  • Synology with Emby (do not use the connect service they offer) running behind my fortinet firewall. DDNS with my own domain name and ssl cert. Open 1 custom port (not 443) for it, and that's it. Geoblock every country but my own, which basically eliminated all random traffic that was hitting hit. I've been running it this way for 5 years now and have no issues to report.

  • This brings back a memory... this is like 20 years ago and our early 20's, we had one friend who went through a weird phase of self harm, but only around people and it got worse the drunker we got through the night. We all had no idea why, and we all got weirded out by it. Anyway, this reminded me of the time he carried around a glass jar with barbed wire inside and other things to cut you with $5 at the bottom. I believe he copied a scene in family guy. He kept asking people to try, and of course nobody would, so he would then say look its not hard and jam his hand inside. It was super creepy, and we think he enjoyed seeing us squirm and squint our eyes. During this same phase one night he carried around a kitchen knife, and he actually ended up stabbing our friend in the leg as he looked at us in horror and us back at him the same. Let's just say he isn't really friends with most of us anymore and also moved thousands of miles away.

  • As everyone has pointed out, people and content. Its good in some ways since not every post is drowned out with one thousand replies nobody will ever see, but at the same time, you're not getting much of anything at all sometimes. Not even very niche ones either. Even groups that represent entire states has limited info or replies still. If it can grow to that size and see some more unique and local content more I think even that would be a much better place for it to be.

  • Yeah, it's the one I was leaning towards. I liked what I saw, but I want to try it out first before diving in. I like that it offers up the newest updates first. I just had issues with getting it spun up as a vm and all I get is a black screen after it installs. I don't seem to be the only one with that issue so I'll have to think of another way to test.

  • I was already looking around. I work in IT, so I am not completely oblivious to using Linux or how it works. I tested a few out a long time ago, and we have a few systems in production at work. I was going to try out Mint, Elementary, Pop, and KDE Neon before deciding. So far I got Mint spun up as a VM and played around a little. KDE Neon just gave me a black screen after it installed, which stinks because it was the one I was leaning towards the most. I haven't gotten to the other 2 yet.

  • Yup, I finally may be trying out some Linux versions soon to find one to switch to... I have always been whatever about what Microsoft does, and it's always been simple enough to fight back and stop whatever crap I never wanted. This announcement just feels like there's no way it will stop, and it's becoming way more frequent. I hate AI, and im tired of it being shoved in my face or running my services.

I find it funny to see all the stuff they try to add or do and really wonder if they came out with windows 12 in 2 flavors, 1 being a continuation of what it is now, and 2nd being a completely stripped down version that offers nothing but the OS with nothing else in the background running or spying and no apps built in which one would sell more. The funny thing is they would probably charge you way more for the stripped-down version, and it would still probably sell more.

  • As someone who lives in the region, the ads are intense... the news loves to point out that these polls don't represent the majority, and every other poll still shows Cuomo up. I don't live there, but I still would love to see Mamdani beat that creep. We have given the same people the chance to do something different, and it almost always ends up not going anywhere or they were just bad all around.

  • I think about this sometimes in the way that if I wanted to start a new career or do something different and I quickly realize im to old to do most things these days... all regular sports have been long gone. Other jobs requiring physical requirements are either over or near the end. I remember seeing the air traffic controller shortage, and they showed the requirements and I laughed and said we'll I couldn't even attempt this if I wanted to since they don't accept people over 31. Lots of options are just gone at this point, and it's sad and scary.

  • To this day, Maxtor was the only drive that took a complete dump on me... because of that, I have always had bias towards that brand. This is over 30 years of using computers and as someone who worked tech support for a company of 5 thousand people. This failure happened at my job, and that person was not very happy.

  • That's exactly why i originally used it, actually. Our group policy is set to go to screen saver and turn off screen after lile 10 min then 20 min. Whenever I played music and stepped away, it would always turn off, so this fixed it. I understood the policy at work in case you stepped away, but I am at home now, so who cares if I leave it unlocked.

  • Thanks! I heard of that as well, but i am pretty sure that activity is recorded, and if they look at Teams activity, it would definitely be odd to see someone being in a meeting all day. I've been using this app for 2 years now, and it doesn't install on the system. Part of my responsibility is application management, so if anyone's looking over apps, it's me anyway!
