless of how ethical it is.
"It will happen anyway" is not an excuse to not try to stop it. That's like saying drug dealers will sell drugs regardless of how ethical it is so there's no point in trying to criminalize drug distribution.
Seems to me that itâs better if there are open model available and developed by the community than there only being closed models developed by corps who decide how they work and who can use them.
Except there are no truly open AI models because they all use stolen training data. Even the "open source" models like Mistral and DeepSeek say nothing about where they get their data from. The only way for there to be an open source AI model is if there was a reputable pool of training data where all the original authors consented to their work being used to train AI.
Even if the model itself is open source and free to run, if there are no restrictions against using the generated data commercially, it's still complicit in the theft of human-made works.
A lot of people will probably disagree with me but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with using AI generated content as long as it's not for commercial purposes. But if it is, you're by definition making money off content that you didn't create which to me is what makes it unethical. You could have hired that hypothetical person whose work was used in the AI, but instead you used their work to generate value for yourself while giving them nothing in return.
The issue with AI is not that it's not an impressive technology, it's that it's built on stolen data and is incredibly wasteful of resources. It's a lot like cars in that regard, sure it solves some problems and is more convenient than the alternatives, but its harmful externalities vastly outweigh the benefits.
LLMs are amazing because they steal the amazing work of humans. Encyclopedias, scientific papers, open source projects, fiction, news, etc. Every time the LLM gets something right, it's because a human figured it out, their work was published, and some company scraped it without permission. Yet it's the LLM that gets the credit and not the person. Their very existence is unjust because they profit off humanity's collective labour and give nothing in return.
No matter how good the technology is, if it's made through unethical means, it doesn't deserve to exist. You're not entitled to AI more than content creators are entitled to their intellectual property.
The stolen training data issue alone is enough to make the use of AI in business settings unethical. And until there's an LLM that is trained on 100% authorized data, selling a product developed with AI is outrught theft.
Of course there's also the energy use issue. Yeah, congrats, you used as much energy as a plane ride to generate something you could have written with your own brain with a fraction of the energy.
Facebook becoming a weapons company literally sounds like an American Dad episode.
I fucking hate this timeline.
Some examples in no particular order:
- Cowbirds lay eggs in other birds' nests, and if the other bird kicks their eggs out, the cowbird will come back and destroy the nest.
- You've probably heard of female black widows eating the male after mating, but did you know that this is so common among spiders that the males of some species are literally hardwired to automatically die during or after mating? Makes the whole process easier and prevents the male from getting away.
- Toxoplasmosis mind controls mice and makes them seek out cats so they get eaten and the parasite can move on to the cat.
- The hyena birth canal. If you think human childbirth is excruciating... you'd be right actually, we're pretty high up there on the list of animals with the worst birthing experiences, but hyenas have it even worse.
- There's a parasite that goes into a fish's mouth, eats its tongue, and attaches itself to where the tongue used to be and essentially becomes the fish's tongue.
- Hamsters eat some of their own offspring if they have too many to ensure they have enough resources to properly care for the rest.
- Baby sharks try to kill and eat each other in the mother's uterus.
IIRC all US government projects HAVE to be CC0 if released to the public. I think the idea is it was created with public money so there shouldn't be any restrictions on how the public can use it.
